Hey, sorry I rambled so much. I tend to do that. It's not so much that I'm pompous or presume to pontificate over everything, but probably more an insecurity or reinforcement. By hashing out a problem, especially writing it or relating to others, it really helps to straighten it out in my own mind.
Freyj, I realized after I wrote that that others, who actually DO buy a good amount of stuff on ebay, are probably already aware of what buyers are looking for in an auction. I rarely actually buy, so when I do this excercise, it is very enlightening to me. It would still help a seasoned trader find the right place to list something and determine what features helped them locate it.
Hi Toke!, I think thats what the #3 was for, I probably need to re-word it!
Shoshanah, sorry I defiled your name earlier!
Your relentless!! I will add pottery to those items that benefit from the gallery :~)

Hmmm, I think it CAN be "worth it" when it comes to items that have a great deal of "eye appeal." My specialty is vintage jewelry and a good Gallery photo can certainly draw more lookers.
I just think that it is difficult to prove empirically for a number of reasons. How many Gallery photos are just plain terrible, or appear as a little speck among a vast background, like so many distant city lights in the night sky? As a buyer, I am not enticed to click on those auctions unless the title is very appealing.
Secondly, there are so many OTHER factors -- particularly in Collectibles/Vintage -- that affect viewing, bidding . . . it can be difficult to know where to attribute success. Is it my use of Gallery, was it a catchy title, or is it that it's just one of those magical weeks? Or that the "right bidder" just happened to view that auction?
I am VERY skeptical of eBay's surveys that boast of increased activity with special-feature auctions. Doesn't it stand to reason that if a seller uses a special feature, that item might be special to begin with? Naturally the better items are going to have more success overall than Granny's 50 cent earbobs, I don't care how you dress them up. And I am not sure how one might go about conducting a more controlled study.

When I was young and foolish (2 years ago..Now I'm old and wise ), I would use the bold feature...But since discovering the Personal Gallery, I do not need any other extra features, as potential customer can view all my gallery with just one link in my listing...So, that .25c is going a long way, for me, anyway. I do agree that it probably works best for specialized merchandise...Someone customer with already an idea of what s/he is looking for in Jewelry, Art Glass, Pottery, Paper Memorabilia and such, will zero-in quickly using the Gallery, without having to wait for pages of listings to open; the Gallery picture will send the signal that the customer will or will not wish to continue.
