Senators to Investigate Possible Gonzales Perjury
During testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales may have perjured himself while answering questions regarding the infamous visit in 2004 to the sick bed of then-AG John Ashcroft;
During Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) round of questioning, Gonzales appeared to revert back to his earlier acknowledgement that the standoff with Ashcroft had occurred over the NSA program. That wiretapping was brought under court supervision by the administration last year, though President Bush has reserved the right to restart it.
“You can’t tell me that you went up to see Mr. Comey for any other reason other than to reverse his decision about the terrorist surveillance program,” Feinstein said.
“OK, you are right,” Gonzales acknowledged, arguing that “we were confronting extraordinary circumstances where we had been advised that something that the department had authorized for two years, they would no longer continue to approve.”
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) pressed Gonzales further, setting off promises from several senators, including Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), to examine the public record for evidence that Gonzales perjured himself before Congress.
“This is serious, because it looks like you’ve deceived us,” Schumer told Gonzales.
It would actually be nice if Gonzales was finally caught crossing the line. His shifting explanations, obvious loyalty not to the rule of law but to Bush, and the overall pall the situation has cast over the American criminal justice system is reason enough he should be forcibly removed, if neither he nor Bush are man enough to do the right thing and offer the AG's resignation.
UPDATE: Roll Call is reporting that the AG may have put himself in "legal jeopardy" yesterday;
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales may have put himself in legal jeopardy with his testimony Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senators of both parties warned, as Members cast doubt on the truthfulness of his answers and suggested he may have improperly released classified information in his own defense.
UPDATE YET AGAIN: Here's a tasty morsel from Raw Story;
Another "gang member," Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), when asked if he believed Gonzales had perjured himself, responded, "Based upon what I know about it, I'd have to say yes."

Just the latest demo witch hunt against the Bush admin. Anything to draw attention away from inaction and lack of success in the demo majority House & Senate.

Only because they can't GRASP much of anything said.
Maybe IF any liberals REALLY want to become informed....they might read or listen to Charles Krauthammer's statements about why some idiots THINK he lied when he didn't.
It's THEIR own confusion....no one lied.
Another 'throw the #*!@' and hope it sticks bunch of garbage from the liberals. LOL and this isn't going to 'stick' either. Because it's NONSENSE.
DESPERATE appears to be the radical left's position....and I sure don't see it getting any better as the election approaches. LOL LOL

Linda said: "Nope.....no one lied"
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- FBI Director Robert Mueller told Congress Thursday that the confrontation between then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales and then-Attorney General John Ashcroft in Ashcroft's hospital room in 2004 concerned a controversial surveillance program -- an apparent contradiction of Senate testimony given Tuesday by Gonzales.
Mueller said he spoke with Ashcroft soon after Gonzales left the hospital and was told the meeting dealt with "an NSA [National Security Agency] program that has been much discussed, yes."
Mueller made the comment as he testified before the House Judiciary Committee.
In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, Gonzales, now attorney general, said he had visited the ailing Ashcroft in the hospital to discuss "other intelligence activities," not the surveillance program.

I get it. And..when a Republican is caught lying, it is a witch hunt, but when a Democrat is caught lying---burn 'em at the stake!
No one lied. No one lied. They were talking about TWO DIFFERENT times/events.
LOL
IF only the left would EVER read anything except the liberal garbage they MIGHT actually become aware of somethings.
But even when a source is provided....a reference is given they're too LAZY to actually check it out...so they continue repeating the ignorant statements over and over again.
tsk tsk tsk And THAT'S why they vote the way they do. Like sheep they just follow along with whatever they're told. LOL NEVER verify anything for themselves to LEARN what really happened. So much easier to be lazy and just believe anything. tsk tsk tsk
Sad to see how VERY uninformed they can be.

Linda---Why would Charles Krauthammer's opinion be any more accurate or carry any more weight than CNN, Hardball or Meet the Press. It has been reported by many news venues that Gonzalez and Mueller gave different accounts of the subject of the meeting in the hospital with Ashcroft.

LOL....because he doesn't have a 'dog' in this fight. Because HE could see that two DIFFERENT issues were being discussed and TWO totally different time frames were involved.
Because he's intelligent and NOT on a 5-6 year long witch hunt TRYING, desperately to find anything they can against this administration/now directed towards Gonzales like THEY are.
Because so far, rather than taking care of the Nations business, all the dems/liberals have done is spend all their time with these tons of 'investigative' committees....that have found NOTHING....nor will they. They need to 'get a head to put on a stick in front of the voters'....lol....and so far they've come up empty handed. tsk tsk.
Time will prove that. But watching their poll numbers drop....I'm kind of glad the idiots continue down this path. It proves to the voters the dem party is more interested in 'getting' the administration that doing their jobs. And they ARE clearly seeing that - they're seeing the DESPERATION from the left. And, imo, that's a good thing. Show them to be the incompetents they are.
The dems aren't going to stop with this witch hunt...and meanwhile more of our really important National business remains undone....under their leadership.

Article published Jul 29, 200Democrats accused of sandbagging Gonzales
July 29, 2007
By Jon Ward - White House officials accused senators of asking Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales questions about a program they knew he could not address in public, in order to justify their calls for an investigation by a special prosecutor.
"You've got an interesting situation when members of Congress, knowing that somebody is constrained by matters of classification, they can ask very broad questions ... they know the person sitting on the other side cannot answer thoroughly in an open session," White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
"You can create any kind of perception you want, by saying, well, can't you finish the answer, or why don't you tell us this, or why don't you tell us that, knowing perfectly well that there are very real constraints there," Mr. Snow said.
His comments were aimed at a group of senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee who grilled Mr. Gonzales for several hours Tuesday about the Bush administration's terrorist-surveillance program.
Senators accused Mr. Gonzales of contradicting past statements and of misleading them about whether there was disagreement within the administration over the program.
On Thursday, four Democratic senators — Charles E. Schumer of New York, Dianne Feinstein of California, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island — called on Solicitor General Paul D. Clement to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate whether Mr. Gonzales gave false testimony.
That same day, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III testified before a House panel, and Democrats said his testimony contradicted Mr. Gonzales'.
White House officials pushed back on Friday, saying that Mr. Mueller's testimony did not contradict the attorney general's, and saying that Mr. Gonzales has told the truth.
"It is clear that there are a lot of members of Congress who don't like his performance, but the president supports him and the president supports his performance," Mr. Snow said.
But he threaded the same needle that Mr. Gonzales has in refusing to say which intelligence activities were the subject of disagreement in 2004.
"There's a possibility that there were broader discussions, and I'm not going to get into the context of those," Mr. Snow said. "[There] could be some controversies about other intelligence activities."
Mr. Gonzales said there was no disagreement about the domestic eavesdropping program, which was disclosed by President Bush in December 2005. That would mean there was some debate about other intelligence-gathering activities in 2004.
Mr. Snow said government officials "simply cannot give a full and complete answer, because to do so would compromise American security."
But Mr. Schumer said the Bush administration was raising a false alarm.
"They're afraid of the truth. They could easily discuss the program without disclosing its details," he said.
The ranking Republican on the committee, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, also asked numerous questions of Mr. Gonzales about disagreement within the Bush administration over domestic-surveillance activities.
Mr. Specter, however, castigated Mr. Schumer and other Democrats who joined the call for a special prosecutor.
"Senator Schumer has made a practice of politicizing this matter," Mr. Specter said.
"While the democratic party complains about everything THIS President does to protect our Nation": "What would a Democrat president have done at that point?"
"Apparently, the answer is: Sit back and wait for the next terrorist attack."

You are kidding, right? He doesn't have a dog in this fight? He is a conservative, op-ed writer and views the issues in that light. He is no more intelligent than any of the reporters/hosts on the news programs I mentioned. The difference is Krauthammer gave his opinions, while the news programs I saw, presented facts and/or interviews--not opinions. Perhaps you feel he is so intelligent and sees what no one else sees because you agree with him politically? Nah. That couldn't be.
Speaking of witch hunts--the fact that Congress is holding hearings in which the Attorney General, the highest law officer in the land, perjured himself not once, but several times, regarding possible security matters and constititonal violations, is called a witch hunt by neocons. Clinton, because he lied to cover up a BJ in the Oval Office--something that did not affect this country one iota, but was embarrassing to him (as it should have been) was impeached, much to the joy of all neocons. What screwed up priorities! What a bunch of hypocrits.

You have to remember the intelligence of the person who thisng Krauthammer is intelligent. You know the one that insists the language of Canada is Canadian even after being proved wrong over ten times. The one that doesn't know the difference between Canada and England.
Absolute faith has been shown, consistently, to breed intolerance. And intolerance, history teaches us, again and again, begets violence.
---------------------------------- The duty of a patriot in this time and place is to ask questions, to demand answers, to understand where our nation is headed and why. If the answers you get do not suit you, or if they frighten you, or if they anger you, it is your duty as a patriot to dissent. Freedom does not begin with blind acceptance and with a flag. Freedom begins when you say 'No.'
Again, Charles is an INTELLIGENT writer, his articles appear in the WA PO. And he is a commentator [sometimes] on Fox News.
Why? Because he's INTELLIGENT. Not another ignorant liberal who stirs up the crap and has NO IDEA what they're talking about. They just want to try and throw anything and see if it sticks. 99.9% of what they've thrown as not stuck. One would THINK some by learn by that. LOL
For the past SIX MONTHS our AG has not been able to do his job for our Nation because the dems/liberals have been on a witch hunt to TRY and find anything they can. NOTHING has stuck....but they continue waisting our taxpayer dollars HOPING something will.
This isn't going to 'stick' either. Mark my words.
------------------
"Specter noted that he had not yet been fully briefed on spy programs and thus could not determine whether it was true, as the White House has asserted, that the hospital dispute did not center on the surveillance program but a separate facet that remains classified."
"New York Times, citing anonymous government officials it declined to name, reported Sunday that the 2004 dispute was over computer searches through massive electronic databases, which contain records of phone calls and e-mail messages of millions of Americans."
"If the dispute chiefly involved data mining rather than eavesdropping, that raised the question as to whether Gonzales might be technically correct, according to the Times."
AS Charles Krauthammer has so kindly TRIED to point out to the ignorant ones. Now they're beginning to 'get' it.
Slow....but FINALLY they're beginning to realize he was referring to TWO different issues....TWO different statements. Liberals are slow to grasp much of anything, IF they ever do. tsk tsk tsk

And also, as noted here, the Times finally 'getting' it. lol

Just the fact that you would write a ridiculous statement like the above, shows that you are not credible. Charles Krauthammer is intelligent, but he is conservative. THAT is why he is sometimes on Fox Opinion (I will not call it news because it isn't.) So you are saying he is intelligent and all liberals are ignorant? I suspect that CK is intelligent enough to never make a stupid statement like that.

What I pointed out to you, CC, was hat CK had the ability to GRASP the issue in full.
While the dems were gonig hysterical once again....making a big deal about nothing.
HE was not like the ignorant dems/liberals who were just so sure Gonzales was lying. And trying to use it for political gain.
The dems/liberals were the ones confused....as is normal.
And after SIX MONTHS of this witch hunt against Gonzales....nothing has stuck.
There's a reason for that, lol...But it's all the left has to offer. MORE hearings/more investigations. LOL
I've read that so far they've brought about 600 investigations. LOL LOL
Maybe they'd better try doing the peoples business for a change. The voters ARE noticing they're doing exactly what they blamed this admin. for doing. Especially since their coming up emply handed.

In addition to FBI diredtor Mueller, Deputy Attorney General James Comey also tells a different story from Gonzalez.
"Gonzales' version conflicts with Comey's.
Gonzales said that he and Card had been urged by congressional leaders of both parties to take steps necessary to ensure that the unidentified intelligence program survive a looming deadline for its expiration. To do that, Gonzales said, he needed Ashcroft's permission.
At the time, Ashcroft was in an intensive care unit recovering from gall bladder surgery and Gonzales was Bush's White House legal counsel. Ashcroft had transferred the powers of his office to Deputy Attorney General James Comey.
"I was angry," Comey, testified in May, releasing details of the meeting for the first time. "I thought I had just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man who did not have the powers of the attorney general."

CC. You obviously haven't wanted to actually READ my posts.
The dems KNOW they were asking questions that couldn't fully be answered because they're classified. Still classified.
But then we know the left has little respect for classified materials/info.
They print it no matter how much it will hurt our war efforts, they STUFF it in their pants, put it under construction trucks and destroy it when it helps their political agenda.
As I've said....you WILL see, this will go NO WHERE like most of their other 600 witch hunts have.
==========
"For our view, this is pathetic," White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters.
"What you have right now is partisanship on Capitol Hill that quite often boils down to insults, insinuations, inquisitions and investigations rather than pursuing the normal business of trying to pass major pieces of legislation, such as appropriations bills, and to try to work in such a way as to demonstrate to the American people that Congress and the White House can work together."
Snow said this is part of a pattern of legislative abuse of oversight that includes "more than 300 executive branch investigations or inquiries; 400 requests for documents, interviews, or testimony; we've had more than 550 officials testify; we've had more than 600 oversight hearings; 87,000-plus hours spent responding to oversight requests; and 430,000 pages made available to Congress for oversight. That's pretty significant."
