In the first 100 Hours.

The new House worked across party lines to pass legislation to:

Make Americans safer here at home

We made our very first vote the implementation of the independent, bipartisan 9/11 Commission national security recommendations.
Make our economy fairer

We voted to increase the minimum wage for the first time in 10 years—to give American workers an overdue pay raise.
Make college more affordable for every American

We voted to cut student loan interest rates in half.
Make America more energy independent and help fight global warming

We voted to roll back multi-billion dollar taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil companies – already enjoying record profits.
We will reinvest here at home in renewable energy and energy efficiency – spending our energy dollars in the Midwest, not the Middle East.
Offer hope for new cures to devastating diseases

We voted to expand research and help unlock the promise of stem cell therapies to alleviate human suffering and cure diseases.
Help reduce the cost of drugs for seniors and Americans with disabilities

We voted to require Medicare to leverage its substantial bargaining power to buy prescription drugs and pass the savings on to the people.
Clean up Washington and the fiscal mess

We put the interests of all Americans ahead of the special interests by passing tough Congressional ethics reform, restoring “pay-as-you-go” budgeting, and restricting spending earmarks.

In the First 100 Days

The first 100 hours was just a beginning. In the first 100 days, we addressed the most pressing issue of our time – the war in Iraq. And on other immediate challenges, where there had been a failure to act, this Congress stood up for the American people.

We honored our commitment to our veterans and troops, restored investments in health care and education, gave long overdue aid to the victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and worked to restore accountability in government. We have a fiscally responsible budget that reflects the values of the American people.

The new House passed legislation to:

Strengthen our National Security and Provide a New Direction in Iraq

Support the troops and oppose an open-ended commitment to the President’s failed strategy in Iraq—calling for responsible redeployment of most U.S. troops by August 31, 2008.

Require the President to ensure troops meet Defense Department standards for training, equipment, and length of deployment.

Hold the Iraqi government accountable to meet the President’s benchmarks for progress.

Refocus the fight against terror on Afghanistan and al Qaeda.

Tackle the military and veterans’ disgraceful health care crisis.
Restore Fiscal Responsibility and Grow our Economy

Cut the deficit and balance the budget over five years.

Create good jobs by investing in renewable energy and new technologies for an energy independent America.

Guarantee American workers free choice in bargaining with employers.
Develop a Budget that Reflects American Values

Extend health care coverage to millions of uninsured children.

Protect middle-income families from being hit with an AMT tax increase.

Restore critical funding to education, law enforcement, medical research, and health care – reversing years of harmful cuts.

Invest in our national security and provide the largest veterans’ funding increase in U.S. history.

Open the door to college to millions of students by increasing Pell Grants.

Provide overdue housing, infrastructure, and education aid for the survivors of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Restore Accountability to Washington

Clean up government contracting abuses and ‘no bid’ contracts that companies like Halliburton and KBR have made infamous.

Strengthen protections for government whistleblowers who expose fraud or safety concerns.

Protect the public’s right to know, strengthening the Freedom of Information Act.

Restore “checks and balances” oversight by investigating the military health care crisis, Iraq and Hurricane Katrina reconstruction, and the firing of U.S. Attorneys.

NEXT ON THE AGENDA

We will work to:

Defend our Country

Fight terrorism with a greater focus on those who attacked us on 9/11, on homeland security, and on keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists.

Improve our military readiness by rebuilding a 21st century force capable of projecting power and our ideals to protect our country and our interests.

Demand accountability and end the “rubber stamp” approach to Congressional oversight of the war in Iraq, the fight against terrorism, and homeland security.
Grow our Economy

Invest in 25,000 new highly-trained science, math, engineering, and technology teachers, and 100,000 students in the fields that fuel the Innovation Economy.

Double basic R&D funding and focus funds on high-risk, high-reward early stage research.

Expand ‘always on’ broadband Internet, targeting rural and underserved regions.

Pass a strong new agriculture bill for family farmers and ranchers who will lead the way to an energy independent America.

Help make home ownership affordable and make lending institutions more accountable.

Promote bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform that secures our border, strengthens our economy, protects American workers and fixes our broken system.
Care for our Children and Families

Dramatically expand access to quality health care for America’s children.

Expand and improve our most successful pre-school program, Head Start.

Convene a Children’s Summit, to ensure the best science guides policy on child care, children’s health, and early learning.

Treat mental health care the same as other medical coverage.

Expedite FDA approval and enhance the safety of life-saving drugs.

Provide more support to local police and strengthen oversight of Internet child safety.
Protect our Planet

Reduce our dependence on foreign oil to help combat rising gas prices.

Increase the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency to reduce emissions, helping to protect future generations from climate change.
Promote innovation to make America the world leader in clean energy technologies.
Restore Accountability

Break the link between legislation and lobbyists by passing lobby reform.

Strengthen our democracy and protect the integrity of our elections with paper trail accountability and reforms to prevent voter intimidation.

ROFLMHO....

NOW....which of ANY of those two long posts are bills that they've actually PUT on the President's DESK to be signed, helen

LOL Always deceptive....always 'working/twisting' the terms..

The bill for min wage was ONLY agreed upon LAST NIGHT. Up until then....it hadn't been.

Much on your list helen, only ONE house or ONLY the Senate passed. That doesn't MAKE THEM LAW, helen.

Both houses have to pass them and the president HAS TO SIGN THEM.

You've missed that the President HASN'T signed them helen.

And it's pretty pathetic to read the list how they're going to 'protect' America.....when so many of them have been SAYING they wanted us to admit defeat and get out of Iraq.

lol lol

Hate to tell you this, but when one country FLIES the 'WHITE FLAG OF SURRENDER' that does NOT mean victory.

That means, as you wish to happen, we've given up and let AQ win.

We haven't, we're NOT going to...and you'll have to get a president of your own in the WH BEFORE we'll EVER let America admit defeat again.

But they SAY they passed them. When they HAVEN'T.

Personally I think it's better to admit defeat, call it victory, and save lives than to go on and on with a failed war policy killing who knows how many more people just to save face......

Still no answer from bushit or linduh on what exactly constitutes "victory".

Still no answer from ANY neocon on why, if they hate Muslims so much and swear that they are all out to get us, why we are fighting for them in Iraq ????

WASHINGTON - President Bush signed a bill Friday to pay for military operations in Iraq after a bitter struggle with Democrats in Congress who sought unsuccessfully to tie the money to U.S. troop withdrawals.

linduh , that's pretty old news...it's been all over for two days...only the formal signing today.

Get with it.

Yes, I'm sure that it's very hard for you to see money being spent on Americans but you are , of course, so happy that the meaningless blodshed and carnage will continue in Iraq. Iraq, the country filled with Muslims that you hate so much but want our troops to die and be mutilated for.

I'm sure you're doing the happy dance knowing that more children will be blown to bits.

However, no one thought the war would be ended overnight EXCEPT for the REPUBLICANS who said it would be a "three week cakewalk"....ANOTHER LIE!

Yup, voters will realize there is a prblem in congress...not ENOUGH Democrats !

We'll take care of that in 08...

LOL

You have NO reason to believe that will happen in '08.

Especially after the radical left sees that the dems offered SO many promises that they haven't been able to keep. NOT ENOUGH radical libs to get them passed.

This war funding bill is only one....but a HUGE one.

The voters were lied to...told IF IF IF they put dems in congress, and they did, then they'd be SURE and remove our troops from Iraq.

LOL LOL

The gutless dem party has done NO SUCH thing. AND it's not like the dem party couldn't have presented a bill to NOT FUND the war at all....thus stopping the war immediately and requiring the President to bring our troops home.

CLUE PHONE RINGING They DIDN'T. They've taken almost SIX months to play all these games and then CONCEED to the President

Not even another bill to STOP funding the wars. LOL

You may pretend their voting TO give Bush the bill he wanted....isn't that big of a deal....but radical liberals on moveon.org/etc are FLAMING MAD.

Angry MoveOn calls for Iraq backbone

By: Josephine Hearn
May 23, 2007 06:27 PM EST

Anti-war groups resent Democratic dealmaking.

Anti-war activists vowed they will have long memories about the deal Democratic leaders struck with the Bush administration this week on Iraq war funding, warning that they will exact retribution from lawmakers in both parties in 2008.

Enraged by what they considered capitulation by Democrats, anti-war leaders vowed to redouble their efforts at defeating the next funding request when it comes up as expected in September. The group MoveOn.org, which previously had been an ally of the Democratic leadership on the war issue, in a statement raised the specter of "in-district advertising and recruitment of primary challengers" as punishment for Democrats who supported the deal.

The group called on its 3 million members to help in a last-ditch effort to defeat the bill -- a campaign virtually no one on Capitol Hill expects to succeed. MoveOn circulated a flier among lawmakers' offices reading "Congress: Have some backbone. Vote No on the supplemental."

Others said they were surprised that politicians they had hoped would be allies did not show more spine in the showdown with President Bush. "Some of us were just stunned that the Democrats would go this far" in compromising with the White House, observed former Rep. Tom Andrews (D-Maine). "We were expecting more of a fight," said Andrews, who now serves as national director of Win Without War, a coalition of groups against the Iraq war. "It's as if the election never happened."

Rep. James P. McGovern (D-Mass.), a prominent opponent of the war, was similarly disappointed with the compromise House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) made with Republicans.

"I wasn't ready to fold," he said. "I'm upset that we're where we are on this."

Anti-war groups had been in daily contact with Democratic leaders over the war funding measure. Some had supported earlier versions of the bill that placed more constraints on the president.

The issue will also echo on the presidential campaign trail, where Senate Democrats such as Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) will be forced to cast votes on the funding measure -- potentially setting themselves up for the same attacks now being rained on House leaders.

Some activists had privately feared that Democratic leaders were losing their resolve to stage a protracted fight with the White House over wartime funding. Pelosi had announced earlier that the House would not leave for the Memorial Day recess without a new funding bill, a signal to some of a looming defeat.

"When they put out that deadline, people realized that we were going to lose," said an aide to an anti-war lawmaker. "Everything after that seemed like posturing."

Nope....that's just an un-American dream.

And today...the liberals proved it. All that talk and most of them wouldn't vote to NOT fund this war."""

THEN she switches BACK to it's bushit's war :
""We're STAYING in Iraq UNTIL they ask us to leave, or THIS President makes THAT decision.""

Well, it IS bushit's war, HIS responsibility, all on his shoulders.

Now with all her joy at more carnage and all her screamimg about the Democrats who she thinks are so cowardly for not cutting funds she forgets the the ONE BIG FACT....

IF the Democrats HAD voted to cut funding....BUSHIT WOULD'VE just VETOED IT.

from a less rabid democrat - who can see the situation with a little more clarity. lol

===================

As a tactical matter, it could have been useful for the Democrats to move another bill containing timelines to Bush's desk for a second veto, simply to underscore the president's unwillingness to seek bipartisan accord on a change in policy.

But these are the brute facts: Democrats narrowly control the House but don't have an effective majority in the Senate since Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) votes with the Republicans on the war and Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) is still too ill to vote.

Democrats, in short, have enough power to complicate the president's life, but not enough to impose their will. Moreover, there is genuine disagreement even among Bush's Democratic critics over what the pace of withdrawal should be and how to minimize the damage of this war to the country's long-term interests. That is neither shocking nor appalling, but, yes, it complicates things. So does the fact that the minority wields enormous power in the Senate.

What was true in January thus remains true today: The president will be forced to change his policy only when enough Republicans tell him he has to. Facing this is no fun; it's just necessary.

I am happy with this, could be more but with a president who hates Americans it's pretty good::

"""The final bill includes $17 billion in unrelated domestic spending, a slight reduction from the $21 billion that Congress added to the first package. The minimum-wage increase would bump the hourly rate to $7.25 an hour from the current rate of $5.15 over the next two years. The wage increase was one of the Democrats' 2006 election promises, and was attached to the war bill to guarantee that it would reach Bush's desk. ()

The bulk of the funding -- around $100 billion -- would continue military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan."""(well, NOT that part)

""The nonmilitary spending includes $6.4 billion for Gulf Coast hurricane recovery efforts and $3 billion in emergency aid to farmers, for relief from drought and other natural disasters. An additional $1 billion would pay for port and mass-transit security upgrades.

Children's health-care funding would increase by $650 million."""(Haha linduh )

Other domestic beneficiaries include state HIV grant programs, mine safety research, youth violence prevention activities, and pandemic flu protection. About $3 billion would fund the conversion of U.S. military bases that are scheduled to close."""
