I try. I bid on things but usually get outbid because of the proxy amount that I'm willing to pay (I want to get it at least a little under market value, the other bidders say "no way Jose" . That's a good sign though, that things are going fine. Bidders and buyers are out there, and spending for what they want and paying fair prices for the goods. Wouldn't want it any other way.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I buy regularly on eBay and Yahoo. I buy clothing for the family. Specialty books for my mother. Toys for my baby. Gifts to myself...
I LOVE buying at auction! My sales completely finance my buying, and that's the way I like it.

As a seller I do bid on yahoo and ebay not alot but I do bid on items that we might need to complete some collections we have and want to have finished also when I find a good price on things that will help me in selling scales camera and so on I try to find these at auctions frist.
This helps out others to return a bit of what I have made to the comunity.
I mean the car dealer in the brick and mortar world must eat you think he wont buy food from the super market of someone who buys his cars.
or the drugest who sells meds to the guy who owns the gas station buys gas from him. way I see it what goes around comes around.
Just another thought is that the I think the sellers that do bid on auctions where they sell will keep them on the up and up

Yes, and I love it. I've never had a bad experience, and 90% of the time, the item was better than I expected.
The personal service is a plus. And of course, you really can find just about anything on eBay.
I don't snipe, but I usually don't bid until the last 5-15 min of the auction. Then I place my bid and walk away.
I've dealt with mostly delightful sellers on eBay.

Loosecannon: YES, and WAY TOO OFTEN! But I love it. Love it, love it, love it. We talked about eBay at the in-law's yesterday after dinner. I get the same look that I get when I say that I've been shopping with QVC for 10 years. The reactions are a result of ignorance. They don't know anything about eBay or QVC, and they just snicker. Just like those people who still don't "believe in" chiropractic. Like it's some form of "voo-doo" that you have to believe in or it won't work.

I did buy a lot until I had a complete set of Frankoma. Now a book once and a while but that is it.
I really have to come up with something else to collect.
I have had only one problem since I started and that was some broken dishes from poor packaging. They sent me some more packaged much better and problem solved.

My experience is the same as sadie999's.
Good buys, mostly delightful sellers, an occasional item not what it should be.

Oh yes!! I support my avid reading habit by buying a lot of books both on ebay and yahoo. BTW hate half.com as search is not effective. I also occasionally buy clothing items for the grandchildren and vintage jewelry for the grandmother. Love that glitz!!
I've had very few disappointments and a lot of happy surprises. It is good to see how other sellers package and ship and how their descriptions compare to actual. Truthfully, I find that my standards are generally much higher than other sellers. I haven't returned anything but hope that slipping standards doesn't bring the whole thing down for all of us.

I have bought about 25 items on E-Bay: kids clothes, Birkenstocks, some bedding, a guitar, housewares, a gold ring, bubblewrap, CD's, books, odds and ends. All but one time I was happy with the purchase.
I am very careful to check feedback on the seller and I always buy when E-Bay seems slow. I've gotten some really good buys and most of the sellers were nice people.

Yes!
A couple years ago I had a house fire that destroyed almost everything, including an extensive library. I was pleased to be able to replace most of my books/tapes/cds/videos through eBay so I didn't have to max out my insurance coverage. I was even able to replace some favorite items of clothing.
I also buy a lot for resale, as so many sellers are either generalists or just don't research what they have. If I find some great deals, I often resell right on eBay.

Yes, whenever I can. I also buy on half.com. For example I found a stray "Toy Story 2" going for $10 on half.com and snapped it up.
Among family, friends and co-workers I know a lot of avid ebay buyers. Some have only recently gotten hooked after pooh-poohing the whole thing. Also, at work one friend recently quit to stay home with her kids [and sell on ebay!] and at her going-away party we made a bit of a "thing" about her ebay work. This let to a lot of interested questions, so I expect more folks will log on to give it a try!

Yes here. About 50/50. Sometimes I re-sell the item; most often I fall in love with it .
I either place a very early high max bid, or I snipe. One way or the other works for me. Seldom lose an item unless I choose to "let go".

ohhh yeahhh. i'm spending almost as much time buying as i am selling at this point!! or at least, looking to buy. most my experiences have been pleasant, and i've picked up some great deals. lots of times i rationalize my purchases by thinking i can always resell at a profit (use this excuse alot with the husband) also, its difficult to shop much at flea markets, etc., with my two little ones who get bored real fast. ebay is like one big candy store...

Yes. When I first started out I bought quite frequently. However nowadays I will purchase once in a blue moon.
I think being a buyer helps me to see my transactions through my valued customers eyes.
When I browse as a potential customer I do find some interesting auctions. Some show me how not to "sell" my items and myself while some teach me some good techniques.

I used to buy a lot of vintage collectible items on eBay, but have cut back quite a bit due to disappointments. Now I have a checklist that I go through on any auction that I am considering bidding on:
There should be no reserve, the condition of the item should be clearly stated, good seller feedback, shipping and handling charges clearly stated and reasonable, no 'payment by money order only', no music or other crap.
If all of these points are not met, I do not bid, and in fact I bid very little now. But my satisfaction level has gone way up.

I'm about 85% a seller and 15% a buyer. I buy books mainly, but I also have purchased jewelry and vintage clothing for myself and as gifts. Also vintage sewing items and patterns. In the beginning I was disappointed by much of the stuff that I bought, but as I became more savvy I have had fewer disappointments (as well as fewer purchases). Only one item has ever been lost in the mail, and the seller sent another immediately. I have re-sold about 1/3 of the items I purchased, mainly because they did not live up to expectations. Describing them accurately in my own descriptions helps keep the next person from the same disappointment and usually I have re-couped my money or made a small profit.

YES! I buy so much stuff on Ebay! I buy a lot to re-sell and a lot to keep. I'll often buy a box lot that has a few things in it I want for myself & then I re-sell the rest of the stuff. That was how I got started selling actually. It is so much fun! It's a tossup as to whether I buy or sell more.
jadejim- I agree about half.com. It SUX! Try amazon.com marketplace. The pricing may be a bit higher but the selection is way better & the ease of use is worth the extra cost IMHO.

I sell model trains and find E-bay to be by far the best place to buy model trains. I find things on E-bay that I would never find or much less have an opportunity to own. I also still get a kick out of receiving an item in the mail. It beats getting bills.

Buying is almost as much fun as selling. I buy something at least once a month. I have only had one bad experience and in fact threw the items away. I should have left neg feedback but didn't. I have thought about e-mailing her a nice (sincerely nice) letter to tell her how bad the stuff was but haven't done that either.
I would buy more but some seller charge soooo much for shipping that I won't even consider bidding on their item. I mean $5.00 on an item that would cost at the most $2.00 lst class is crazy. It's ok if someone wants to make a few extra bucks just add it to the bidding price up front.
Otherwise everything else I have bought I have loved and enjoyed and not regretted. Which category do you find box lots of stuff in??

I always check ebay for specific things before I buy in the store. If it's on ebay for a fair price I buy it. I hope to eventually do all my shopping on the web, except for clothes which I need to try on.

Yes. I probably buy twice as often as I sell. I would like to sell more, but also have a real job and my time is limited. I think that buying helps make me a better seller, though -- I can see the auction from the buyer's viewpoint.

I'm mainly a buyer on Ebay, but when I want to buy something I search Ebay first. I like to support my fellow sellers! But, if I can't find the item or find it for a reasonable price I'll look elsewhere.

I'm always on the lookout for great deals on Pocket Dragons and Disney stuff. Lately been checking out half.com for CD's (Yep, I was one of those that thought, "Oh those silly CD's will never catch on"...so now I'm rebuilding my collection.)
Last Christmas I did 95% of my buying online. Most of that on ebay. I hope to do the same this year (with the exception of the WONDERFUL deals I got doing the sales today).
I've tried buying from ebay to resale on ebay, but none of the items have actually made it back into the 'list' basket.

I do buy on eBay, though not as often as I sell.
I'm a bargain hunter, and eBay is often the best place to go to find the best deal on certain types of items like books and video games (compared to buying them retail). It looks like half.com is even better, and I made my first book purchase there this week.
It's also a good place to find odd stuff that isn't readily available elsewhere. I recently bought some vintage train print curtains for my husband to use in the "train room" where we're building his model train layout, and when we moved into our house earlier this year I found a replacement garage door opener on eBay.
Besides being a bargain basement and a treasure trove of goodies, eBay is often more fun than shopping elsewhere. I usually put in a moderate early bid, then if I'm outbid I love to snipe. I've been known to have as many as five sniping windows open at once.

paws4god- I buy mainly to support my toy habit. I buy in tons of other categories too though- I have bought books, paper/ephemera, clothes, gifts, & probably other stuff that I can't even think of right now via online auctions.
violetta- I feel the same way. Being a buyer has helped me sell better as well.

I like to buy on eBay (except lately I've run into deadbeat sellers). But when it's working well, eBay saves time and money. It's also fun bidding on the auctions, and you can find things that you would never find in your home town.
