I detest having to click on those dopey "click here" signs to see the pics.
When it opens you then have a stupid pop up to contend with.
I feel sorry for sellers who use that kind of picture hosting service. They just don't get a look in with me.

What causes me to use the back button?

1. Music – any kind!
2. Wild background especially one that blends well with lettering.
3. Limited payment methods, no PayPal.
4. Excessive picture size, some add several and by the time you have scrolled down through them all you forget why you wanted to look at it in the first place.
5. Excessive TOS, I just want to bid on the thing, I’m not interested in the sellers life history and the rules they have made for mine.

Well, I finally saw something I do on this thread: only ship once a week (except at xmas when I ship almost daily). I don't hold checks though, so most people who pay by check get their stuff faster than if the seller ships daily but holds checks for 10 business days.

And I try so hard to be perfect. (Is there a smiley with its tongue in its cheek?)

ugh, i hate them too. i'll occasionally click on one if it sounds like something i really want, but only one and then i'm out.

i also dislike the listings that have small (dimension-wise) photos on the side, but are apparently loading the 100-200k photo for the 'click here to view larger' photo at the same time. what's the point?

How about the auctions that have the words trailing your cursor. I"m not sure what it's called, but it annoys the beejeebers out of me!

I don't take paypal or billpoint, but I have tried to make my auctions buyer friendly; I take personal checks and cash.

dejavu "Seller states they only ship one day per week."

I'm with saddie999
I can only ship once a week;

Shipping companies charge extra for more than 1 pick up a week.

I have a full time job in addition to ebay.

My post office is far and always very crowded.

I thought by stating this at least the buyer will not have high expectations for super fast delivery? Although, I will happily make the extra trip, if the customer requests expedited service.

Bad grammer and spelling. I can handle one or two mistakes. If I see any more than that I hit the back button.

I like this type of thread. It allows sellers to keep themselves in check and know what will cause a buyer to be turned off.

To me as a buyer, I hit the back button when I see.......

ALL CAPITALS IN THE DESCRIPTION.

Improper spelling, poor punctuation and poor grammar.

A TOS that is unusually long and overbearing indicate the person is an angry personality and a control freak. I don't want to deal with this person when something goes wrong.

Poor picture quality.

High negative feedback received and failure to give positive feedback when deserving buyers have earned it. I check too!

High shipping and handling fees for an item that doesn't warrant the amount asked for.

And MY number one reason for hitting the back button is........

FAILURE TO LIST THE SHIPPING CHARGE

No exceptions on this one!

No shipping charges posted.
Poor description that does tell you anything about the item, like a CD that doesn't list the songs.
If I have to go to Andale or someplace and fill out a bunch of crap and give payment info. I also hate canned automated E-mails,I bid personally now you can deal with me personally.I don't need your dog packing it because your too busy.(I have got a few packages the dog had to had packed.)
Those lying ads written by the Power Seller Pros that are convinced their method works because that is the way some big shot recommends that don't know crap.I know the item never sold for that figure you quoted, and by the way you won't find it anywhere on E-bay at the high price you claim it sells for along the the rest of the lies in your ad.

I just woke the cat up laughing at that comment!

I thought of another thing that sends me packing...Andale. I don't mind sellers who only ship on certain days, just make sure and let me know in your terms. When I was listing more, I shipped twice per week but didn't hide the fact.

Great thread

I hate
-'L@@K' and LQQQK
- ALL CAPS AND NO BREAKS FOR PARAGRAPHS ESPECIALLY WHEN DESCRIPTION IS 25 LINES
- high shipping/handling
- music
- weird background
- no pics or click here for pics
- bad grammar and spelling (typos fine, I make them too, but grammar is annoying!)
- TOS that make me feel like I am either 5 years old, stupid, or a convicted felon

I can't post shipping really because so many of my buyers buy multiple items. I am known for trying to get the best deal and I don't charge handling, so it works out OK. I just charge exactly USPS or FedEX ground fees, and use First Class when possible.

Ok, so now we know what everyone hates. On the positive side: How about hearing what you like to see.

What makes a great auction?

Maybe we should start a new thread.

Interesting....
Very few mentioned POOR DESCRIPTION!
My biggest turn off is a POOR DESCRIPTION.
Pictures DO NOT substitute for a good description of the item, IMHO.

I think of eBay as the Old Market Place of the New World..
Every auction and eBay seller is unique in their own way....
A giant Flea Market with all kinds of personality showing
up in auction text..What makes me hit the back button...?
Nothing I came to that auction to look around and
maybe save a buck or two..
Music, Caps , Misspelling, Wild Backgrounds, Pets.....
These are all things that make it fun ...

I kind of agree with jumpinjacko. Over the years I have met all kinds of sellers at flea markets and in antique stores and they each had their own kind of personality.

That's the way I find ebay. Some sellers like the fancy look to their auctions, others like them plain jane. Some can't spell or describe things, others can't take pictures very well or they don't have the right camera. But it doesn't necessary mean that there items aren't worth buying.

I don't care for music or brightly patterned backgrounds. Bad grammar or bad spelling doesn't bother me. An angry TOS does though.

Going back and rereading this thread..I have made some
observations concerning my own auctions..

Wild Backgrounds......Me
Large pictures.....Got that
Flashing logo......Yes
No Pay pal or Bill Point....Me
PAYPAL bashing....Of corse
Pictures of pets....Sure
Java script.........oh ya
Spelling mistakes......Tons
Poor grammar.......always
ALL CAPS......YOU BET

BOTTOM LINE....I’M SO BUSY ...
I HIRED ANOTHER FULL TIME EBAY BODY TODAY

Followup off-topic question: Are there keyboard combinations to maximize or minimize a browser window? Is there a summary page of keyboard combinations online somewhere?

Ya know it's kinda nice w/ the "WE ONLY TAKE MONEY ORDERS & CASHIERS CHECKS" You can sometimes get a good deal on "hotter" items, cuz alot of people don't like to bother, if you don't mind the minor hassle.

I mean I'm at the post office 2-3 days a week anyhow, so buying, sending a money order is no big deal if I save money in the end.
All that & a Bag of Chips Too!!

keep this in mind most seller start their auctions
at the price they’re happy with...and it usually has
a nice profit build in....anything over that is gravy...

jacko,

You're really correct in a lot of respects.

If the one widget that I've been lusting for to complete my collection was MO only, and it was finally ending within my budget, and it had loud playing music (I have my speakers turned off), and jumping gifs, and it was ending at 3am, and had $5 handling built in, I'd set the alarm, jump out of bed and bid on the stupid thing!

But except for that one widget, my list of when I hit the back button still holds. The money order is just a pain. It costs almost as much as insurance for an under $50 item, and the time it takes to get one, yadda yadda, so except for the one exception above, I'm not paying with any payment instrument that costs me money and time. (I would pay with c2it by the way because for 50 cents, I could stay in my jammies and pay instantly - that's convenience, and that I'll pay for.)

I don't mind the flashing gifs.............BUT it I have to scroll 3 pages of them I'll move along.

Music...........one time this seller has this loud baby giggle noise that scared me and it felt like my heart stopped beating for a sec. It was late and things were quite then BANG ! Then thisother seller had this really cool music that I actually sat and listened to until it finished.

But the automatic Back button winners go to ANDALE SELLERS. Everytime I had bid on one in the past I ended up on mailing lists. Andale would rent out their harvested email lists to other sellers so I be on even more lists. NO THANK YOU. And I don't like having to go report to your online form just to leave you my address. You can get it off my paypal payment, my email response letting you know I've mailed payment, or off the money order i'll send if mailed in.

WOW! I guess I started an interesting thread for people.

After 10 minutes searching my favs this morning, there MUST be one addition that has been missed by all of us so far:

SIZES and/or DIMENSIONS!!!!

I found three items to bid on that were ending from 10 minutes to 2 hours and ALL 3 were missing critical info: dimensions!

As a collector/dealer of antique and vintage toys, it is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to know each and every toy that has ever been produced; so we many times rely on gut instinct to purchase....but we do so only with information to make the decision!

PRIME EXAMPLE: A 1950's tin tractor trailer rig advertising a defunct department store chain, was ending within 10 minutes....I started to bid and then re-read the ad: NO SIZE! This item could be anywhere from 4" to 36" and bidders need PERTINENT info to be able to bid! What I got was a HUGE power seller logo; invitations to "check our other auctions"; info on ALL the ways to get the seller his money; and what evils will happen to the buyer who doesn't complete a purchase.....BUT NO SIZE!

BACK-CLICK!
Go to AW and whine!
Seller just lost another $10 on his bids!

Don't tell me about your eBay store, kids, grandkids, cat, dog, three-legged sheep you took to the prom.....

TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO $ELL!

thanks you verrrry much and welcome to Wednesday!
