It's that time of the week again. Ooooh, I can hardly wait for the weekends anymore now that the weather is nice. Yard sales and estate sales everywhere!
What did you find this week? I found:
3 framed pictures for my new little townhouse--$3.00
Dr. Smurf's Office (Loc Blocs from early 80s)--$.50
Looney Tunes embroidered girls clothing--$.75 each
Sharp looking boys Izod sweater--$2.00
Like new Fendi striped purse (used only twice)--$5.00 (patting myself on the back for this one!)
About 10 (new in storewrap) packs of Hanes Smooth Illusions hose, size EF--$.25 each
Osh Kosh B'Gosh overalls (various children's sizes)--$.50 each
And I came home with $20 in my pocket. That hardly ever happens!
Does anyone know anything about the Smurf set? I can't find any on Ebay already so I can't determine the value. Thanks.
I love to hear other people's yard sale/estate sale/"real"-life auction stories. Please entertain me and share!

Mostly for me rather than for sale: 6 Addams Family videos (not recorded off of the tv) of the series - yippee. A rocking chair for my bedroom for $5 - it looks a bit uglier now that it's actually in my room, but I was going to throw something over it anyway.
For sale: a bazillion books at a dime a piece.
Things were reasonable this weekend - none of the "tupperware w/no lids for a dollar" types.
It's still early in the day, so I hope this bumps this up so others find it. (I love to hear others' great finds also.)

Just got back from Brimfield, without making a single purchase! After *only* two hours of looking around, my wife demanded that we leave!
Well, she is pregnant, so I guess I have to be kind to her

I don't know if it's worth anything but I got all this silverplated stuff for $4.00. One item is a coffee perculator with a glass top and little wooden dangly handles and a little spicket coming out the bottom. Also a tray with a creamer, a bell, two candle sticks and 2 little pots. Now I have to clean it...any suggestions?
I also got a beautiful leather jacket for $5.00. It's soft and the prettiest color green. This one is for me.
I got a princess house cup and saucer for $1.50, nike soccer shoes for $1.00, and a massive amount of books. Can't stay away from those books!
Actually pretty slim pickins but at least it got up into the 60's today!

My neighborhood was to have the big annual yard sale but it rained this AM. When it quit, we had the yard sales anyway, they started at about 9:00 am instead of the usual 7:00 am.
The once monthly yard sale at the big thrift store let me have a huge laundry basket full of stuff for just $15.
Sad to say, one of my favorite thrift stores will no longer have their monthly bag sale because too many "cheaters" were putting collectibles, jewelry, etc. in the bags instead of just clothing and shoes. I don't see how that store will survive without the bag sale as their clothing prices are very high--$10 for a used dress from Target.

I had been to about 6 yard sales before I came across the deal of the weekend;
Sitting there on a card table, baking in the afternoon sun was a very clear 8 carat diamond ring. It was marked at $1.00, so I grabbed it as quick as you could imagine and sauntered on over to the nice old lady sitting on a bench talking to her hubby. At first I thought it was an error in price marking, but sure enough, after I asked her "how much", she said $1.00! She said she believed it was surely costume jewelery that her aunt had given her 50+ years ago. I knew better.
Still, the yard saler that I am, I insticntively offered her 50 cents. She only dropped it to 75 cents, but I got her to throw in a couple of "Little Golden Books" to make the deal a little sweeter.
Needless to say, I went right over to one of the local jewelers and sold it to him for $42,000. I didn't want to put it on Ebay, since jewelery sales over the net can be kind of sticky, plus I already knew a local jeweler.
Not a bad afternoon! I made a net profit of $41,999.25, which does not include whatever I get for the Little Golden Books I intend to sell on Ebay. One is "The Pokey Puppy" which I have seen get over $20.00!

Oh boy, we're gonna get a flame war real soon...
Before it happens, I did vow never to get back to ebay...till I saw someone throw out 15 Cardboard Displays used to hold CD's and such!!
I managed to save a Snoop Dogg Cut-out Stand of him, a Christina Aguilera Display that was supposed to've been used during the Holiday Season, a J-Lo Display for her latest Album, two N*SYNC Poster holders, A Destiny's Child Display for their Latest CD, a Janet Display for her Cd's, a Billy Gailman Display, a remnant of a Mariah Carey display (The backer board that has a somewhat "slutty" type picture of her, from her Butterfly Album), two Different Backstreet Boys Display (One Display and part of another), a Run DMC Shoe Display and counter triangle sign and a Soprano's Display.
Many were still in the boxes, unopened and probably given a cursory exam and thrown somewhere on the side. The Run DMC Shoe showed some shelf wear, but was still in excellent condition. One of the N*SYNC Poster holders has a sensor and a $4.95 marked in ink on it; it's possible I cn restore it abit.
The guy who was hauling it out was just following orders. "Throw out anything that's tkaing up space back there!!' she said," he said to me as he walked back to his workplace.
Sadly, I couldn't save a Sting Display and a Madonna Music Display and Foam Poster from the Erotica Album from the Compactor.
Can't win them all.

I got a case of the twist to set kitchen timers for 50 cents each.
And I followed some jerk home who bought a diamond ring before I could get around the table so I can come back and leave a gift spliced into his ignition system. He had the oddest license tag - It said I troll. Must be a big fisherman.

Sounds like a good weekend for "saling" everywhere!
Bobarrett--a potato chip delivery jacket--pretty interesting. Sounds like something that would sell well on Ebay. Also, DH found a Trac-Ball set at a yard sale (box in poor condition), but he and I play with it ourselves. It is fun!

We just got back from vacation so haven't been going to many sales, but I did stop at one last weekend on my way to the store and picked up a 1970's men's Hamilton LED watch for 50 cents. Did a search on eBay and these seem to go very well... I'm going to have the batteries replaced, hopefully it still works!

We had a really dead winter around here and I was disappointed because we USED to have sales all year long, in spite of the weather.
So, I am happy to report that spring has sprung and there are a lot of sales with good finds. I did really well at two church rummage sales last week and this week. They actually had nice items instead of the usual broken and worn stuff.
I bought a beautiful 6 foot long, hand-made five panel ceramic picture or wall hanging that will go great in a room I just redid. I also found 12 and 15 inch tall Wolfard oil lamps for a song. Some great cookbooks, small appliances, and cookware that I have been wanting, too.
About everything I've bought is stuff for me, though! Just so many things I've been looking for that I'm quite delighted!
I just got in and saw my email requesting that I edit my "yard sale finds" post. 1/2 hour is not much time to edit when I'm not on my computer 24/7 especially on Mothers Day. Unfortunately by the time I recieved the email you had already deleted my post. The word "jewing" within my post was not meant nor stated in an offensive manner. "Jewing" refers to "dickering" or "haggleing" over prices at sales and everyone who flea markets or yard sales knows the conotation of the term would know it was not stated nor meant in a slanderous or derogatory manner. If I offended anyone, please accept my sincerest apologies, as this was not my intention when I used the term. Sorry.

Well, I also went to Brimfield this week. Unlike Peter, though, I managed to find a lot of great stuff. What can I say? I don't have a wife [pregant or otherwise].
Since I'm no longer selling on eBay, I wasn't trying to find any great bargains that I could resell at a profit. Instead, I was looking for some special items to add to my pocket watch collection. Still, I think I did well. I ended up with one watch that's probably worth about $2500 and "only" paid about $1400 for it, and another one that could be worth as much as $400 only set me back $250. As I said, though, these are for my private collection, so I'm not really all that concerned about whether I got a "great" price or not. The important thing is that I found some great items and didn't pay "too much".
Regards,
Barry
P.S. I just have to say what a sad, sad commentary it is on today's society when a racial slur like this becomes so "common" that the people using it don't even realize it is a slur. Yes, I happen to be Jewish, and yes, I have always found the phrase "jewing somebody down" to be extremely offensive. It's not a matter of an innocent phrase that the "P.C. Police" have decided to make evil all of a sudden. Instead, it was originally meant to purposely slander a whole group of people, and still has that meaning to many people today. The fact that the person who used it in this thread wasn't MEANING to slander all Jewish people doesn't make it any less offensive, at least not to me.

An "as new" nicely upholstered tall-backed office/computer chair with hardwood arms and feet , w/rollers (for me!) $10.00 Which I had to bungee-cord into my trunk as it wouldn't fit in the car. To complete things , friends appeared in their pick-up , and so I got it delivered without smashing it onto the highway !
3 vintage flocked organdy aprons $1.00 each.
Dave Brubeck quartet album from 50's , red vinyl .15
Vintage viewmaster .75
Vintage peach silk crepe robe with long bias -cut skirt, scalloped satin collar and cuffs, very Joan Crawford , that's definitely a Keeper ( my Mother's day gift to myself !)$2.00
As stated in my earlier post. This was not meant in any derogotory manner. I did apologize for my ignorance in using the term but normally if a persons issues a sincere apology it is graciously accepted when no malice was intended. Hope this thread will continue to bring joy to others reading about some great yard sale finds as was originally intended instead of turning into knocking "NanasTurtle" even after a most sincere apology was issued and I have been educated concerning using a term that I had no idea meant a racial slur nor was used to insult anyone. I am not a raciest in any manner and would never intentionally hurt anyone knowingly.

So many new goodies, so little time....
I guess the best was a wooden "sailors box"-you know, a sea chest. It was filled with books (my favorite goodies)!! Took it home for $45.00, books included. The top stuff are about 50 STAMPLESS LETTERS from the civil war, 3 1803 Bibles, a 1770's copy of "Pilgrims Progress", and tons of tracts. Before I bought it, I asked if they were sure on the price, and they said, "Yep, we don't need our uncle's junk box anymore." Thier junk, my treasure. I also bought my wife a 2.5 ct. diamond, but it wasn't at a garage sale!!! Guess I gotta spend more time selling now, huh?!

When you stated "society" since I was the one who ignorantly used a term I (honestly) have commonly used to mean "to bargain", I took that to mean me. I do appreciate you accepting my apology and I have taken my lesson to heart! ~smile~
