Idaho Senator Arrested in Airport
Updated 1:48 AM ET August 28, 2007
By STEVE KARNOWSKI
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho pleaded guilty this month to misdemeanor disorderly conduct after being arrested at the Minneapolis airport.
A Hennepin County court docket showed Craig pleading guilty to the disorderly conduct charge Aug. 8, with the court dismissing a charge of gross misdemeanor interference to privacy.
The court docket said the Republican senator paid $575 in fines and fees. He was put on unsupervised probation for a year. A sentence of 10 days in the county workhouse was stayed.
Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, which first reported the case, said on its Web site Monday that Craig was arrested June 11 by a plainclothes officer investigating complaints of lewd conduct in a men's restroom at the airport.
Craig said in a statement issued by his office that he was not involved in any inappropriate conduct.
"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions," he said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."
Craig, 62, is married and in his third term in the Senate. He is up for re-election next year. He was a member of the House for 10 years before winning election to the Senate in 1990.
He has been one of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's top Senate supporters, serving as a Senate liaison for the campaign since February. As word spread of Craig's guilty plea, a Romney campaign spokesman, Matt Rhoades, said in a statement: "Senator Craig has stepped down from his role with the campaign. He did not want to be a distraction and we accept his decision."
Sidney Smith, a Craig aide in Boise, said Monday afternoon that the senator was "in the (Boise) area" but was declining to give interviews.
Minneapolis airport police declined to provide a copy of the arrest report after business hours Monday.
Roll Call, citing the report, said Sgt. Dave Karsnia made the arrest after an encounter in which he was seated in a stall next to a stall occupied by Craig. Karsnia described Craig tapping his foot, which Karsnia said he "recognized as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."
Roll Call quoted the Aug. 8 police report as saying that Craig had handed the arresting officer a business card that identified him as a member of the Senate.
"What do you think about that?" Craig is alleged to have said, according to the report.
Last fall, Craig called allegations from a gay-rights activist that he's had homosexual relationships "completely ridiculous."
Mike Rogers, who bills himself as a gay activist blogger, published the allegations on his Web site, http://www.blogactive.com, in October 2006.
Craig hasn't said if he plans to run for a fourth term in 2008. An announcement was expected this fall. His spokesman, Smith, was uncertain if Craig's guilty plea would affect his re-election plans.
"It's too early to talk about anything about that," Smith told The Associated Press.
J. Kirk Sullivan, chairman of the Idaho Republican Party, declined to comment on the situation, saying he was unaware of the nature of the charges against Craig.

Or does it ONLY matter to mingo/sybil when they're gay republicans??? LOL LOL LOL

Just another hypocrite. He's married with 3 children and 9 grandchildren. Will he now trot out his nodding little wifey in front of the media and announce he's found Jesus and then be cured in a week or so and he will no longer desire gay sex? Isn't that the routine?

Kind of hard for those hypocrites that support this gay lifestyle to get upset over him doing exactly what most gay men do/have done.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the gay lifestyle but somehow I do not believe that most gay men are married with children and hang out in washrooms looking for gay sex.
Sounds as if this is just another one of those 'family values' guys living a lie and trying to fool everyone - but he got caught.

and , as usual, YOU can't prove that I do. However, the REPUBLICAN in the OP sure DOES!!!

Now Linda is an expert of what gay men do. I know Linda keeps track of all the activities that gay men do. She must follow them around with her little notebook recording all their activities and who they sleep with. So Linda when was the last time you were in a men's bathroom keeping track of these activities. She must have picked up some tips on performing oral sex along the way.
Are you saying Larry Craig is gay? How can that be, he is married and has kids. Gay men can not marry so he can't be gay. So much for the sanctity of marriage. I guess cheating on your spouse is a tradition in straight marriages.
This guy is nothing but a hyprocrite. He "has voted against gay marriage and opposes extending special protections to gay and lesbian crime victims", but he engages is lewd conduct with other men. He is just another man repressing his real sexual desires.
Sounds as if this is just another one of those 'family values' guys living a lie and trying to fool everyone - but he got caught.
Couldn't agree with you more. How many Republicans that voted for "family values" have been caught in the same lie? This makes it three, four or five.

This is not very, very common activity among gay men. The vast majority of gay men do not do this. You are so misinformed about the gay lifestyle, but continue to talk as though you are an expert.
You do not get why these (Republican) cases are criticized. It is not because they are gay or Republican. It is because they preach against gay rights and the gay lifestyle and for family values. Then, when they think they are behind closed (men's room) doors, they behave in a manner that makes them HYPOCRITES.

Did anyone remember the movie 'Basketball diary' by Leonardo Dicaprio?
Kiara,
There are men out there who are married, have children and gay.
During the 80s there is this Swiss lady doctor married to a wealthy movie producer, she has seen enough AIDS cases in the New York hospital where she worked ,she convinced her husband to contribute a large sum of money to conduct research and make people aware of AIDS.
She was in Kansas city to make a speech and she spotted 2 gaymen at the back holding hands while she spoke.
Afterwards, she approached them and asked'where are the rest of you??"
And the answer is 'They cant come, they are married'.
A very nice lady, too bad I cant remember her name, she is Swiss.
I have worked with men who are gay, some are married and have sex with women (spouse and other women),some are single and lived with their lover.I befriended some, and one of them told me of the 'straight married men' sitting in a gay bar after work.

Neither logansdad NOR CC KNOW what I know. LOL LOL LOL Funny that they continually assume they do.
"I know Linda keeps track....."
You have NO idea what I 'keep track of; and what I don't. You're only assuming as you always do. And you're always wrong.
Most elderly gay men have married and even had families. Then years later they found a backbone and came out of their 'closet', as it's commonly referred to.
This is NOTHING unusual at all. VERY, very common....no matter how much CC denies it. lol
And anonymous sex, gay bath houses, public restrooms are often frequented by those same gay men seeking anonymous sex with other men.
Give me a break...and try to come out from your caves. This situation is no different than many. They're ashamed of their sexual cravings/behaviors, so they pretend to be 'normal' married men, living their lives as total LIES.... and they seek sexual relations all the time outside of their marriages. Just as they do when they're in so called 'committed' relationships with other gay men. They're a VERY promiscuous group. It's KNOWN FACT.....not my opinion. lol lol
So pretend what you must....after all you're liberals and liberals constantly live in DENIAL.

This is just too wonderful for words. This guy, an Idaho conservative, is undoubtedly also Mormon; it's hard to get elected to Congress in Idaho without that credential. He's a double hypocrit. What a jerk.
I know it's hard for Linda to get this, but we liberals won't fault someone for being gay; we DO fault him for being a hypocrit, speaking out against gay issues, proclaiming his pipeline to God, etc.
Couldn't happen to a nicer person.

It is easy to determine that you are misinformed about gays just by your posts, which are full of old wives tales and no facts at all.
"Most elderly gay men have married and even had families. Then years later they found a backbone and came out of their 'closet', as it's commonly referred to."
This is the closest you have come to being accurate on this subject. I would not say it was most elderly gay men, but a good portion have married and had families because, back in the day, it was nearly impossible for a gay person to come out. If they did, their businesses and personal lives were ruined. Today, it is possible to come out and have a good life because (many) people have educated themselves and realize there is room for all kinds of people in this world.
"This is NOTHING unusual at all. VERY, very common....no matter how much CC denies it. lol"
My mistake. I thought you were talking about picking up men in airport restrooms. THAT is not common.
"They're a VERY promiscuous group. It's KNOWN FACT.....not my opinion. lol lol"
Oh really? Where do you get your facts?
MYTHS ABOUT HOMOSEXUALS
It is a myth that gays necessarily display feminine qualities and that lesbians necessarily display masculine ones. In fact, the term homosexual designates one's choice of sex partner, not general masculinity or femininity.
It is a myth that homosexuals are likely to be child molesters. In fact, 95 percent of all reported cases of child sexual abuse are committed by heterosexual men.
It is a myth that AIDS is a homosexual disease. In fact, heterosexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is more common than homosexual transmission in Africa. In addition, heterosexual transmission is increasing more rapidly than homosexual transmission in the United States.
It is a myth that homosexuality is a mental illness. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of disorders in 1973.
It is a myth that all homosexuals are promiscuous (have many sex partners). In fact, many homosexuals are involved in long-term relationships with a single partner. Like heterosexuals, some homosexuals are promiscuous while others are not.
It is a myth that homosexuality is somehow "catching" and that a child can catch it from a teacher or other adult. In fact, there is absolutely no evidence that being around homosexuals has any effect on one's own sexual orientation.

Just like you know jack when it comes to the gay community or what gay men do. You are neither gay nor a man unless you have been lying to us all along.
Most elderly gay men have married and even had families. Then years later they found a backbone and came out of their 'closet', as it's commonly referred to.
This is true in some cases. However the fact remains that Larry Craig is not gay. He even said so himself. You are labeling him as gay when he identifies himself as straight. (I personally think he is fooling himself.)
There are many people both men and women who have had relations with people of the same sex. Does that make them "gay"? I personally know a few men that like to get oral sex from other men and they are married. However they still identify themselves as straight.
And anonymous sex, gay bath houses, public restrooms are often frequented by those same gay men seeking anonymous sex with other men.
You are assuming it us just gay men that do this. I guess you are forgetting about the straight married men that also engage in this behavior. Just goes to show you know jack about the gay community as I have said before.
Give me a break...and try to come out from your caves. This situation is no different than many. They're ashamed of their sexual cravings/behaviors, so they pretend to be 'normal' married men, living their lives as total LIES....
And why do you think that is Linda. Why do you think some people are ashamed of their cravings/behaviors and trying to pretend to be "normal" married men? It is because of the stigma that society has put on homosexuals. It is the stigma most conservatives and religious people keep telling people - that homosexuals are immoral and will burn in hell. It is people like you that are "forcing" people to "hide" who they really are and live in "shame". Until society changes its views of homosexuals or until homosexuals are treated as equals this will continue to hold true.
and they seek sexual relations all the time outside of their marriages. Just as they do when they're in so called 'committed' relationships with other gay men. They're a VERY promiscuous group. It's KNOWN FACT
So what. You can live your life the way you want to. You can live your marriage the way you want to. Why are you trying to force your views of marriage and relationships on other people. There are many straight relationships that are open. There are many straight swingers clubs. There are many straight relationships that invite a third over. You choose to ignore these facts.
And while some gay people choose to have open relationships, that is a decision those people have made. They do not need your approval to do what they chose to do.
So pretend what you must....after all you're liberals and liberals constantly live in DENIAL
No Linda it is you that are living in denial. You think you know what goes on in the gay community but you know Jack. You keep believing all the stereotypes as fact and that is all you want to believe. You dismiss the fact that what goes on in the gay community can also be found in straight relationships.

It has everything to do with ones political party when that person is constantly preaching "family values" and against gay rights when he is leading a double life. That is being a hypocrite Linda. You should have a good idea of what a hypocrite is since you are the biggest hypocrite on this board.
When the NJ governor was caught in the same type of situation did he try to deny it. No he came out as a "gay American". When was the last time you have seen a Republican in that type of situation admit the truth? You haven't. Instead they continue to lie and deny in order to save face.

Top 10 Larry Craig Excuses For Getting Arrested In A Minnesota Airport Toilet:
10) I wasn't playing footsy with that guy. I have Restless Leg Syndrome.
9) I was on a quest to find the Tidy Bowl Man.
8) I thought a glory hole might have something to do with the Patriot Act. You know, "glory, glory, hallelujah."
7) I wanted to buy tickets for a Vikings game, and the guy on Craig's List said to meet him in the toilet. I guess I clicked on the wrong category, huh? Damn you, Internet!
6) I was feeling the bottom of the stall because I left some bubblegum there the last time.
5) The Republicans are having their convention in Minneapolis next summer and I wanted to make sure the airport bathrooms are spic and span.
4) While at the airport bar I think some Democrat slipped Ecstasy in my drink when I wasn't looking.
3) I needed something to read while on the john, so I wanted to know if the fellow in the next stall had any magazines.
2) Bad diarrhea! I was so dehydrated that I got confused and didn't know who I was. I thought I was Mark Foley.
1) I was afraid I had walked into the ladies' room by mistake so to make sure I played footsy with the "lady" in the next stall - and it was a DUDE! I couldn't see the ankles.

You might try reading and learning for yourself about how they use public bathrooms to have sex all the time. Their bathhouses are used for the same. Then they also use other public facilities, JUST LIKE this one did...in an AIRPORT. When HIV/AIDS first broke out....it spread LIKE WILD FIRE through the gay community... BECAUSE they were having so much promiscuous sex. They're KNOWN for being much more sexually active than most other people. Try reading about how many sexual partners the AVERAGE gay guy has had in his/their lifetime. Average over 100...and they're PROUD of that. And the average straight person???? No where NEAR that many 'encounters' in their life times[/b].
You really need to come out of your denial and deal in the reality of their 'accepted' lifestyles. Read how they don't practice monogamy like most 'committed' people do.

He's still in denial. He's still in the closet. He can't FACE his own sexuality. A VERY common position for gay men. And it's been reported/suspected that he's been gay since back in the late '80s. READ....learn about other incidences he's been involved in - in his past.
He's gay. And I find it laughable that any liberal here is pointing out this 'arrest' ....and using it for political gain. HE, himself pled GUILTY to this charge. HE received a light sentence. GET REAL. He's not gay....lol lol lol. SURE, all men arrested in bathrooms for seeking sex with another man are REALLY straight men who also ADMIT to a crime and they're not gay either. LOL LOL How funny...and how typically liberal to say.
Shame on you. IF it's okay to be gay...then ones political party shouldn't matter. He's NOT the first gay man to be in 'hiding'...and he won't be the last. lol
And his votes that were against gays not marrying doesn't mean a thing. There are many gays that ALSO don't support gays marrying. Get real please.

When Jim McGreevey, another married man with a family, was outed.....the liberals played that up with him being the VICTIM. LOL Not the same standards applied when it's a Republican though. As we see here, in this thread.
They were both pretty much in the same situation....pretending to be straight, etc....but how the two cases are treated by the liberals is vastly different.
It's those darn double standards they have. LOL
Being gay is just that...no matter ones party.

And as an aside. We don't see the same promiscuity from lesbians that we do from gay men. They're in a 'class' all their own in that regard.

Nope not the same. The NJ governor pretended to be straight for a while. Eventually he admitted he was gay, came out and admitted it publicly. Larry Craig has and is continuing to deny who he is (if he is truly gay). He keeps having to lie which is only making things worse.
It's those darn double standards they have. LOL
The only double standards are those you seem to have. If I remember correctly, it was you Linda that ripped the NJ governor apart and went on to accuse him of possibly giving his wife a sexually transmitted disease because of his behavior. Where is all that talk about Larry Craig from you now? Is that because he is a Republican?

Linda. Instead of ignoring it,try READING the C & P in my previous post. YOU might learn something. I have spent most of the last 30 years helping to treat HIV patients, mostly gay. I was in a practice which treated patients with HIV since before we even knew what it was. I lost many friends, gay and straight, to this disease. My boss and I both retired a few years ago due to burnout. Don't you dare tell me to read up on gays or HIV. I have forgotten more than you will ever know about either subject. Try reading some scientific papers on gays or HIV instead of your conservative blogs. You have not presented any proof of even one supposed fact in your posts.
