Generally, nursing homes accept patients who have the funds to pay for a few years and then after all funds are depleted they qualify those patients for Medicaid.

The typical situation is that a private room is offered to private pay residents. When their private funds are depleted after several years, these patients qualify for Medicaid which the nursing homes are required to accept. The newly qualified Medicaid patients are then transferred out of the private room to an area shared by other patients without money. Nobody is tossed out on the street.

For example, my mother in law qualified as a private pay patient for several years and as such enjoyed first class care with a private room. When her funds were depleted, she was qualified for medicaid, transferred to a shared area and died there several years later.

Thanks,Helen.
Does that apply to folks in independent living and assisted living?
Just talked to an old neighbor of mine from New Orleans, after Katrina she moved here and live in an independent living place ,it was 1430 and now 1480 a month.
There is a van which takes them shopping on weekdays but not weekend and she ran out of prescription drug over the weekend.
It is to far for her to walk to Walgreen and she knows no one in the facility who can take her there and her sister is not well.
Dont they have services in the home for running light errands?
How do you expect oldies who dont drive to go to the store?

Hwahwa, I don't know much about independent living or assisted living. I imagine the quality of support differs from state to state. My mother in law was able to drive and live alone until she became mentally disabled with alzheimers.

Hwahwa, have this person call the county and talk to someone about help for seniors. Or call the local hospital for agencies that can help.

An elderly friend of mine has her meds mailed to her, she has numbers to call for free or low cost(pay what you can) rides. There are many forms of in home care, some you pay for , some have volunteers.

There's still a lot of aid out there despite Republican tax cuts that eliminated tax-saving ideas like free home cleaning for seniors.

Wanna be a real good friend...do the calling for them.

thanks ,I will do it now.
I guess last time I saw her every thing seems to be fine-making friend in dining room and playing bridge and taken to stores in a van??
and now she said she has no friend, van does not run on weekend and walgreen is too far away and relative is sick.

You should go get her and take her to Walgreens. Go on now.

Or go get her meds and take them to her. If she calls Walgreens they'll let you pick them up. She could call a cab if worse comes to worst.

Pay for her cab. Call it for her. You should be helping her, not dallying here.

She will probably be better off without the prescription.

But if she insists...

I see that Walgreens is on line now and for 1.95 they will mail your friend her prescription.

Good God helen....you're not a doctor and shouldn't be telling others they might not need their meds - or they might be better off without them. How in the WORLD would you even THINK you have any knowledge for anyone.

You're practicing medicine without a licence. That's breaking the law.

I know bear....and they use their broken crystal balls all the time.

To even suggest someone who might need medication might be better off without it....when they don't even KNOW that persons personal medical circumstances....is BEYOND NUTS.

But yep, that's helen and mingo alright.

Linda, until you arrived, the tone of this thread had become playful. And to anyone with a functioning brain, my remark was clearly in the spirit of that trend.

It's really unfortunate that you don't have a sense of humor.

Remember, play nicely with Mingo and Coincoach because without them all that you can do is post threads with zero responses.

Sure helen.....you have NO right to suggest any such life altering suggestions for ANYONE. joke or not. And I didn't take it as a joke.

It's just you - back-peddling as usual. You had to think about a response for a while I notice. Now it's supposedly a 'joke'.

It's NOT a laughing matter. It's someones HEALTH....which is VERY serious. And you're NOT in any position to be suggesting ANYTHING for ANYONES medical condition....especially someone you don't even know.

And I'd LOVE it if you would actually JOKE once in a while. I've posted with you for years and rare have seen you joke...and only when it's at someone else expense...someone you don't CARE for.

linduh, I know between the Alzheimers, your obvious lack of education, and your total obsession with me, you have trouble understanding the written word.

However, I never posted anything about not taking meds.

Just one more of a long list of lies.

may be I did not state this clearly-she has her medicine now.
What happens is that she started having high blood pressure and the doctor gave her a prescription which she cannot refill over the weekend because there is no one to take her to Walgreen. The van only runs on weekdays and her relative has her own problem and cant come and she lost my phone number.
So she was without her medication for a few days.
She has been through a lot -first her mother was ill so she was commuting between New Orleans and MISSISSIPPI town, then she had breast cancer, then comes Katrina and she became a refugee living in Seattle with her brother, then her sister here and finally found this home.
I remember she told me they have a nurse station with 2 nurses taking turn and she eats with others in the dining hall and there is a receptionist at the desk.
I think she is confused, she could have asked someone in the building for help.
Helen may be right, too much medication just makes a person more confused!
Come to think of it,is it a good idea to live among people in the same boat,no one can do anything when one needs help??
IF no one can drive and no one can walk far and every one is loaded with medication??

Pretty obvious that Helen was joking... but as you notice it was Linduh who first stepped in dog doo and dragged it into this thread.

I would recommend finding out if there is a case worker or manager there who manages her case. Often times they are referred to as "advocates" as well... something that you technically would be if you stepped in to help as well.

You will need her to release the facility to give you specific information about her, but they should be able to answer "general questions" without needing such a release. Also, she doesn't have to give a full release, she can restrist it to simple case management like researching and getting her the resources she needs. Once you locate the right person, find out what you can about their procedures for situations like this. What if she forgets about meds and there is no transportation, etc. There is a big difference between independent and assisted living, and it may be a thing of being in the right setting. The important thing is for someone, like yourself to step to the plate and get the right person to become her advocate and headed in the right direction. Good Luck.

good point, may be assisted living is more suitable for her now.
I called her and told her about Walgreen, she is more confused and said she does not want to get her medication thru the mail??
How things have changed in a few months!

I know you can't think beyond your own nose, kaira.

But you could DIE before I ever need a nursing home.

Now go seek your childish attention elsewhere. Your total immaturity is sickening seems to be all you can EVER offer anymore.

Just so you're aware...it was NOT my intent to take, what I believed were your SERIOUS concerns about your friend, off track.

The first few responses appeared sincere to me but when helen made her suggestion I felt it was unethical of her to do so, and said so.

I had no idea the 'tone' changed from one of sincere advice to you into some 'game playing', 'joking' routine.

From reading the profe's multiple posts I thought he was offering you more, well founded, advice. Not playing games with you....

Please accept my very sincere apology for taking the thread away from the liberals idea of 'joking' with you - or maybe making fun OF you.

I'm glad there are people like you who ARE concerned about others when they see a problem developing.
