"Today has been a terrible day for the United States and many people in the eBay community. The thoughts of everyone at eBay go out to the victims of today's tragedy and their families."

One report said that knives may have been the weapons of choice on some of the hijacked planes, from cell phone calls they got. Hmm, about 20 years ago I absentmindedly packed a kitchen knife in a carry-on bag, returning from college, and was embarrassed as heck when a security guard pulled it out at the gate! Do they not have machines to catch knives now?
I guess that's catty, but FOUR airplanes virtually at the same time??

I was wrong earlier. I said that we were bombing Afganistan. That was not fact. I meant to say that "Afganistan is being bombed". At the time, I didn't know whether it was the U.S. or not, but now it apparently has been confirmed that it was not the U.S.
keziak,
I heard that knives were used also. Metal detectors can find those. I saw a news report on TV that thought maybe they were knives made out of something hard other than metal...
Leaders around the world - including most in the Middle East - offered messages of support.
Afghanistan's Taliban rulers condemned the attacks and rejected suggestions that suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden, who has been given asylum in Afghanistan, could be behind them.
President Gen. Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, one of three countries that recognize the Taliban's government, condemned the attacks and called for cooperation to combat the "modern-day evil" of terrorism.
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat offered his sympathy to Americans and said he was horrified by the devastating attacks, which also hit the Pentagon.
Arafat offered his condolences to the American people and government. "We are completely shocked. It's unbelievable," he said.
Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, whom the United States has accused of backing international terrorism, called the attacks "horrifying" and urged Muslim aid groups to offer help "regardless of political considerations or differences between America and the peoples of the world."
Syria's government condemned the attacks and offered condolences to the United States and the American people, the official Syrian Arab News Agency reported. Syria has also been at odds with the United States, which has accused it of backing terrorism.
Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, a moderate who is struggling for power against the country's hard-line Islamic leaders, expressed "deep regret and sympathy with the victims" and said "it is an international duty to try to undermine terrorism."
Sheik Ahmed Yassin, whose Islamic militant Hamas group has carried out a series of suicide bombings in Israel, said he was not interested in exporting such attacks to the United States.
"We are not ready to move our struggle outside the occupied Palestinian land. We are not prepared to open international fronts, however much we criticize the unfair American position," Yassin told reporters in Gaza City.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said "there can be no doubt that these attacks are deliberate acts of terrorism, carefully planned and coordinated. ... I condemn them utterly."
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called the attacks "horrible and unimaginable."
In Germany, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder described them as "a declaration of war."
China said it was "horrified" and Chinese President Jiang Zemin expressed "grave concern for the safety of Chinese in the U.S."
"It is impossible to fully comprehend the evil that would have conjured up such a cowardly and depraved assault," said Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the attacks and called them "a blatant challenge to humanity."
"This mass terrorism is the new evil in our world today," said British Prime Minister Tony Blair. "It is perpetrated by fanatics who are utterly indifferent to the sanctity of human life."
Queen Elizabeth II said she was watching developments in "growing disbelief and total shock."
Pope John Paul II condemned the "unspeakable horror" and said he was praying for the victims' souls and for their families.
"This outrageous and vicious act of violence against the United States is unforgivable," said Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Ordinary citizens offered condolences at American embassies around the world - Norwegians left bouquets of flowers in a park near the U.S. Embassy, Russians placed flowers near the Moscow mission and in Budapest, there were dozens of candles.
In Berlin, hundreds of people marched silently down Unter den Linden boulevard at nightfall to a service at the city's main cathedral to mourn the victims.
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Mahathir expressed sadness, but urged the U.S. government not to seek revenge. "Retaliation will lead to the deaths of many people and will be followed by more counter-strikes," he was quoted as saying.
AND NOW MY MESSAGE:
~~~~~
I believe at this point it is IMPORTANT that we do not judge. That is not our job. One person's actions or even a group's is not representative of race, country or another individual. We must remember what those who perpetrated this atrocity did not... There is someone's mother, a child, your neighbor's brother in these other countries. We can not call for sanctions until we know more.
I heard on one of the networks that the hijackers used plastic knifes and box cutters to get past the metal detectors in the airports. They were stabbing the flight crews with these knifes so the crew would open the door of the cockpit and they could take over. Also, one network reported that a few of these people may have been employees and more easily able to get past security.
Airlines fear that ticket sales will drop so drastically after this incident that the airlines will go bankrupt. The government may have to enforce security in our airports, otherwise the economy may be severely affected.
Japanese stock market was down 6%, last figures. What do you think Wall Street will look like on Thursday?
I am so glad you are OK. So far you are the first person I "know" to be so directly involved, though I know that many people in my community here in VA have lost loved ones in the Pentagon...
I live directly across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center, in Hoboken, NJ. I saw the first tower go down. It is a sight I will never forget as long as I live. A lot of the injured were being ferried over here--I saw lots of people in bandages, covered with ash. Thousands of people who live in my town commute to those buildings. I don't know anyone who's been lost yet but I'm sure it won't be long till I find out. Waking up and seeing nothing where those great buildings used to be is very surreal and heartbreaking. I've had true fear running throughout my body since yesterday morning.
Sorry I didn't post this last night, but I was just way too tired and feeling rather sick.
But I heard late last evening on the news that supposedly a woman in PA got a phone call from her brother. He was calling her on his cell phone around 8:00 PM Eastern time. He was with either a fireman or policeman, or maybe both, I'm not quite sure.
Now, here is the truly miraculous part:
They're beneath the rubble of what used to be the World Trade Center!
THEY'RE STILL ALIVE!!!!!!
Let's all pray that these people and others like them can be found in time!
Glued to the TV in total disbelief yesterday. A few minutes after the 2nd plane hit, my phone rang & I froze when I saw the Caller ID showed New York City. I felt like I had been transported to some Twilight Zone movie. I don't have relatives in NYC.
Picking up the phone, I could hear some man distraughtly yelling, "Sis, I'm OKAY! I'm OKAY!".
Immediately I was heartsick because I knew he had probably used his one chance at a phone line out & had reached a wrong number.
I told him I was glad he was okay & as gently as I could, told him he'd reached the wrong number but if he would give me his sister's name & phone number, I'd call her for him. I discovered she lives in the same large city as I but he wasn't sure of the number because she had moved (I've had this number for 8 years).
Plus she was a single woman & had a fairly common last name, so I knew I was going to have a time trying to locate the correct number. He gave me her address & I told him I'd find her one way or another. He said he'd try to call his nephew in CA & get him to call her but I knew his chances of getting another phone line out were getting slimmer by the minute. I gave him my phone number to call if he couldn't get through to anyone.
I wished him to be safe & he told me he'd been only a few blocks from the WTC. He was so shaken, he could only talk in brief, almost incoherent sentences.
As I thought, it took me almost 45 minutes of frantically searching phone record databases to find a matching name/address. I called & got an answering machine but passed the message along her brother was safe & hoped this message would get to her.
I kept calling periodically all day & finally reached his sister in person last night. As I suspected, he hadn't been able to get another line out & my message was the only one that she had gotten. I was so relieved that I was able to let her know he was safe.
At first she thought I was calling from NYC, then when she realized I was local, she was even more stunned. Seems she moved some number of years ago but used to live in my same area so he must have been totally distraught to mix up the numbers. I'm just so grateful I was able to find her & let her know. She told me he only lived about 3 blocks from the WTC & had been frantically trying to get news when she got my message.
As long as I live, I'll never forget the incredible feeling of surrealism looking up at the TV to see the destruction, then looking down to see the Caller ID.
I know that some of you aren't big PayPal fans, but they have a place on their home page where you can donate to a special fund they've set up to help those in this time of crisis. When you click through for more info., here is one of the things they say:
Who will receive the donations? PayPal will donate 100% of the proceeds to the National Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross.
Each one of us, in our own little way, can help in whichever way God chooses to use us. That phone call you made, the time you spent finding his sister made you an angel on earth, for a short time.
I am really glad you were there to get that phone call...
I am so glad you are OK. Please take care of yourself. I am sorry you were a part of the Holocaust. That horrible time scares me so bad that I cannot even watch anything about it.
A bit of trivia:
One day many years ago a young woman found herself unmarried and pregnant. She went to her doctor for an abortion. He was opposed to abortion and talked her out of it and into keep the baby. That baby was Adolph Hitler.
Thanks you guys. Too bad I lost my camera in the dust when it collapsed. And i'm still coughing as I type. And I might have to go and pee in 10 minutes, since i'm drinking a glass of water per 10 minutes to clear my system.
There's like a buying frenzy for ANY pictures of the WTC. I saw on the news people at a Train Station in New Jersy buying like 10 or 20 Postcards with the WTC pictures on them.
One sightseeing story I'll be passing on to the Grandkids...
We are very proud of you, Eventer. Thrilled to hear CS is alright. Please don't rush into activities, CS, listen to your body. Your lungs and body have been very taxed; you may feel the effects of this for a while. Talk to your doctor before taking any cough medicine. I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to stop the lungs from getting rid of the dust that you ingested. Don't hesitate to telephone your family doctor to let him/her know what is going on.
I think President Bush will wait to see what the stock market does tomorrow. If our stock market drops the way the Japanese market did, I believe our country will bomb Afganistan tomorrow. The Afganistan government was foolish enough to harbor this terrorist in their country. I am sure their government will find this was the worst decision they ever made.
I heard on the news around noon today that there was another plane on Tuesday that is now suspected of having almost been hijacked.
Seems there were 3 Middle Eastern guys on board and the plane was about ready to depart. For some reason (they didn't get into the particulars) the boarding crew became suspicious and ordered the men off the plane. They adamantly refused to leave, remaining in their seats. The crew called the police. And somehow, by the time the police arrived, the 3 men had just vanished and no one noticed them leave or knew where they might have gone.
I'm sorry I didn't capture all the particulars, but I believe the airplane was another transcontinental flight that was leaving out of New York.
Thanks for giving this the bump it deserved - it's hard to read through it and watch the TV reports today - but we need to, we owe it to those perished. We cannot forget them, no matter what your political views are.
I found that it had the same impact on me when I saw it on the news this morning as it did 8 years ago, the horror and fear on peoples faces, and all those innocent lives taken. I had to turn it off, but will never forget that day.
