"If you want exact postage to be charged ask the seller first…
That has been part of the discussion. The gripe is that some sellers are charging excessive postage.
If the seller is charging for labor, material, handling, gas to drive to the post office, electricity, etc., then the seller needs to specify that the shipping cost is not just the postage, but includes all of the above.
Unless indicated in the ad, the generally accepted definition of shipping cost by most buyers is what will the postage cost be.
If you are going to charge me for overhead other than postage cost, say so in the ad or when I email you for shipping (postage)cost before I bid.

Hi All,
Just a quick FYI. UPS covers the first 100.00. Then it's something like .35 (cents) for each additional 100.00 in declared value. I ship with UPS on the big items. Also good a good thing to do when shipping Ups is to have some photos of how you packaged it. It really helps with getting a claim done faster. They consider it added documentaion to support your claim.

shipping is "The Cost to get something from point A to point B"---cost may include more than just postage
Postage is what I pay the post office on it's way to Point B

Based on how often this topic comes up, I'd venture to say there is no generally accepted definition of "shipping cost", although it does appear that there are several (at least) generally assumed definitions.

Amy ... you're sorta right It does seem like "much ado about nothing", however everytime this issue is brought up, it tends to bring out some very strong emotions. I won't post mine here - long time readers already know how I feel about this!

If the S/h is not stated plainly in the TOS then don't bid.

Mike, why beat your head against the wall? You aren't going to change things no matter how much you bi*ch, moan and complain about it. Some sellers will charge exact postage only, others will charge less and others will add other shipping costs to the postage.
It's a fight you can't win..a situation you can't mold to your definition. Best thing is to find a fight you can win

Keep in mind when discussing shipping for online auctions that insurance and delivery confirmation if sellers use online payment services are no longer an option they are a must for any type of protection for the buyer and the seller.
All my shipping rates Now Include insurance and DC I do not give a choice any longer in order to offer paypal pay direct exchange path ballpoint bid pay and other options it is a must.
I also as part of shipping is a small Charge for custom packaging in every listing I have put up since December 1 this is stated clearly if you use any online payment services you better read there terms all require packages to be traceable online.
In Order to save much time and money in the case of lost packages the seller can refund wait the time out and collect the insurance claim so neither side loses in case of damage the seller can mail the insurance receipt to the buyer who can take the damage all to the PO if its under $50 for a instant refund. The seller can ask for a picture as proof of damage and save the return postage.
Postage buy the way is not an excessive unsolicited cost it is a fee the bid agrees to when they place a bid. Custom packaging as well is not cheap it cost me up words of $500 every three months for packaging related items to ship my items.
I have 20 year experience in custom packaging and I can tell you for sure my time is worth and effort packing and making custom boxes and packing is worth more then nothing in fact costs can run from $6 to $2000 depending on what’s being packed people where I work make from $9 to $15 per hour to do the packaging I think the extra $0.25 to $1 I might make from packing an Auction item is very reasonable and some time don’t even pay for materials and the fact that a buyer don’t care about what it cost me to do these things makes no different it costs and these cost must be paid and not out of the some times under .50 to $2 profit I make on each sale.
No amount of Attitude will change the cost of buying, selling or shipping.

When I am buying and a seller does not state shipping costs, I email them and ask what the cost is. If it is a fragile item and I know the cost is more than actual postal costs, I do not mind paying the extra as long as my item is packed properly with bubble wrap etc. I always send email with plenty of time allowed before the end of the auction to give the buyer time to respond. As a seller, I always put the actual shipping amount in my auction as I find that leaves to excuse for buyer remorse.

sgtmike -
I agree with you...I've never heard of, nor experienced, a seller forcing insurance upon me when it is not stated in the auction.
I think the included insurance for UPS is for up to $100.00 value.
