Thanks for the info on the width restriction. It's too bad for your name registration. When you signed up at the fat cow, did they bill you the $99 in one large payment for the year or do they bill month per month?

Here's another small tip to have pics load faster. Every time a host name is entered in the browser it will connect to a dns server to determine the IP number of the site. These servers can become very busy at times and will slow down the connection time. This is not to be mistaken by the download time of the pics. Most times, I have to wait a couple of seconds for the dns server to respond while pics load almost instantly once connected to a site on my modem. It's faster to use the IP number in a pic's address or link to avoid the bottlenecks of the dns servers.

for example a link for the AW logo could be
http://www.auctionwatch.com/img/header/logo/logo_top.gif
or
http://64.14.24.14/img/header/logo/logo_top.gif

AC

The Cow gave me an IP number while my domain name was going through the proper channels.
After reading your info, I may have to keep all my pics on the IP addy. I never thought about the load time, thanks for the tip!

BTW - My wife was tickled pink to see her first name with a .com after it, so it all worked out for the best. Lucky for her she has a rather unusual first name.

It should only make a slight difference during heavy traffic times, if any at all. My ISP had a dns server overload a few weeks ago and I couldn't surf for a few hours, but people that had the IP's of the site they wanted could.

I'll have to use something like photo point. My ISP's web site is getting full and I don't sell enough (only part time) to justify that much money to my wife. Mine was available in the .net and .org domains.

I tried a snipe post in the snipe thread, missed it by a second. You are the king of sniping.

Does Netscape have an FTP to upload images to? If so, are there any problems related with using them? Which is preferred for HTML, Nestcape, IE, Frontpage or Netscape Composer?

Thanks, I'm jumping in late.

digitalman: I have a 50 megs.com account. Found out the hard way that you cannot link to your auctions through them. According to their CS person it is one of the limitations they have put on the accounts.

Wow -- thanks EVERYone for all this fab info and all those terrific URLs. Shhh, don't tell AW, but they could probably charge for their discussion forum.

(Just kidding -- but really, it's been THAT helpful to me!)

reddeer--the only problem with using the same image for a thumbnail and changing the width for the smaller version is that you have not changed the load time -- both pictures will be exactly the same byte size even though the width command will make the picture appear smaller.

In other words, it's a cosmetic change only and does nothing to affect the actual "size" (byte-wise) of the picture in question.

For example, I just tested a picture I had uploaded -- the original size is 481x386 pixels, the byte size is 34 KB. I change the width to "200" for display purposes -- the pixel width shows as 250x188 pixels, the byte size is STILL 34 KB.

Same picture -- same loading time. In order to make an effective thumbnail I have to resize the picture at source so that the KB size is affected.

Hello guys. I recently ran across three neat programs to help create your auction page and they're FREE. The first two automatically make thumbnails and provide the HTML code for linking to the larger photo.
http://www.sover.net/~whoi/Graphics.html scroll down the page and look for THODOR
http://www.sover.net/~whoi/WhutzNuAug00.html IMAGE WIZARD

This last one is really handy for anyone who doesn't want to mess with making tables because it does it for you.
http://www.bagism.com/tablemaker/ This is the online version but they also have one you can download called TABLEMAKER APPLICATION.

All of these programs are free and very small in size.

Oh sure Blanche, NOW you tell me there's an easier way.

Engels ....... Yes, so I discovered a few days ago, but thanks!

And for anyone else wanting to do it the old fashioned way, here's the correct code for "click to enlarge pics"

Off to go edit my post above .......

Hey reddeer, I didn't realize that you were an "old fashioned" kind of a guy.

My FAVORITES file is literally flowing out of my computer and onto the floor. I found a great free program last night that checks your bookmarks folder for dead links. I knew I probably had quite a few dead links but the thought of manually going through 1003 URL's just didn't appeal to me so I was very pleased to find this program AND to have a somewhat lighter FAVORITES file.

Anyway, here's another neat site from my bloated FAVORITES file that has lots of tools but the best things are the free homepage web template kits called PAGEKITS. There are 28 to choose from and the kit includes the HTML and graphics needed for the page. If anyone wants to throw up a home page quickly this would be ideal. All you need to do is change the photos, etc. to fit your needs. http://www.elated.com/

Blanche (who is now another URL lighter)

edited to add the URL that I forgot to include

Hi corrdogg. I'm sorry I didn't get back here sooner. You're more than welcome to any of my bookmarks. I need all the help I can get to reduce the size of my Favorites file.

Here's the URL http://www.lockergnome.com/issues/win95nt/20010106.html Scroll down the page and look for AM-DEADLINK

Thank you Blanche.

I have been a Lockergnome subscriber for around 3 years, but I must have missed that one.

Actually, I believe that Chris Pirillo (the “Lockergnome”) is partially responsible for many of my 1000+ bookmarks. He really does a fantastic job of searching out great applications and tips.

I was able to delete 12 dead links (Gosh, I must have been doing a good job keeping up with them) and get rid of a bunch of duplicates. Now I can snyc to my laptop and be all set!

Thank you Blanche!

Well, this is mortifying. I downloaded Deadlinks...it looks simple...but I can't figure out how to get my bookmarks in...shows I have 0 bookmarks. That's a laugh.

I selected Netscape...nothing happens. Then I get a prompt to open a file...what file do they want??? Duh.

toke:

I am running IE 5.50.4, but in DeadLink Options, do you have “Use Internal preview” checked?

Once I selected my browser (IE) DeadLinks found all my bookmarks automatically. If this doesn’t work just try shutting it down and re-open it and try again.

Thanks,corrdogg.

I don't have "use internal preview" in my options. I downloaded 1.1.

I've shut it down...reopened...nada. Very weird. I'll bet I'm screwing up something very simple and basic. @$%#&!

Toke

I had to chuckle when I read your post, I thought it was just me last night?

With Netscape, it's not quite as straightforward as IE. It was late, and I'll be damned if I can remember exactly how I did it, but when you initially set the program up, you have to go through these Netscape steps in order to bring up your bookmark.htm folder in the Deadlink program.

1. Program Files
2. Netscape
3. Users
4. Bookmark

I just can't remember which button I used on Deadlink to get me started? Maybe after some more coffee I'll recall exactly what I did?

LOL! GoBack is the finest investment in programs I've made. Can you tell how much I need it?

The best part has been the courage it's given me to try things. It's wonderful.

Ooops, sorry Toke, I wasn't trying to imply anything.

I picked Goback up a few months back, and every once in awhile, when I really manage to screw something up, it's saved my keester.

And yes, I too am now much braver now that I know I can instantly undo any major SNAFU's I cause.

I would like to thank everyone on this thread for the AMAZING advice, and support given on this thread! Last weekend I set my own Image Hosting up (for FREE!) I already have my own domain name and web space, but to make things simple, I chose to sign up for a free site. (Hypermart.com) THANK YOU!

I do have a question about the Index.html file. When I make the file and upload it, it goes automatically into the "main" page. I also do not have an "image" file, they automatically uploaded to the main page also. Does anyone know how I can create different files to organize the photos? I would also like to do this so that I can get the URL's directly from my hosting site, rather than go through Site Manager. I'm using CoffeCup Expresso FTP right now but I also have FTP Express ready to use.

Edited Cause GEESH where's the spell checker on this thing!!!!
