"Backup generators are OUT for the most part in CA, ... and those that are not approved are illegal to use and if caught using, carries a really stiff fine and even jail time..."
Hey what a great scam... we cut yer electric to charge you more $$ and you can't use that ol' genset in the backyard. Ho ho ho.

You are absolutely correct. I feel the day is rapidly approaching when Californians will have to face the reality that nuclear power is the only way to generate enough power to satisfy our demands at a price that the average person is willing to pay. We already have 2 plants online and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a permit application for a third before this time next year.
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.

Although the Federal Energy Commision has determined that California is being gouged by the energy suppliers (against federal laws), Bush says it's "California's problem" and is going to leave California twisting in the wind. California didn't vote for him.
I work for a living so I'm a Democrat, but I wonder how California Republicans feel after voting for this child. How will Republicans feel if California's economy tanks, dragging the U.S. economy down with it.

I suppose this is what one has to put up with when they chose to live in a State which seems to outlaw everything but Aids!
High fuel prices, extremely high insurance rates, earthquakes, mud slides, wild fires, rolling black outs, over priced real estate, excessive utility bills, BUT remember this is where you chose to live!
You can’t even run your own generating system, that is insane! But, since the citizens of CA have chosen to both vote in, and/or support laws which prefer trees over people – laws which protect criminals instead of the 2nd amendment - apparently this is what the citizens of CA prefer – I can’t have a lot of sympathy – welcome to the monster you created!
Formula for cooling off, the next time you have a black out and the air conditioning stops and you are hot, go hug a tree!

First of all, I read an interesting article in Readers Digest which exposes Big Corporations such as Banks, Utility Companies, ect that use "coding practices". This means that the bigger the customer you are, the more personal attention you get. If you are a little guy, you'll sit on hold or go days without service. It's not too surprising that Ebay has not been subject to blackouts. Things that make you say hmmmm.....
By the way, I took offense to a previous poster who blamed our high energy prices on the Bush/Cheney administration. Why not blame the administration that was at the helm for the last 8 years that had no real energy policy ?

In California, I don't think ebay is considered a big company, esp. in terms of electrical usage.
Second, besides rca's post about servers in a secured/backedup building, last I heard ebay was building a backup site in another state that would kick in as well.
I read the Digest article as well, don't think it applies here.

I live in So.California and haven't had any problems with rolling blackouts. We replaced our light bulbs with energy efficient ones and reduced the time our pool pump runs. Our electric bill has gone from $150/month to $110 with these measures.
Gas is now $2.00/gal. everywhere. I think Dubya wants it to break the $3.00 mark so he can get support for his oil company buddies to drill in Alaska. My response to this is to just drive less or plan all my trips together.
I live in the coastal region, so we almost never require A/C. Both mornings and evenings are fairly cool, so by the time my house heats up, it has cooled down outside, which is when I open the windows and turn on the fans for a few minutes.
Most of the local stores have reduced lighting, which I love. I always hated walking into a store with blaring lights.
I'm sure we will all be rewarded for our energy conservation by increased rates to make up for the reduced demand.
