Hi AC,
Yes...I have an Ensoniq AudioPCI. If that banner kept popping up, even after all those programs had been closed...then it's not one of them causing it, right?

Not all running programs show in the "close program" window. Sometimes a few are less visible.
Check also in in your
start-program-startup
and in
run-msconfig then the startup tab to see what starts when you boot.

AC...
Oh wow...there ARE more. A couple sound sort of suspicious...
GoBack Polling Service?
LoadPowerProfile?
Can I safely uncheck these...and if so, will I have to restart to have their absence take effect? Are they running all the time?
I'm sorry. If I knew what I was talking about, I'd probably make more sense...

Well, I was going to ask you if you've had anything installed recently, but decided that you might not see the humour in that.
Just trying to lighten things up!

Have you ran AdAware to scan your pc?
It is not your new memory module for sure. Once RAM is disconnected it losses all the information stored in it.

It may be time to call professional help.
99.9% of the time I can figure my computer out but when things get too weird I call rent a nerd.
Maybe you have a similiar service in your area.
I have used such a service when I had a virus that virus scan wouldn't pick up.
If it's really bugging you, you could do a complete reboot.
Just a few thoughts.

Toke: If this critter appears off line there has to be a progam on your system that is flashing the banner.
It is a pain but if you do a find for exe you will see all of the executable files on your system. If you see anything that looks odd right click on it and do a properties for information, (sometimes in whole words that can be understood). Check out the dates too. A recent date may be a clue.
I think Norton can't find it because it isn't a virus, it sounds like a program.

Hi toke. Boy, I've never heard of this one!!
Have you tried to right click on this banner when it appears and then select properties? If it won't allow you to identify it in that way can you look at the VIEW tab in your browser's toolbar and select SOURCE to see if you can find the corresponding code?
Didn't you recently download an HTML editor?
Have you been playing around with any banner graphics when trying to build a home page?
I'm afraid I'm stumped!!

Hi
I downloaded this program called WinPatrol about 1 1/2 yrs ago. I Love it.
It's a small program that detects whenever a program is added to the start-up, or deleted from it.
You can go into the "active tasks" and check out each program currently running, and it gives information about each one.
Maybe it will give you a clue what's running in the background.....
Here's the link: http://www.winpatrol.com
Good Luck!
Edited because I tried to provide the link, but couldn't figure out how!!

smw & Blanche...
Thanks, you two. My greatest fear was that it was some kind of warning that there was something wrong with my system. Since that doesn't seem to be the case, I'm going to go after this in a far more relaxed fashion. It's such a relief to have folks to ask about this stuff...
cooltool...
Now you know if I had any of those VGBs, I wouldn't have cared about ANY of this...
melstep...
Thank you! I'm going to download it...maybe THAT will find the little bugger...or at least let me know what all these programs actually are...
BTW...All you do to make a link is:
[url ]whatever the url is[ /url] using NO spaces. This board uses UBB, which basically amounts to using brackets ( [&] ) instead of these thingies ( <&> ). Thanks again...

Toke: Sitting waiting for my car to fixed this morning I had a thought....
I wonder if this bugger could be a type of animated file that is set on "continious play" and it went bonkers and is looping, over and over and over....
I had a variation of a comet cursor on my system once that kept poping up and I couldn't find the damm thing to get rid of it.
So I went to Find and looked for all files that had been changed or updated by date within the 2 day period that it was driving me nuts.
It took quite a while looking at all of the file properties for the stuff I didn't recognise, but eventually I did find it and get rid of it.

Hi toke. I'm wondering if you've had any more problems with your computer. I remember you mentioned that AdAware had found a DoubleClick cookie some time back. Web3000 is often associated with the DoubleClick cookie and it causes behavior similar to what you described here with the banner.
When you downloaded the most recent version of AdAware a few days ago did you also download the new reflist.sig? The new AdAware program does not detect all of the Web3000 spyware modules but the new reflist.sig has more entries which are detectable. Web3000 is one of the more difficult spyware infestations to get rid of and, unfortunately, AdAware is currently offline because they're changing servers so I don't think there's much you can do about it until they come back.
This may well be a false alarm but I think it's worth pursuing just to be safe. Have you downloaded any of the programs listed on the following page?

Hi Blanche...
No...I haven't loaded any of the programs on that list.
I DID try to add that reflist.sig file, but I couldn't quite figure out what he wanted me to do with it. It's sitting in my recycle bin, at this very moment...
How do I get it into the program file? I've gotten spoiled by just having things unzip directly into the programs.

toke, is it still zipped? If so you can restore it to wherever it was originally and then when you unzip it be sure you make the AdAware folder the location for the unzipped file. The new file has to end up in the same folder as the old one. You will be asked if you want to replace the old reflist file with the new one and just click yes.
If it's already unzipped then restore it from the recycle bin and drag it to the AdAware folder then delete the old reflist.sig file. I usually use Windows Explorer for dragging but use whatever method works best for you.
I'm relieved you didn't download any of that software. The AdAware site has the most recent list but we can't get into it yet.
