Hi mrpotatoheadd,

Without giving much more away, I can see why you ask the questions. In brief:

(1)Nobody knows what an item is really worth on eBay until the auction is closed, right? The same item can go for $10 one day, $45 the next. We've all seen that. To try and find out what this particular item is going to go for, you need to test the bidding market with a bid of your own. But you stay under your own self-imposed maximum so that there is room for a snipe bid. Sniping at a level ABOVE your maximum is not what I would call effective bidding! If you snipe just so you can win an auction (regardless of price or actual value), you're not in my club.

(2)Yes, other bidders will know you were interested in the item. If you don't now hold the current High Bid though, and they do, then they'll assume you've given up (that they've topped you out with their last bid). Little do they know you have quite a way to go (a fact they will learn when it's far too late for them). Complacency is their undoing....

I'm not going to say anymore, but I think that answers your questions? Hope that helps...

Not really. I still don't understand why you feel a need to "test the bidding market with a bid of your own" until the last moment if you already know what your maximum bid will be.

As long as your system works for you, I guess that's all that matters, though.

Mintleslie, it appears you have strong feelings against sniping as a buyer, since you have posted so in 3 sniping threads.

I would truly like to understand why.

I'm not trying to start an argument, but I find sniping works for me as a buyer, and I'd like to hear another opinion. I'd like to understand what you gain as a buyer by refraining from sniping. of course any other buyer who also refrains from sniping is also welcome to answer this question.

Thanks in advance.
