Whew! I just tried it, and my Claw lineage was quite a twisted path.

13 clicks: I hit a feeback loop.
Moved up one.
Four clicks to a feedback loop.
Moved up one.
One click to a feedback loop.
Moved up one.
Five clicks to a feedback loop.
Moved up one.
Two clicks. DEAD END; zero feedback user.
Went back.
Moved up one to an immediate feedback loop.
Moved up another.
One click to a feedback loop.
Moved up one.
Three clicks. Feedback loop and DEAD END.
Went back.
Moved up one.
Two clicks to a feedback loop.
Moved up one to an immediate feedback loop.
Moved up another.
Six clicks to a feedback loop.
Moved up one.
One click to a feedback loop -- but it was the "Thanks Mork" feedback.
Moved up one... getting warmer...
One click to The Claw!

So, I think I'm a 40th generation descendant of The Claw, twelve times removed.

Running this, I went from

10/98 (my sign on and first received FB) to
08/98 (the first FB of the first person I received FB from) and discovered that I was the 16th FB of that seller, who is still active and has racked up almost 1200 FBs. His first FB came from someone whose first FB was from
10/96, then on to
11/96
08/96
08/96
06/96
06/96
05/96
03/13/96 "GOOD BUSINESSMAN! Got what I paid for. Quick reply to Questions. HI Marks!"
From there it bounces back up to 05/96 and enters a three- or four-stage loop. (Someone evidently did not leave FB for another party, but bid on something else that had an indirect connection eventually leading back to the same one(s). )

No "Claw," at least not in the direct "lineage."

I think there is a whole branch of mathematics dealing with the analysis of such patterns, but the name of that mathematics (if I'm even thinking of the right thing) eludes me (topology perhaps? ).

----
What's being done in the name of direct marketing nowadays is crazy.
The above are all just my opinions, except where I cite facts as such.
Oh, I am not dc9a320 anywhere except AW. Any others are not me.
Is eBay is changing from a world bazaar into a bizarre world?

This is TOTALLY cool! I got back to the "claw" in 9 clicks! Gboy, this was a really imaginitive experiment. Since so many of us got the same original feedback, it seems pretty evident that this was, indeed, the first feedback left on eBay.

Lol, 2 minutes of going back through feedback and I find the infamous:

I having received a damaged order, "claw" replaced it at his expense.

User: * (180) Date: Feb-28-96 10:50:38 PST
Praise: I having received a damaged order, "claw" replaced it at his expense.

mcbrunnhilde,

A few hours ago I posted that I found this feedback...

User: xxxxxxxxx (67) Date: Feb-27-96 09:27:27 PST
Praise: Very positive experience

That's the oldest one so far. But, the fact is, no one (except an ebay employee, perhaps)can say for sure that they found the very first feedback. It's possible that there is a feedback earlier than 2/27/96 that has NO link to it. For example, if two new users left feedback for each other back in 1995 and then never left any more feedback, then no one will ever find those feedbacks because there would be no links to them. Know what I mean?

Sorry, gboy, I was doing this in the middle of some work and I think I forgot to read the second page of posts! Oh well, I'm off by only a day! It's too bad that feedback at that time was not directly related to specific transactions--it's cool to find out what the first feedback was, but I'd be really curious to know what the first auction was (besides Pez dispensers!)

I know it's past the 23rd but. . .couldn't beat the 2/28/96 feedback but I did come across a couple of interesting things:

One user who has elected to keep his feedback comments (private) with 101 positives and 72 negs!!!

Two interesting complaints:
COMPLAINT: Was very prompt in sending payment and positive attitude.
COMPLAINT: True to his word. Item bought was as described. Item sent in time as described.

AND one user who somehow managed to leave himself several positive feedbacks (and yes, he or she has been NARU'd).

Well, it's been about 7 months since this thread was active. Has anyone found a feedback older than the one below yet? I'm sure you all have been searching since March, right?

Hey - that was cool ! I'm an 8th generation
decendant of the claw; did find a few in March of 1996, but none earlier than 2/27/96.
Thanks for the fun exercise !

Thus proving that "generic" type feedback has been a part of the eBay experience since the very beginning.

Okay, I will state up front, I cheated to find it, but...

XXXXXXXX (123) Feb-27-96 Praise : Very positive experience

I don't believe it is the same one that was posted about earlier, because there is a whole lot more fb.

It is amazing how many users were interconnected back then. I was having to go 4-5 names up on the feedback list to find a user I hadn't clicked on already.

The earliest I could get to was 5/96 before it started looping.

Interesting find though. Do they still change positive feedback to neutral when it is posted by someone who is NARU? I never noticed that before.
