I am still SirCam-free, thanks to Norton
AntiVirus and the quick manual edit (in DOS) to remove SirCam from my Windows Registry File.
For those of you who have had SirCam freeze up your system because no .exe files will open, you can still save your system and your data if you leave your system running and
use the "manual removal" instructions from the Symantec website, which have to be done from DOS. If you don't have a secondary computer to get to the Symantec website, call
a friend and have them go there and print out the instructions for you, or read them to you step by step over the phone.
Once you've done the manual removal and can
run your programs again, immediately go to the Symantec website and run the clickable
"fix," just to be sure.
Norton has been intercepting SirCam on my incoming emails several times a day. I always write the sender back and warn them that their system is infected--otherwise, they may not even realize what's going on. I include a link to the Symantec website in my email. Several complete strangers have used the fix and then written "thank you" emails back.
The only way to stop this thing from spreading is to warn people, and to let people know when they have it so they can clean it off their systems. Otherwise, it will keep reproducing exponentially.
Also, thanks to the person who suggested
turning off the "preview pane" on email.
I recently upgraded to a newer version of Eudora, and it had this feature, and I didn't know it was something I could turn off. Thanks to this board, I went to "Options" and turned off both the preview pane and the "automatically open next email" function, which (hopefully) will allow me to delete anything that gets past Norton before it activates.

FYI: the headers sent with these SIRCAM VIRUS emails are actually correct.
This means that you can extract the name of the ISP (and the sender) from whom the header of the email.
Suggestion - send an email include the headers, not the virus/attachment to the ISP, use "[email protected]" they will cooperate in stopping the emails. this virus is clogging up their computers also and they are interested in finding out which of their customers are inadvertently involved.
