Weeks after Betty Ford became First Lady, she underwent a mastectomy for breast cancer on September 28, 1974. Her openness about her illness raised the visibility of a disease that Americans had previously been reluctant to talk about. "When other women have this same operation, it doesn't make any headlines," she told Time magazine. "But the fact that I was the wife of the President put it in headlines and brought before the public this particular experience I was going through. It made a lot of women realize that it could happen to them. I'm sure I've saved at least one person—maybe more." Further amplifying the public awareness of breast cancer were reports that several weeks after Betty Ford's cancer surgery, Happy Rockefeller, the wife of vice president Nelson Rockefeller, also underwent a mastectomy.

Appears to me that kiara might think Mrs. edwards current illness getting so much worse might help??? get edwards the dem nomination? After all this could be a 'teaching' thing for the American voters? nope....
I dont'. They have too many others to choose from.
Her own doctor is hinting at how serious her condition is now....but the liberals just can't face that at all. tsk tsk tsk
Again they prove they live in denial about most things.

Cancer in a rib bone...IS bone cancer to me. Doesn't matter WHERE the original cancer came from....it's where it is NOW.
Linda--You really are a piece of work. I may not be an oncologist, but I know how to read. A lesion in the bone that has spread from a primary breast cancer is metastatic breast cancer. Learned that in school and on the job.
If you took the time to read the article I posted (probably not) you would understand that if the breast cancer has spread to bone only, the outlook is more favorable for long term survival and less aggressive treatment. If they find any lesions in soft tissue, more aggressive treatment is needed.

Death certificates are filled out with THREE causes of death.
The original cause in her case breast cancer.
Then the secondary cause....spreading to wherever.
Then the actual CAUSE of immediate death which is normally NOT listed as cancer...but rather that the patient died from lack of oxygen....blood vessel invasion...etc.
I know all about bone cancers.....and her own doctor is HINTING......read your OWN article....that hers is much worse...and has spread outside the bones.

From MedicineNet:
Cancers that begin in the bone are quite rare. On the other hand, it is not unusual for cancer to spread to the bone from other parts of the body. When this happens, the disease is not called bone cancer. Each type of cancer is named for the organ or the tissue in which it begins. Cancer that spreads is the same disease and has the same name as the original, or primary, cancer. Treatment for cancer that has spread to the bones depends on where the cancer started and the extent of the spread.

I never said any such thing.
But there have been several oncologists interviewed who HAVE shared their expertise on this issue - with her spreading cancer....and yes, they ALL have have GREAT credibility in my eye.
When you see her personal doctors prognosis....please feel free to share it with all of us. So far...they've only hinted it is VERY serious.
And NO oncologist can PREDICT the future....they just give educated ODDS.
That is the REALITY of spreading cancers.

coincoach -
There are several kinds of bone cancers. Maybe you would like to read up on all of them.
============
Types of bone cancer
What is bone cancer - are there different types?
Yes there are two main types of bone cancer
Primary bone cancer that started in the bones
Secondary bone cancer that has spread to the bones from somewhere else in the body
Secondary bone cancer
Most people with cancer in the bones have secondary bone cancer. The treatment they have depends on where the original cancer started. In other words, what type of cancer has spread to their bones.
There is more information about secondary bone cancer in the Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer sections of CancerHelp UK.
If you would like more information about anything to do with secondary bone cancer, contact one of the cancer information organisations in Help and Support. They will be happy to help. They often have free factsheets and booklets which they can send to you.

Had to go to the UK for that one, huh? I learned these terms in school at NYU and the definition of what is NOT called bone cancer in my C & P(MedicineNet) is what is accepted medical terminology in the US. However, this is just semantics. Primary bone cancer is usually much more deadly, although treatments have improved. If Mrs. Edwards rib were biopsied, they would find the same cancer which was in her breast. Even though you booked surgery and hung out with oncologists, your arrogance is misplaced. My education and my career are in medicine and I'm good at it. You do not need to tell me to read up on it as I continue my education to this day. You want to talk accounting, geography, you would make mincemeat out of me, but not in medicine.

We are all "goners" in the sense that we will all die.... some before Elizabeth Dole. Has your convoluted thought process somehow reached the conclusion that John Edwards cannot deal with a serious illness or death in his family as other presidents have throughout U.S. history?
In the context of political control, George Bush is a "goner". In 2008, Republicans in general are "goners". Any Democrat nominee will be a winner.

Linduh says, "Did you have three family members who ALSO had bone cancer like I have???? QUIT embarrassing yourself with your ingorant statements."
By those standards alone, I would assume you would hold yourself accountable for lacking family values. Why would you be here on the RT arguing your ignorant/bigoted beliefs when you have people in your own family dying of cancer? Shouldn't you be on a couch somewhere crying your eyes out spending every last waking minute with them??? It seems your the one with such IGNORANT (not ingorant) statements.
And again, LINDUH HAS FAILED TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS PUT BEFORE HER. Many of us have asked about her views of Rudy and Newt's marriage/adultery history... and as predicted all she has done is blast Clinton, Edwards, and liberals in general. The problem of marriage and infidelity isn't with the leading 3 Democratic Presidential candidates, the problem is with the REPUBLICANS.
QUIT CHANGING THE SUBJECT AND SPEAK YOUR MIND ON THESE REPUBLICANS, or are you just a typical chickensh!t neocon?

No, coincoach, I didn't "need" to go to the UK ....I did so because you were arguing that my calling her RIB cancer, BONE cancer was incorrect. YOU said it was to be referred to as breast cancer.
I only posted that paragraph to show you OTHERS DO refer to cancers of the bone as BONE cancers...and don't ALL call it by the primary cause of the cancer.
Hope that is clear to you now....and NO you will NEVER 'run circles around me' with your medical knowledge. LOL LOL LOL

Ego boosting?? How much more is necessary for your ego, Linda_K?
You claim you seldom worked outside of the home but suddenly in the last while didn't you say you've worked where secret government papers crossed your desk and you had to pass special security screening, you worked in an HIV clinic so were an expert on AIDS and knew more than anyone else that posted here, you worked in an abortion clinic so were an expert on that and knew more than anyone else posting here and now you've worked with oncologists and are an expert on cancer and know more than anyone else, including what doctors have said about Elizabeth Edwards. You claim you know more about what is happening on the ground in Iraq than others posting here and claim that you know more about military affairs and what goes on in the government than anyone else here. Amazing! Truthfully, at this rate you will soon become a rocket scientist just by posting at the RT all day.

I think the whack pack has the Republican candidates confused with Jerry Falwell or something. They assume because they accept people's endorsements they adopt their agendas. Think of it this way: the Dems have been promising minorities all kinds of stuff for decades and have delivered nothing. Since neither have stood on soapboxes, their marriage count is immaterial.
And while Helen may laughably think the 2008 election is in the bag, it is only because she underestimates the Democrat's power of self destruction. They could easily nominate Hillary or Obama and be guaranteed a loss. Then we can hear the wails about how some smart manager like Rove "stole" the election, LOL.

Linda--never said I "run circles" around you. As much as you'd like to think differently, your medical knowledge, is very limited, unless you think that having relatives with illnesses qualifies you as an expert. In that case, I should be able to design buildings from hanging around my Uncle Harry, the architect.
I am not boosting my ego, which is very confident when it comes to medicine. As I said before, I know my strengths and my weaknesses. Accounting--over my head. Geography--can't find my way out of a paper bag. Medicine is the subject I know best, have an education in and have worked within for many, many years in a clinical capacity.

desquirrel said the many marriages of republicans candidates doesn't matter. She said "Since neither have stood on soapboxes, their marriage count is immaterial". I say but what about morals?
Between Rudy and his (been to the gas station often bride)6 marriages. The "bride" was trying to hid one marriage saying she was married twice.
Want to know the truth about Rudy and his latest bride ask a New Yorker.
desquirrel talks about "self destruction" its fools like her that voted for BUSHY twice. Talk about SUPER SELF DESTRUCTION.
Jerry Falwell she says, hells bells most republicans candidates are running away from Falwell except the flip flopper McCain.
NO ONE IS BUYING NEW-CON BULL ROAR ANY LONGER THEY ALREADY SELF DESTRUCTED.

In these two years or less the voters will see more clearly just how true that is. I believe some are already noticing much of that now. They sure are angry that the dems are pretty much doing what the republicans did.....continuing the war....continuing with spending...etc. All the things the voters THOUGHT they see the dems make changes in. lol lol
Oh...the truth rather than all their 'talk'. All talk....no action. tsk tsk tsk
