Dottie...that was fabulous! I remember when ebay was not a mall. When ebay was not the mall landlord. It is very very sad that they don't even both to call ebay a community anymore.....we are just mall tenants....just pay the rent.....do it as the corporation tells you. As someone pointed out .....type is a book title and have the search tell you to go to half.com to get a better deal......Oh, and remember when selling was fun and you made a profit.....Jake

I remember when eBay's feedback rules were that you could "leave a comment for any user for any reason." It was not unusual to enter feedback for someone on eBay if you dealt at another auction site or made a trade or purchase not in conjunction with any site. And it was allowed.

Of course, some users got a lot of negs that way too. I remember one lady telling me that if I didn't refund her money, she'd leave me a neg each day until she received it. Yikes!!

I remember eBay when you could purchase an item without seeing a picture of the item first, because there weren't all the bad apples.

I remember eBay when I could list an item for $0.99 and still make a profit.

I remember eBay when there were no pictures of that guy talking on the cell phone wearing that god awful ugly "leather" jacket.

I remember eBay when there was no Billpoint, Paypal, ExchangePath (thanks for that one, AW!), or any of the countless other online payment services dipping into my pocket.

I remember when you could get $10 for signing up with Paypal, immediately after signing up.

I remember when 75% of my customers actually took the 5 seconds to leave me feedback.

I remember when I could email someone to make sure they received the item they purchased from me, and they were honest and said "yes" instead of lying to try and get a refund (boy was that a long time ago!)

I remember when people didn't steal my pictures and text for their own auctions.

I remember when actually getting a bid on an item wasn't that big of a deal, because there weren't 500 other auctions exactly like mine.

I remember when snipers would fight at the end of an auction, instead of missing it completely due to the "Watch this item" feature.

I remember eBay when IMAGE HOSTING SERVICES DIDN'T CHARGE YOU TO PARK YOUR PICTURES ON THEIR SERVER!

Oh... Bill Clinton was and will always be "the master plate spinner" (remember the old tv shows with the guy spinning several dozen plates on top of sticks simultanously). Now that his circus troop is gone the plates are falling... and no one in Washingtion can keep them spinning fast enough, no matter what they do.

No Bush fan either,

I remember Ebay when they sent out those pesky notices asking If I wanted to purchase stock.
The same ones I sent to the trash, saying "that'll be the day"
sheesh....back to listing.

I remember Edski coming home from work in October 1996 and me saying, "honey you have to see this neat place on the internet where I can bid on trading cards to finish my Wacky Packages."

I remember March 1997 saying to Edski, "honey can you address some packages? I have 5 items that have to go out tomorrow."

I remember figuring out there was a feedback system after I had about 36 and wondered why there was a number behind my name.

I remember when there was only the Cafe on AuctionWeb.

I remember hanging out 8 hours a day, every day, in the Q&A.

I remember selling for 6 months without any photos. I said, "email me if you want to see a photo" and sent them an attached scanned, uncropped photo and taking the entire afternoon every day to do so.

I remember Ucanbid & Cyberyenta teaching me how to do the html to include a photo in my listings.

I remember carrying packages down the steps of the tiny townhouse and down our 45 angle driveway and having to stand in line and the other customers at the P.O. glaring at us.

I remember October of 1998 having to move because eBay took over the townhouse.

I remember building the offices and converting the entire bottom of the new house to "ebayville" in December 1998.

I remember Edski quitting his job to join me full-time and never being so scared in my life about our future.

I remember sending Pierre pretzels from my uncle's bakery and getting a personal thank you.

I remember eBay Christmas cards signed by the staff.

I remember a personal call from Malcolm on a Sunday afternoon.

I remember when Sonny wasn't Sonny.

I remember the black board, the inception of Honesty, Cari, vinyl pant and *beep beep* chair auctions, limited hourly listings and getting up in the middle of the night to check my bids.

I remember, for a brief moment, being the #1 feedback, then the #3 and then sliding into anonymity.

Ebay was so slow you could get on an item bid page and keep pressing refresh during the las 30 seconds to slow others chances of bidding on that item.

I remember AuctionWeb and eBay before MEG and those are pleasant memories. The memories that I have after MEG are not pleasant.

The going price for a homemade duct tape wallet was $3.50 and every single one sold.

The good ole days.

I remember when I was the only ebay seller in my state and I could buy GOOD stuff cheap!
The REAL good ole days!
I miss that!

...and when my garage sale shoppers weren't looking for that "a very unique item that could be JUST anything..."

Interesting comments made by folks from eBay in the story within the link posted by Marble.

Definitely worth the read!
(be sure to follow the links on that story for MORE...)

The help boards were "live" and I could answer questions that the staff didn't know.

I would talk on the phone with eBay staff.
Mary Lou was a real person.

And so was Skippy.

i remember october 17th 1996 when i registered late that night. my girlfriend was yelling at me to come to bed and it was cold out, but someone had mentioned ebay at the flea market that day and i was VERY curiouser. i looked it over and joined immediately. i didn't have a camera back then, i typed out painstaking descriptions and had extremely gratefull customers. it was fun.
