linduh , you out and out lied .
linduh drools,"To even suggest someone who might need medication might be better off without it....when they don't even KNOW that persons personal medical circumstances....is BEYOND NUTS.
But yep, that's helen and mingo alright. "
linduh, I know between the Alzheimers, your obvious lack of education, and your total obsession with me, you have trouble understanding the written word.
However, I never posted anything about not taking meds.
Poor Mingo. Of course you didn't say that. Linda has a tendency to paint with a broad brush the figments of her muddled mind.
Hwahwa, yes, there is usually some truth in humor. In the case of the elderly being overmedicated I think there is no doubt. When we became aware of my mother in law's problem we found a basket filled with prescriptions, none of which she was able to manage safely. Her vision was impaired, her mind was impaired and she was there with a basket filled with dope. Her case is illustrative of many elderly people who have problems with vision and clear thinking. They may assume that more is better and take so many drugs that they may fall and break a hip.
On a lighter note, I overheard a funny story in the doctor's office. An elderly woman was telling the nurse that she had just dicovered that for the last several weeks she had been taking medicine prescribed for her husband. She said that it made her feel wonderful!

Many years ago when I was in Chicago, there is this doctor who used to practice medicine in Saudi Arabia.
He dispensed birth control pills to the women but they keep getting pregnant. He always asked if they were taking the pills and they always said 'Yes'.
It turns out that they took the pills home and showed it to their husband, the men concluded that something so modern,so nicely packaged and attractive and dispensed by someone so important such as a doctor, cant be for women!
SO they took the pills!!

Yesterday when I was in Asia City(instead of Chinatown,it is now called Asia City to reflect the various Asian groups plus the hispanic),a 90 years old Chinese man told me he and his wife live in a nursing home nearby ,he pays 250 a month for a 2 bedroom and a living room, utilities and lunch included.
He did not mention if there is a kitchen but he said breakfast and dinner are not provided by the home.
Once you wander away from mainstream America into the ethnic neighborhood, the prices of goods and services are much lower.
Of course I dont know what the home looks like and what amenities they provide,he is in good shape walking without a cane and still see well enough to buy those small figurines that you place in fish tank.

Helen, you are most likely right. Most ederly are way over-medicated.
Nor can they metabolize drugs as well as younger people can.
I know of a doctor upon becoming head of a nursing facility discontinued close to 75% of all meds given. All insulin diabetics excluded of course.

McJane, That's interesting! I recently read about a study in Psychiatric Times that confirms our suspicion and validates the action that the doctor made to alleviate the problem.
From that article..
Elderly individuals use prescription drugs approximately three times as frequently as the general population, and the use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications by this group is even more extensive. The estimated annual expenditure on prescription drugs by the elderly in the United States is $15 billion, a fourfold greater per capita expenditure on medications compared to younger individuals, making the elderly the largest consumers of legal drugs in the United States.
...... Medication misuse and/or substance abuse is a complex problem among elderly populations. The disproportionately greater exposure to medications by the elderly, coupled with age-related physiological changes and problems related to medication compliance, places this population at great risk for adverse events. As life expectancy is extended, there may be increased morbidity associated with chronic diseases that may lead to increased use and abuse of prescription and OTC medications.
On my way to the grocery store last week, I noticed a driver weaving from one side of a three lane road to the other. After several near misses he finally turned into Leisure World, a retirement community. I followed and told the guard at the gate that the fellow who just when through was drunk. He replied nonchalantly, "Oh, they come through here all day long like that!"
Needless to say, I've changed the direction of my travels.

hwahwa:
Although even fully competent people of all ages can run out of their meds, emptying a script without refilling can be an indication the your friend may no longer be a good candidate for independent living.
Most people with long term prescribed meds have a routine set (ie they refill their meds on the first of the month, etc). It is possible that she 'forgot' her routine or had extra/too few pills left and it knocked her off schedule (she may not be properly taking the script).
or she may have just spaced out on the refills.
something to look into, though!
You're a good friend

Thanks.
Besides the slow down in metabolism, also the stomach produces less stomach acid to digest food and gradual loss of brain cells.
It seems to hit the woman sooner than man.
She lost the business card I gave her but she remembers I promised to take her to COSTCO and she is pissed !
I dont think I will take her to Costco now that she seems confused and cant walk that much,COSTCO is just one big warehouse with lots of people and you have to like walking!
She may have to move to assisted living soon!

Several years ago someone posted the following opinion on excessive reliance on drugs.
Throwing drugs at people is easy, but I think what most people need is a steady diet of love, understanding, and respect, plus a healthy lifestyle. Legal doping is easier, but it's a brainchem tweak whose workings and effects aren't fully understood. IMO, it should be a last resort, not the first.

a steady diet of love and attention and healthy lifestyle, hard to achieve these days when your kids are far away and too busy with their own life.
I think oldies and sick ones are doped up so they dont demand much attention.
I have acid reflux and if you listen to all the commercials and articles and doctors ,we should all be taking that purple pill or prevacid or prilosec or protonic or any OTC such as zantac, pepto bismal ,mylanta etc.
But all these can make things worse and have side effects, today I take nothing,I just watch what I eat and my acid reflux problem is improving,no thanks to all those medication,I save a lot of money too.
Where is Logansdad,he spent 400 a month on those pills??

I see you were at the gas station shopping for clothes again , linduh!
To others, ya know , you're taking linduh waaaaay too seriously...the woman's a buffoon..you've all read her posts..do any of you take them seriously ???
They're ridiculous..so relax...enjoy the show ...laugh at the clown....I for one will not ignore her...and I WILL laugh at her!
Think of it as an act of random kindness....it's her only contact with humans..she gets pleasure from being abused and humiliated so you're just giving her a lift!!!
For example, whenever you see the old maidish TSK TSK TSK..picture a brain-squeezing girdle being tugged into place over a "robust" rear .....it's funny ! Lighten up!!!!
What are ya all a bunch of conservatives ???

I consider that last sentence to be an insult...a nasty suggestion that I be boycotted and comparing me to linduh.
THEN Helen keeps posting, blaming ME for linduh's posts!!!!!! We have had this conversation BEFORE and I am tired of defending myself, PROVING THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO REPLIES to linduh's posts but that is not good enough for Helen.
Helen, please....speak to your doctor....schedule that
BUTT-Ectomy...
and have them remove that bug that's up your ass
