Obama regrets saying soldiers' lives 'wasted'
Apologizes for remark in Iowa campaign stop
February 13, 2007
BY LYNN SWEET Sun-Times Columnist
DURHAM, N.H. --
In his first stumble, White House hopeful Barack Obama on Monday took back words from the day before, when he said the lives of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq were "wasted."
Following his Springfield launch on Saturday, Obama wrapped up a three-day swing in the key primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire, ending at a University of New Hampshire rally where he assailed the "trivialization of politics" where "it is all about who makes a gaffe."
In this case, that would be Obama, the Illinois Democrat.
During his first press conference as a presidential candidate at Iowa State University, Obama, discussing his opposition to the Iraq war, said the war "should have never been authorized, and should have never been waged, and on which we've now spent $400 billion, and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted.''
"While the democratic party complains about everything THIS President does to protect our Nation": "What would a Democrat president have done at that point?"
"Apparently, the answer is: Sit back and wait for the next terrorist attack."

Wasted means not used to good advantage. If you can't see an advantage to this war then his statement is true. What an unfortunate loss of so many good lives.

Obama quickly corrected himself after he made the statement. God knows how many times Bush has mispoken and never corrected himself. Obama also said he would personally apologize to any military family that was offended. When was the last time you heard Bush say this?
From MSNBC
Stumbling out of the gate, Sen. Barack Obama said in his first presidential campaign news conference that the lives of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq were “wasted.” He quickly retracted the statement, and later apologized to anybody he offended.
While the gaffe received relatively little attention in the mainstream media, Obama’s statement is a discussion point at online political forums, where the Democrat is getting mixed reviews. Some say he’s got nothing to be sorry for. Others blast him.
“Not a good thing to say. Certainly a stumble. He’ll have to answer for it,” said a writer who goes by the name “whatda” at HOTSOUP, a politically minded online community. He said Obama’s quote is “indicative of his inexperience and shows a certain disconnect that I'm sure will be pounced on by Democrats and Republicans alike. (It) takes him down a peg or two as far as I'm concerned.”
But a writer named Joshua said Obama was only guilty of speaking “the unpleasant truth” about Iraq. “What else would you call it but wasted lives? What was accomplished in this war besides the total upheaval of an already unstable region? How were (U.S. lives) not wasted?”
“First off, I agree with Obama's wasted lives comment,” wrote “jlentz.” “It is sad that the truth offends some people but we have accomplished nothing in Iraq and in the end (President Bush’s) obsession to control the Middle East will probably waste a lot more lives.”
A participant called “Ezwriter” said the issue is bigger than lives lost in the past. “What can we do not to waste them tomorrow? Does Obama have the ability to do that?” No one knows. He’s untested. Will the comment hurt his chance of winning?”
No one knows that, either. But Obama got his candidacy off to an inauspicious start by saying last weekend that the war “should have never been authorized, and should have never been waged, and on which we've now spent $400 billion, and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted.''
Obama says he immediately realized he had made a mistake. Like other war critics, he has been careful to praise U.S. troops and say nothing that would sound unsupportive. ''I was actually upset with myself when I said that, because I never use that term,'' he told the Des Moines Register. ''Their sacrifices are never wasted. . . . What I meant to say was those sacrifices have not been honored by the same attention to strategy, diplomacy and honesty on the part of civilian leadership that would give them a clear mission."
He was asked Monday whether military families deserved an apology. “Well as I said, it is not at all what I intended to say, and I would absolutely apologize if any of them felt that in some ways it had diminished the enormous courage and sacrifice that they'd shown. You know, and if you look at all the other speeches that I've made, that is always the starting point in my view of this war.''
That’s true; none of his previous speeches declared that the lives of slain U.S. soldiers were wasted. He saved that gem for his first day as a presidential candidate.

It's my opinion that Obama made a mistake when he apologized for that remark. He should simply explain his language for those too dense to understand and then carry on.

It amazes me how Linda will defend her idol even when it is appearant that she is anti-military and anti-veteran.
I bet Linda will say her idol mispoke here:
Ann Coulter refused to explain -- and even expanded upon -- her recent claim that Rep. John P. Murtha is "the reason soldiers invented fragging," military slang meaning the intentional killing of a member of one's own unit. On a Denver radio show, Coulter referred to her fragging comment as one of her "best lines" and refused to confirm that she was not "suggesting that anybody should off John Murtha," stating only: "It is what it is." On Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, Coulter further expanded upon her statement, asserting that if Murtha "did get fragged, he'd finally deserve one of those Purple Hearts."

You do at least have to give Osama credit for correcting his mistake. Most demomorons would have brushed it under the rug.

I consider the lives of all those soldiers "wasted" and I fail to see why Obama had to correct the statement. Perhaps I would have phrased it as the war is a waste of human life and accomplised nothing in the interests of the United States.

It is surprising that it got reported since

Me too. Anybody with a lick of sense can see clearly what he meant. The only people "offended" by it either haven't read his actual words or are looking for cheap shots to make him look unpatriotic. It's the same thing they did to anyone who dared question Bush's party line in the last election. Expect more of this kind of nonsense.

Lordy the repugs are laughable...they are trying SO hard to find something wrong with Obama they have no trouble making absolute fools of themselves.
The "man" they bow down to and worship above their god, bushit, is the most inarticulate, poorly educated boob we've ever had for a president and they find fault with others!!!!?????
I haven't seen Obama nor any other Democrat ridculing the troops deaths by running around like a demented child looking under desks, pretending he's looking for WMDs...
They still haven't told me the level of coke use is acceptable in their standards for president...is it more than bush used or do they have a different standard for Democrats ?

And obama reapologized according the MSNBC News last night.
Doesn't appear to have the 'backbone' the radical Bush Bashers were so hoping for....otherwise he wouldn't have apologized TWICE now.

And, with all the HUGE scandals(ROFLMAO) that the repugs in here have exposed about Democratic candidates I sure haven't seen any of them bragging about the Republican candidates ????!!!!
How about Rudy(Marriage is Sacred, I know I did it three times family values guy) Gulianni ??

Gulianni is clearly the best choice for America. But if it came down to Osama or the witch, it would be Osama.
