Classic, I was laughing about Bear saying he would show us all the gaping wound. Not at his accident, silly!
Bear, you have wonderful legs. Better looking than mine! Your pins are pretty cool.
Linda, you're being awfully nice today. Did you bump your head too? Just to make sure...

thanks, irked.
I don't sit at a PC to post....I can do it from any comfortable place in my house. My bed...a recliner...in the kitchen...the sofa...etc.
So...don't worry...it's elavated and THROBBING AWAY.
-------
Thanks for going to all that trouble, Bear....I appreciate seeing your leg.
None of them bothered me at all and you KNOW I love ya man....but your leg looks worse AFTER they did the surgery than it did before the open wound healed. Why is it so much bigger now? Did they add some muscle too?
I can now completely understand why you can't do certain things....like put a boot on anymore. Still looks so sore. Is it, all the time?
Another neighbor down my road had surgery done on her broken ankle....and although you can see the white surgery scar still....and she says when it's real cold outside it aches a lot...her leg/ankle returned to looking as good as her other one does.
gosh....I hope mine will too. But..it's going to do what it's going to do - and I'll just have to accept that.
Thanks again, bear, for sharing your experience with me/us.

Linda, to fill in the open area the docs removed two layers of muscle from under my right shoulder (16 inch scar from arm pit down) and performed micro surgery to connect blood veins & a skin graft from the upper right thigh to cover the raw muscle.
All of this was done during surgery #4. No 5 was to replace plates & screws & cut back dead & infected bone & implant antibiotic chips into the area. No 6 was a bone graft from the left hip. A year later surgery #7 was to remove the hardware from #6.
I could have the size of the graft reduced now (they literally "shave" the area) but would result in another skin graft & a possibility of infection again & I'm not willing to risk it.
Arthritis set in between surgeries & reduced ankle movement by 50%.
I have become a great prognosticator of weather. A couple of years ago, in the middle of a hot cloudless summer day I told a guy I know it was going to rain that day. He told me I was a crazy freaking fool (not those exact words). Three hours a notable Houston summer deluge drenched the area & I made a believer of him
Still some day it hurts so bad I cant walk, sometimes it will go weeks without hurting.
Linda, dont worry about whats going to happen, what will be, will be.
Ron, yes I can walk on it and only in the last few months have I been able to walk some of the time without limping. Running or skipping, forget it.

Gosh...bear.....you have been through SO much. It's hard to believe anybody would have to endure all that surgery, pain and suffering.
I sure can understand why you wouldn't be willing to go through it all again. Boy....enough's enough.
Sit down.....I'll rub some soothing lotion on your leg, ankle and foot.....poor guy. I didn't realize you'd been through all THAT.

Linda, we all have our cross to bear. I believe this cross has changed me for the better.
I have a younger brother (by 3 years) I really dont care for. My wife, my mother & brother #3 all tell me I was just like him or he like me before I broke my leg.
I dont know how anyone put up with me if that is true.

Bear - I can understand that one
I used to be one of those type A personalities but more like Type A squared. It wasn't until I met someone worse than me that I actually started to change and mellow out. I ended up calling an old boss/mentor of mine and apologizing for being such a pain when we were working together.

Fenix, thanks
Ron, she shouldnt have the same problems. Her's isnt a open fracture like mine was.
I feel I was lucky from one point of view. half of those who have what is called "the open flap procedure" (transplant of muscle) reject the transplant and have to have it done over again.
Ironically several month ago I ran into a guy that was limping like me. As we compaired notes, I found he was the 3rd sucessful patient of the open flap procedure courtsey of the US Navy in the mid 70's.

Ahhhh...okay then Ron....just checking.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that huh? lol
And you and me both....never even thought about it being more than a simple surgery....put the bones back where they belong...cast...get up and walk again.
Bear has been through more than any 10 people should have to go through.

Actually Linda my case could have been worse, during the 2nd surgery they came close to taking my leg off below the knee.
I joked (then) with them & said if they had amputated my left leg, they would have to take the right one also.
I was looked at like I was crazy. Told them that way when I was fitted for artificial legs, I could have them made long enough so I would be height proportionate to my weight...They didnt appreciate my humor.
In the long run, it would have been less painful to be wearing a artificial leg.

fenix - I will be awaiting your call.
-----------
Oh...I don't know bear. I'm glad they didn't have to take it.
I've mentioned before my kid sister had hers amputated, mid thigh....and has had problems most of her life with it.
If you gain or lose weight....three pounds either way....the artificial limb doesn't fit properly anymore. Causes leg sores...which sometimes get infected....it's a mess too. And the phamton pains were bad for her for the first few years.....really bad. Now...just occassionally.
I'm glad you were just joking.....I too joke when things are hard....makes them easier to accept.

Bear you are very fortunate to have kept your leg, from looks of it. I too can predict most weather changes by the way my shin bone feels I have a lot of calcification and it looks larger but not like yours. Mine was a closed fracture and had 2 pins all the way through the leg above ankle and below knee to keep it stable and was flat of my back for 3 months. Army for you. I think I wore a cast for about 11 months with that darn break. It was in area that is very difficult to heal just above the ankle about 3 inches.
I also have a pin in my right elbow from same accident it was an open fracture and it will never fully straighten out. but it has been that way so long can't remember how it is to have a real flexible elbow.
Linda hope yours goes well and you don't have any delays in healing.

Car accident up in Alaska while in the Army.
Slippery roads up there. Head-on collision, I was real lucky to live after seeing the vehicle I was in. I was asleep in back seat, woke up in hospital. I don't sleep in vehicles no more with someone driving.

---------
irked....What a cute card....thank you.
---------
NearTheSea - Well....at least you were having some FUN when you hurt yourself. Being a clutz/klutz....and breaking your leg is embarrassing to no end.
------------
Orthopedic doc said surgery on Thursday....4 screws two on each side. Not going to put me out...other health concerns...so will give me an epidural and said "we can chat that way, while I'm fixing you up." lol No cast ...just 6" of thick padding and an ace bandage. Absolutely no weight AT ALL on it for the first 10 weeks.....then one of those velcro boots for who knows how long. With all the small fractures in both ankles....will most likely have to deal with arthritis down the road...said he didn't want to make it sound better than it was going to be....so looks like I won't be dancing at my youngest son's wedding. But...hopefully if all goes well...I should still be able to attend..."IF," he said, you're REAL careful and don't hit it while using a wheelchair. But did say we'd have to wait and see as that date draws nearer.
Darn it anyway. I remember so clearly 5 years ago when our eldest son got married...and how extremely proud I felt when he approached me and ask it he could have the Mother/Son dance with me. Was so hoping to share that with my youngest son too. BUT...maybe I can figure out someway to twirl my wheelchair around by then. lol
So.....
