I've simply disagreed with Bebe about chats. I sincerely appreciated her inviatation and thanked her.
Based on information which has been copy pasted directly from chats on several boards, I don't agree that chats are always focused on fun topics. I prefer to keep my discussions about people above board and in the open so that some degree of accuracy can be expected. For example, Classic if you stated in chat that Helen's a drunk you could spread that lie without question. But if you tell that lie in the open I can demonstrate very easily that you have no basis for your statement.

yea...posting things about others who aren't even registered on the boards where you DO speak about them.....and they can't reply back to your statements about THEM...doesn't seen so "above board" to me.
Kind of sneeky, really.

Right, Kiara...so junior high sums it up. I too have seen my name mentioned at other boards where I'm not a member.
Linda, my statements are always backed up with a link available before they are made...always above board unlike yours and your ilk.
Anyone here can register at the RossShow with instant access...no credit card necessary. Everyone is welcome. In fact, your friend Hepburn is now welcome to post there. For awhile she spent some time in the dungeon but at least she had a forum of sorts.
Email is another mode of communcation that is not always private. "Friendly" email has been plastered across the internet on numerous occassions in an attempt to slander former friends. It's good to remember that a friend today may be an enemy tomorrow.

While I don't read all the other boards all the time or follow all the links, I probably miss a lot of what goes on but I've never seen Helen throwing a tantrum over me or talking bad about me so haven't had any need to call her on it.

I'll begin with saying that I did not take what Helen said about Chat as an insult.. as a matter of fact.. she was quite correct about the gossip as it is often part of chat.
The chat I was referring to is open and everyone is welcome to participate.. Drarcane announces Chat and all those who wish to join in are welcome. Everyone is invited to join, not everyone cares to. We had two new members join recently and the more the merrier.
It is getting together with a group of people from all over, who over the years you have become acquainted with on the boards, to say hi, how was your day, what's new, what do you think about, how does this effect you, some flirtation, some joking, some rants.. fast paced talk.. just talk..
Gossip about someone on the boards is part of it but usually there is always another to defend that said person. Like I said it is a party-line conversation.. meaningless chat..rarely does someone enter chat with an agenda to slander or hurt...
I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea... and sometimes it can be quite boring and silly, but most times we have a fun time and end the day with a chuckle..
It is not private.. as far as I understand, it is possible for someone to c&p the conversations..if they choose to do so..
Without trying to sound too needy, I think it is a place for those who are lonely for human contact..for what ever reason.. it is a connection.. that's all..
Life is very short.. enjoy it while you can!

Just to clarify a few things:
First, you CAN C&P from chat. No one claimed chat was secret or private.
Secondly, you CAN at least tell who is in chat with you and whether or not you trust them with whatever you want to say.
Third, chat is NOT something everyone is required to do, and it can sometimes be hard to keep up with a discussion. It's definitely a lot "lighter" than board postings, and often just a lot of silly babble. But it is fun from time to time.
Lastly, What's wrong with talking about other people? I do it all day long on the phone and in real conversations, and so do most people. It's not necessarily gossip, it's called discussion. I guess it depends on WHAT is said about a person, not the simple fact that they are being discussed. I see my name has come up earlier in the thread while I wasn't participating- but it's hardly something to complain about. Simply mentioning someone is NOT gossip.
Those who do not participate should not speculate.
Chat is fun. Message boards are fun. You don't have to choose one over the other or participate in both. It's just different forms of ENTERTAINMENT that you might choose to try. Or not.

Again, it's a grown up issue...something you wouldn't be able to understand at this point in your very delayed development.
People can agree with what someone else said....doesn't mean they're looking for a 'pat on the back'.
Some grownups can make decisions based on what they preceive to have happened - by what was actually SAID.....not on 'tag alongs' biased 'online friendships' who NEED to defend the crappy actions [insults] their friends hand out.
It will come, kiara, as your personal maturity level advances....I can only hope.

I agree with what Doc said.
AND I think 'chat' allows the posters to see one another in a much more balanced way. NOT just addressing issue they may disagree upon, but rather who they are as a 'more rounded' person.
I also think it could increase understanding of where other posters are coming from....according to whatever they're discussing.
I think there's room for both....to each his/her own.

Lindak, I don't claim anyone online as 'friend' because I witness how easily they can turn on one another. It's one thing to respect the way another posts or the way they treat me here or if they seem friendly to me but quite another to suddenly align with them always and consider them a 'friend' so your 'tag along' comments don't apply to me. But yes, I do agree with Helen often and I seldom agree with you because we are so radically different so you probably perceive things wrong.
Chat sounds fine for those who like that kind of thing. In RL I'm not a joiner and I hate doing anything that involves 'the girls' who love shopping together, gossiping and visiting back and forth. I have friends....... I'm just not like the rest of them who enjoy being together lots and they respect me for that and realize I'm somewhat of a loner. I agree, to each their own.
Edited to add that my 'junior high' comment about Chat was addressing Classic's comment about it.
