Well, I guess I'm one of the last hold-outs. I charge exact shipping. Since I sell a lot of glass and the weights vary greatly I can't charge a flat fee. Well yes I could, but I'm not going to charge someone 5 or 6$ for something that I know will only cost 3 or 4 dollars. Oh yes, while I'm at it, a lot of the times I give my customers an option - parcel post, priority and if it is the correct weight, first class! Heaven forbid, I must really be bucking the system. But... I wouldn't change myself for a second. Everyone has to follow their heart and conscience and do what is right for them and I do what I feel is right for me. ....and I skip merrily away.

"I charge exact shipping."
I think you meant you charge exact postage. Postage is one element of expense for shipping.
Would it be fair to go to a FF restaurant and order a hamburger, then the clerk says .79¢, and you say, "ohh no no, I just want the hamburger, I don't want to pay for your expenses(electricity, labor, supplies). The meat and bun should only cost .20¢!"
I don't mention shipping or handling in my listings. I state "Service." I pay most of the Service cost to the shipper, and the remainder goes to my service of packaging the item.
