bearmom,

You are so right.

As I stated before, this crisis goes far beyond NYC. There were hundreds of people in those buildings from other countries as well as people from all over the United States.

I know that I, for one, am extremely worried about my husband. He is working all weekend for the "war effort".

Every seller as well as buyer has to remember that we all handle horrible events and grief differently.

I am still bidding on Ebay, but that is my choice. If another bidder is too upset right now to bid, then we should show some compassion and stop being so negative.

I called my daughter this morning to see if she could get me some of those cemetery flags. I will use them and not feel bad about it at all.

I'm a seller who absolutely deplores and has a horribly negative attitude towards deadbeats, but I'm sickened by the selfish attitude of some of these posters. You have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what is going on in some of these people's lives. Although I live in California, on Tuesday EVERY MALE MEMBER of my family with the exception of my father was missing. My father's business was based in the WTC and he knows of only 3 people who are alive. Am I taking WTC excuses - you bet. I'm not pressuring anyone right now. I certainly wouldn't be checking my email right now if my closest friends or family were missing. Have a heart people. Yes, this is a business, but a lot of people have lost their businesses completely, how can you expect them to pay for whatever trivial item they may have bought on eBay. So big deal, we have to relist a few items - that's the least of of our problems.

kellco, it's unfortunate you feel my positive proactive thoughts are negative simply because it doesn't agree with your opinions. Perhaps now is a good time to review your beliefs and see if they have positive implications or if they are regressive as much of American's beliefs are.

The electric co., phone co, mortgage co, bank, credit cards, et al won't think it is "un-American" to press for payment for bills owed them....business goes on and you have to pay your bills--including ebay auctions--regardless of what is happening in the world. Wal-Mart and K-Mart are SELLING American flags and announcing the huge sales they are reaping right now from this product...not giving them away. A contract has already been awarded to re-build the Pentagon...this contractor didn't give a discount to the US. One of the most patriotic things we can ALL do is to go about our business right now...that will help America, the economy, and all of us in the long run. I sure hate to see the enemy think that we have been stopped in our tracks....I loved it when Rudy G. in NYC urged New Yorkers to go out to eat, shop, etc. etc. to prove they weren't brought to a halt by the terrorists. Just my 2 cents!

I wonder if some buyers would be considerate in return if I waited several weeks to mail their package! I doubt it.

Speaking of the.....here's my first buyer whining since the tragedy:

Note: buyer says mailed check on 8/26. however, auction ended 8/28.

"i have not received the book "xxxxx" yet  i mailed you the check on 8/26/01.  there is no reason that i should not have received it yet. (even with the events that took place on the 11th.  thats over 20 days.  if i do not receive the book this monday, i will check with e-bay to see what actions i can take.  this is unfair to me, it is not listed anywhere that it will take over 3 weeks to receive books.  i know that you have been with e-bay for a while and maybe this is just "one of those incidents", but i am really irritated.  please resolve this matter a.s.a.p"

I waited 10 days for her check to clear; emailed her on the 11th that her item would be mailed the next day; mailed her item the day after the Ny/Wash crisis. Now today that nasty email.

Her item is sent Priority with a possible two day delay.

When I started this thread I was thinking how inconsiderate it was for a deadbeat to show up out of the blue after never responding to my emails and suddenly use this as an excuse. I was discusted that people would take this road. It is no different than the people who are passing as volunteers to get into the disaster area to loot and steal.

This thread made a quick turn around and started pointing fingers at the sellers who also stated that old deadbeats from a month ago started showing up. We were called insensitive and unamerican. When the fact is that these deadbeats are the ones who are insensitive and unamerican by showing so little disrespect for the those that have suffered so greatly.

I have sent out emails to all of my winning bidders who have yet to pay and let them know that I am willing to cancel or extend any payments if needed. Not one of them responded saying that they would either want or need that.

So, I still stand on the words of my original post. A deadbeat from last month is still a deadbeat. If they chose to use this tragedy as an excuse long after they chose not to pay they are worse than a deabeat in my book. Anyone who makes gain out of other peoples suffering, whether it be financial or just pleasure, is the loswest scum I can think of.

Tigress :
I wish you luck and you have my prayers on your decision.

I was ready to eat the cost if she didnt contact me - noway would i Neg her. This afternoon she contacted me - Her brother was on a B. trip to the wtc and they hadnt gotten word he was safe till a couple days ago- She thanked me for being patient and said payment is in route. Ive had lots of delays in response to wbns from 5 sept there starting to come in now.

There is no way to differentiate between someone affected by this tragedy and someone who is reprehensibly using it as an excuse.

Therefore, don't.

Buyers are not the only ones using the WTC tragedy as an excuse. I bought a Music CD with “Buy It Now” on August 26th and paid for it immediately via PayPal. The seller said that it would be shipped immediately. When it did not arrive on September 14th, I emailed the seller and ask about the status of the package. She responded that with the tragedy and her family involvement, she did not get her mailing out this week, but she will try and mail it next week. I remind her that the item was bought and paid for over 2 weeks before the WTC was destroyed so she should think of a better excuse.

There are a lot of people both inside and outside of New York that are affected by the tragedy, but there are some deadbeat sellers and buyers that are using the incident as an excuse for their tardiness.

On the other hand some bidders will try to keep in touch. I had a NY bidder that won a textbook auction from me. In response to my EOA email, he told me that payment might be late because of the uncertainty of the mail service in NY; I told him no problem I will wait. He sent another email today telling me that payment will go out tomorrow and he was sorry that he could not contact me for the past few days because his ISP was down.

He kept in touch to let me know that he is trying to close the deal. I told him to forget about the payment, I will send the book to him. He has more things to worry about in NY than I have in WI, the only things that I have to worry about up here is cow sh*t, snow, and road construction.

30 auctions ended on the 10th
No response yet, that's O.K.
But 2 1/2 weeks ago some "putz" won an auction
And sent 7 emails that he didnt get paid so he needs more time, and more time...And more time
Morning of the 12th he wrote
" I will not pay you, I wan to donate the money to the 11th of sept. fund, and I cannot do both..."
Which would be really nice, but I just have a gut feeling
That this guy just used the tragedy
To get out of paying me, how awful is that???!!!!

I too have received a couple of these. Both were recent purchases. I've choosen to just move forward on those. With the amount of people missing I would hate to decide not to believe them and have it be true.

Add me to this list. Auction ended August 28, no response from buyer. I resent my EOA on Sept. 4, buyer says, "father had surgery, am sending payment tomorrow".

Fast forward to Sept. 14 when I file the NPB form. Email today says "I want to apologize for not getting payment out to you yet. With all that is happening since last week (I was working in Mid-town Manhattan when it
happpened), I have not been able to think of anything else."

So, I check her bid history. She is so overwrought, she's been bidding like crazy, even on the 11th (about 10 times). She has a positive 20 feedback, member since August 18 of this year. I've got 333 and no negs.

Do I neg her? This is what I replied to her, "Your email on September 5th stated that you mailed payment that day. That
was 6 days before the events of the 11th. You have also been actively bidding on many other auctions since then, even placing bids on the 11th as well.

I'm going to be filing for my Final Value Credit and relisting this item."

I think using what happened as an obvious excuse is horrible.

Here's my deadbeat's excuse:

I am so sorry about you not receiving payment after so long a time.

I actually gave the letter to a friend of mine in New York and while I was
there I asked her to mail it for me. She said that she did.

The auction ended 8-20. This guy makes me want to neg him right now.

There is one way to weed out the phony excuses (in some cases), which one of you did mention. If said person says that they don't feel like paying for your item for whatever reason, just check to see if they bid on anything else since last week. They're too grief stricken to send you payment, but yet managed to bid on a dozen other things? Definitely should raise suspicion right there.
