I agree with keziak,
I was wondering myself why these "other" sites don't advertise? I have only heard of these "other" sites from coming here to AW.

I just don't think word of mouth will work for these alternative sites, because eBay IS the word of mouth. I think it will take some GOOD catchy advertising and a VERY SIMPLE site name to overcome eBay. We need to recapture the excitement of being able to find that certain piece to fill or add to your collection. I know thats what brought me to eBay.
You can't know how excited I was to be able to finish my "Nancy Drew" collection. Then I went from that to upgrading every book to 1st or 2nd editions and I was HOOKED. Heck, for 20 years around here I've tried to find the books I needed to no avail.

That is IMO who we need to be appealing to with a "alternative site".

"other sites don't advertise"

Simple, no money to do so.

Personally, I think eBay sellers basically suffer from an ABUSED WIFE SYNDROME!

kinda true, we take the abuse, defend the abuser and come back for more!

insightwatcher: The first time I made that analagy when they had the "Reserve Fee Fiasco" nearly 2 years ago...

It definitely describes EXACTLY how I feel about the changes at eBay sometimes... and yet we keep going back for more.

I've been there before in life though... and I know how to make a workable plan!

We also have checked the other sites and still can't find one that compares to eBay as far as buyers. When we scroll through lists on other sites and see hundreds of items with no bids, we come back and list on eBay. As much as we would LOVE to see eBay crash and burn, it is not going to happen, at least not in the near future. Since this is how we make our living, we can't afford to jump ship. Yes, we have listed on the other sites, but cannot get the prices we do on eBay.

On the other hand, those other sites are a great place to buy from, when outrageous starting bids and reserves are not used

If another site could get the same scale of buyers, we would drop eBay like a rock. We will keep watching them, who knows, maybe this time eBay did push things to far.

Hey folks, I admit I have not read this entire thread...too much thrashing.

But, Popula is a very nice site. I've made a couple purchases there (Aussie seller, I'm U.S.) and it was super smooth. The site looks great, well worth visiting. Listing??

Dottie, thanks for the info on the listings at sellyouritem.com tho I haven't started listing there yet. Makes it sound really easy to list from another site. Don't they also have free email? I saw that on one of the sites. If they do, guess I'll be wearing shades at ebay soon. That would be a good way to advertise their site, surprised more places haven't thought of that, tho Yahoo did.
