and why don't you use it to store your pictures?

I know that FTP and templates can seem overwhelming, but it's not really that difficult. Those who list hundreds each month, I can understand why you may not want to go that route, but what about you other small or occasional sellers?

I can't afford to give up one more cent. At first thought, I would have paid a nickel per picture, but the more I've thought about it, the more I see I can't do even that.

So, it is quanity that keeps you from using your web space? Is it fear because it is new and unknown? I'm really not being smart here, just curious.

Many keep asking where the free sites are, but if this is a sign of the times, the free ones are going bye bye. Why get settled in somewhere else, then in a few months have to switch again? Wouldn't it be better to figure out how to manage it on your own and not be dependent on anyone else?

Meya, I have some small amount of space with my server, but it is strictly for personal use...no commercial.

I know how dumb this may sound, but is there any way I can send pics straight to eBay from my computer without going through a host?

gc2: You can use eBay's photo hosting - two pictures per auction free, and the images are transferred directly from your computer to their space.

I have plenty of space to host all the pictures I need on my ISP webspace. Basically I have been lazy. I used to keep all my images there, I know FTP (nothing really to know!) I know HTML ( I rarely use anything other that a few basics).

I am lazy--but not so lazy that I will pay someone else to do it for me.

The feature I liked was being able to schedule launch times. I am here so there is no reason I can't launch those auctions myself and be certain that they DO launch.

This stuff is not rocket science--I am an old grandparent and I learned--so can all of you.

eBays pic hosting works that way, but they don't store them. If you relist you have to "send" it again. I'm not sure how long theirs will be free.

Most ISP's do say "personal" use, but they base that on how many hits your site gets. For a small seller, too many hits wouldn't be a problem.

Yes, eBay will host up to two pictures for free. I know you do this through their listing web page.

I am not sure if the Mr.Lister program will do this for you since I have not used it before.

Thanks,
Sun W.

This is East Texas....

My server also gives me an email account that I have never activated...just in case I should get/send an email that I didn't want five counties to know the details of.

I could tell you things you wouldn't believe.....

(Hotmail may get hacked, but they'll never gossip!!!)

My ISP only allows 2 MB which isn't enough for me for the amount of auctions that I run and the only way to buy more space is to jump to the next web hosting plan which is something like 24.95 a month. Too steep for me. I have a ADSL line and I really don't want to switch to cable since the cable networks are slower at night than my ADSL line is. I don't mind paying a small fee for image hosting but I expect to pay a flat price. I won't even pay the .05 per listing as I list too many auctions.

The last update of MisterLister includes an auto upload feature for your images. You click on the button and browse your hard drive for the images.

It seems that MisterLister uses a different server and method for starting auctions than the "Sell Your Item" does. I have seen times when you could not use the "Sell Your Item" page, but auctions I had uploaded during the day with MrLister lauched fine when I activated them.

I've always FTP'd my images to my web space (I only used AW once in December, for eBay's free listing day, because I could prepare listings in advance).

I have 10 MB of web space free with my ISP account. I have also been using ICOM to host my web site. ICOM charges $8.25/month for 50 MB of web space.

Meya I have 10M worth of space on our ISP and I believe 10M on the Netscape site as well. I'm giving it a try this week and attempting a basic HTML template for listing with Mr. Lister for the sake of simplicity. Also, toying with FTP for uploads of images. Of course this should have been done 3 years ago. Thanks for the push!

http://www.ehost.com/hosting

$13 a month for 250 megs.
$20 a month for 500 megs.

I'm thinking of going with them for hosting pictures. If they offered unlimited FTP accounts, we should an account amongst ourselves.

Also, check out http://hypermart.net Free 50 Megs for business web pages.

I didn't know about the web space at Netscape. Can you post a link to it, or is easy to find?

Oh, and I have 5 mb of space to use at my isp, I just don't know anything about ftp. I guess I can learn though if I have to!

FTP is really easy. You can get a free FTP program such as WS_FTP at pretty much any download site. The hardest part is getting it set up at the start, and I'm sure your ISP would help you do that.

I've never used any online auction management service, I have a hard enough time with eBay outages, I don't need the added problems of my pics not showing up, auctions not launching, etc. if the management site has problems. And I'm SURE AS HECK not going to PAY for that!

Most ISP's should have the information you need to get started on the Help portion of their web site. They should even have information on how to go about getting started with putting up your own web page, which is sort of what you'll be doing when you use them for storage.

When I started mine yesterday with Road Runner, they emailed me the settings etc. that I needed to use in order to configure WS_FTP correctly. From start to finish, I had the FTP program up, running, and connected in about 15 minutes.

It's like signing up most places, you need to remember the name and password you use etc. There are other settings, such as Host Server name or FTP server name that your ISP will provide.

Don't let it overwhelm you, it's not that difficult.

I really understand the fear of the unknown. And, for the most part, I think that's what is keeping people from learning how to use FTP and HTML.

But, trust me, folks, if this mature woman was able to learn it, then you can, too. Even the Internet was new to me at the time.

I hired a young computer geek several years ago to set me up and teach me. He was worth every penney. If you are really serious, then you just might have to spend money to make money.

I took notes and ran a tape recorder, just in case. Never did have to go back to my tape recorder. And, yes, I was overwhelmed the first time on my own, but it clicked because it is so logical.

As to HTML...I bought a book, but didn't use it. I learned everything I needed to know, initially on the Q&A Board, and then right here from the posters on AW.

I made templates in WordPad, changing just the necessary information for the item being sold.

I have an extremely reliable local ISP. There was only one time when they were down and my pictures weren't showing. But, that was only for a few hours.

So, if you want to preserve your bottom line, look into it; you just have to be willing to make the effort.

I just know some of you boys and girls are smart enough to learn it all on your own.

I use FTP-Le it is the only one I could use with my ISP. I've been using it for 2 1/2 years never a problem. So easy to use. I have 5MB of space on my ISP. I have over 200 photos there right now. And still have 1.5MB of space.

HTML is simple once you start playing around you will wonder why you would use the same boring program every time. Word pad will save this for you. All you have to do is fill in the blanks, something you have to do anyway. Want to see how somebody else does it check the souce code.

After you learn to use FTP send a index.htm to your 5MB and you got the making of a web site.

A word of caution some of these web publishing programs leave a port open. It is best not to use the one that came with your computer if so equipped. This is a hackers dream, a back door that needs to be closed.

My computer is now part of a LAN with my fiance's computer - so I'm going to have my own server space to store my picture at. 8) I just have to figure out how to add them and I'll have 100% control over my pictures at no fee (well, no extra fee beyond the regular fees to have the internet access and network stuff, but that'd be there anyway.)

Next stop - learning HTML enough to form my own templates.

Hi,
I just checked mine out (Compuserve) apparently they allow 20 megs per screen name and you can have up to 7 (I think). They allow you to make your own page and business is one of the choices. Allows links to your favorite businesses (your auctions) sounds pretty neat. I pay 19.95 a monthe for unlimited usage for my ISP, as far as I can remember they have not been down in the last three years? I'll test it out this weekend. I brought up one picture with a browse button provided just like the one on AW, it was too big but very clear so I'll have to explore some more.

For Êmarlenedz and others with DSL connections...
If your ISP has assigned you a static IP address, you can serve up your own pictures from your computer's hard drive...

The best way is to take an old computer and form a small LAN with your present one and use the old one to run firewall software and serve up the pix......or use just the main computer if you don't have sensitive information on it....with DSL and a static IP, you are more prone to being hacked....

The pic URL's would have your IP address followed by the pathname of the pic...
Say, like....http://194.63.525.45/Êmarlenedz/images/auction01.jpg....

I have run up against ISP TOS on this issue in the past with Earthlink...they attempted to charge me bandwidth charges for excess traffic on my web site but I disputed their charge and requested the ISP bandwidth logs to support their claim....they never responded and credited my CC...

Personally, I've never thought twice about uploading auction pix to my web site and, other than the one incident with Earthlink, I've had no problems...
But, I am a small time seller...

YMMV...

Pat

Here's a place to go for space.

www.hypermart.com

Sign up with them and they'll give you space for a webstire (50 meg). If you don't want to get your own url (www.xxxxx.com) they'll assign you to www.hypermart.net/xxxxxx .

Do a search for free FTP software and set it up to load your pictures to hypermart.

Now you'll have free picture hosting.

Now go out and buy a bulk lister (Or use eBay's Mr Lister) and you're all set!

For those of you using WordPad, I highly recommend a switch to NoteTab (http://www.notetab.com). There is a freeware version of the software available for download. I've been using it for two years.

I save various auction templates or paragraphs of text, by giving each a name and saving in a "clip library". This list of clips appears in a small window on the left of the main screen. When I am creating a new auction, I simply click on the appropriate "name" and drag it to the main window. The text or template description magically appears in full.

Many html files can be loaded at once, each appearing as a tab at the top of the main screen. I love the global search and replace. When I was changing my shipping terms or the url where my image files were stored, I would load over a hundred auction description files in memory at once, and then do a global "search and replace" to change the relevant section of the description in ALL the files loaded in one single action. In a few seconds, all the files were updated and saved.

Irene - that looks like a great little program, I'm downloading it now! If it's as good as it looks I may end up registering for the Pro version and getting rid of the bloated HTML editor I use now. Thanks!

Has anyone used 50megs.com?

They have different options according to what you want. One of the options is 50 megs of web space at no charge with their banner ad on it.

Just wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with them.
