Lucy: Your kitchen has sounded yummy from the moment I first heard about it. Take a picture sometime and post it!

So--what it's looking like for my kitchen is white ceramic tile on the countertops, white appliances and sink, that adobe color on the walls, and. . . something different painted on the cupboards.

Yeah, Adele, I'll take some pics as soon as I can. Maybe it's time to call the contractor to paint the Z-brick. Then I'll feel like it's presentable, picture-wise.

Maybe a darker shade of the wall color on the cabinets would be nice in your kitchen. Don't forget the floor... Parquet? Strip hardwood? In the kitchen and dining area?

ohmslucy - I was thinking about you the other day! they had ableskivvers whatever on the travel channel! They were ooohing and ahhhhing and eating them like they were having orgasms

I like Rachel Rays stove - Chambers. I was curious about what kind of stove it was and looked it up. There are HUGE fans of this stove! Would love to see one in person.

silly girl - scrape off that zbrick yourself! they have some great tin reproductions at Lowes and Home Depot now for back splashes.

roady if you want stainless - buy it. nothing beats a happy woman in her kitchen.

I'm going to replace my dishwasher stove & microwave with stainless to match the fridge.

heck even white appliances get dirty.

Okay GG and Adele, you talked me into it!

Here are a couple of pics of my almost redecorated kitchen.

GG, since you mentioned Aebleskiver, here's a link to that wonderfully funny thread from a few years back. Sparkz, Jack, Tom, Adele, Tom, Fluffy, Blueyes and some we haven't seen in FOREVER checked in. Did I miss anyone?

So many silly, goofy ideas! The antique escargot pan which was the topic is on the wall over my stove.

As far as removing the Z-brick - ain't gonna happen. It's put up with mortar. If I tried to take it off the plaster underneath would come with it. Since I don't have a plastering contractor on tap I think I'll just paint the darn stuff.

Rachael Ray's stove is indeed a honey! I love the way the broiler lifts up.

Thanks for the advice, but how do I flush the suds out?
I have been rinsing and washing on an empty load and still it gets stuck in the washing stage/rinsing stage and wont budge.
Yeah, buying a new washer is more like it,this piece of calypso movement crap has been discontinued.

Hwahwa, maybe if you ran a load of towels through on hot with a gallon of vinegar it might get rid of the excess detergent?

I finally got my washer clean after several loads.

What a nuisance!

Once you DO get the suds out, use less detergent.

Love your kitchen, Lucy! That red floor is stunning. I hate to admit that we put up a small wall of that Z-brick in the kitchen of our first house (1965). Wonder if it's still there. . . . we did NOT use mortar.

Helen, I agree that it's a refreshing change to see some new faces here.

Lucy, like Roadsmith said, the red floor is stunning. I like your glass cupboard doors too.

Hwahwa, most sites say a cup or two of vinegar to clean out the excess soap. This one mentions it and has lots of other uses for vinegar.

http://blessingsforlife.com/hometips/vinegar.htm

I recently discovered that vinegar and baking soda works good to clean drains and it bubbles up like a science experiment.

I love my kitchen..everybody prefers it for sitting and talking...white walls, bright YELLOW cabinets, golden hardwood floors(original), blue sink (the dishwasher ), blue rafters, appliances (2) that DON'T MATCH but work quite well. Curtains change frequently from orange chiffon (makes the kitchen glow!) to vintage Sears flowered cafes to yellow polka dots, a round table (vintage tablecloths) surrounded by antique chairs that DON'T MATCH (!) but work quite well. It's eclectic, cheerful, comfortable and the BEST part is ...Martha Stewart would be appalled !

....and no, I don't cook...there's a stove there somewhere...I guess.

Too much suds- cold water with vinegar. try less detergent next time starting with half as much. It may be the water softness in your area....

OMG_ I misspelled vinegar like this viniger
and right click to correct spelling and see what choices they give you. SO politically incorrect!!!!!!!!!! Sorry I was dumbfounded and could not pass this one up. Spell correct does not even have some words in the list but they put this in there go figure.................

Right on, Helen! After reading this, I can't believe how everyone is getting along!

Roadsmith, you need your bum spanked. I can't believe you said washing dishes by hand is a pain! LMHO!!

Lucy, I love what you've done with your kitchen! Is the brick on the wall wallpaper? I would paint that top half (to the door frame) in black chalkboard paint, if you're going to change it.

MAMA DON'T 'LOW NO BUM SPANKIN' ROUND HERE. Sorry, Kraft. At our cabin I wash dishes manually. Here at home I'm just too danged busy to do that and have gotten (yes, I admit it) very spoiled with modern wonders.

Mingo, how about a picture of your kitchen? Sounds like a great color scheme.

Adele, I'm shocked, I say, shocked! You voluntarily, on purpose, put up Z-brick?

Kraft, I wish it was wallpaper. Would make my life a WHOLE LOT SIMPLER! Z-brick is 1/4" thick brick, set in very rough, sandy mortar.

If it was white or normal brick red, I'd leave it alone. BUT that streaky black has got to go. Painting is slow, slow, slow. Hours and hours and all I've gotten done is primer on part of it. It runs over that door to the right and then around another, smaller, china cabinet. I'm thinking I better call the painter! They could spray it!

GG - I wish Z-brick had been discontinued before it started. Terrible stuff.

OML - how do you get into that door to the left of the microwave?

I had relatives that actually did a whole wall in z brick and loved it.

....neighbors who had multi colored glitter sprayed onto their ceiling not too long ago. (I had to bite my lips on that one...)

OML you can come help me chip away at the tile laid in the foyer which we're going to replace....I promise you it's much more time consuming than painting the z brick!!!

as for photos I was thinking that about roadie. I wonder if she could photoshop a picture of her kitchen with white appliances versus stainless steel and see which ones she likes better.

we have a natural wood fence/entryway attached to a more recently installed white vinyl fence. we have discussed painting the natural wood fence white to match - would replace it with more white vinyl fence but the sizes don't match up and would require $$$$ to replace.

Some say "don't do it you'll be sorry you painted it" and others say do it. we are half and half. I figured out the other day that I could take a photo of it and replace the natural wood fence and paint it white and decide if we liked it well enough to bite the bullet and do it.

GG - That cabinet is pretty much unused, just some brooms and mops I oughta toss. The microwave is on a cart. It swings out whenever I need to get into that little cubbyhole, which is seldom. The pantry, washer/dryer, breakfast table, etc., is in the dinette, which is the other end of the kitchen.

I don't envy you, chipping out tile. Maybe you can put a floating floor in your foyer and leave the tile underneath.

If Adele posted a picture of her present kitchen I bet we'd make the decision for her! Come on, Adele, pictures... If I can do it, you can do it!

Come to think of it, GG, how about a picture of your fence?

OML you really have a pretty kitchen - I love it!

floating floor - I can tell anyone all they want to know about installing a wood laminate floor. we just did that in the living room when we replaced the carpet. we bought travertine for the kitchen, foyer and adjoining guest bathroom. the kitchen and bathroom has/had linoleum. we are replacing all three with travertine for consistency since they all flow into one another. there is no choice but to chip up the tile in order to do all three. 2 tiles were already broken anyway.

for the best laminate floor go to:
http://www.ifloor.com/articles/lam/lamwars2.html

amazingly enough pergo is NOT the top rated laminate floor.

pictures! a challenge! that will have to wait another day but I will be glad to post them.

GG, thanks for the compliments! I've been working on this house since 2000. Finally I feel like my nose is at the top of the wall. Not a whole heck of a lot left to get done.

Great plan you have for your entry. You're right, it's gotta match. I'm picturing it as similar to a home I had a while back. I put hardwood parquet in the kitchen, foyer and adjoining guest powder room. It opened up the whole area. Made the whole place look much bigger. Good luck - all I had to tear out was vinyl and carpet! How big is the foyer?

Had neighbors a few years ago who put Pergo in their whole downstairs. Entry, kitchen, living room, dining room, etc. It was okay, I guess, but to me it looked like kitchen counters on the floor. They had four little kids, though, so it was a great choice for them but hardwood would have looked much better.

I even pour a few gallons of water into the washer hoping to dilute the sud,it does not work.
Our water is not soft,it is hard, too hard.

Hwahwa, where exactly in your washer is the excess detergent? Is it caked up underneath the agitator?

Sounds like you need to figure out some way to remove it other than by just running the machine.

This might sound strange but can you fill the washer and then siphon the water out? Hopefully the detergent will go away with the water.

Mingo, your kitchen does sound cheerful and comfy. The kitchen in my last house was a 'sitting and talking' one that friends always gathered in too. When I sold I was a bit worried it wasn't modern enough (except for the appliances) but the buyers really liked it.

OhMsLucy--
I have a 1920's mediterranean also. Love your kitchen!! Funny, I had a white floor put in when I remodeled (stupid) now I want to go with the same flooring as you have chosen. Mine had pea-green tiles with a burgandy border before YUK!! Have you happened across any good sites for this type home?
