wowwow85- I do not know the answer to that question. I can tell you that I called 888-449-7669 and after speaking to them several minutes and being told I needed to send it in and it could take 2-4 weeks - I said I would be out of business by then. She said "Oh you use this camera for business" of which I replied yes. Next then I know she told me the camera is out of warranty but the Sony has a replacement program.

Now it is not replaced for free. It did cost me $171 to do this but it is cheaper then $400 for a new one. They will only do this is the camera model is in the replacement program.

All I can say is call them and ask.

I believe it is a 24 hour number. I do know that they are there on Saturday, for sure.

Just thought I'd tell you that if you do not want to wait till Monday.

richierich: So glad it worked out so satisfactorily. Mine's still working O.K., (although the zoom wouldn't work for a while after it fell off a chair, but it healed itself! )
I think the battery-pack is experiencing early dementia at times..therefore it's good to know about this replacement program, so I can maybe replace the whole thing for only a little more than a new battery-pack!

I'm sorry you had this problem - but what an informative thread this has been!

Thank you for bringing it here and letting all us fellow Mavica users pant for your results...and tell you all our "remedies" (that you'd already tried, probably) but without a single sheeeesh of irritation on your part; instead you helped us even more!

(Before I get toooo gushy: I'm gritting my teeth that you would only have to pay $400.00 for a new one? I thought mine was a real deal at $599+tax instead of $700 !! ) Of course, that was nearly 3 years ago. If one doesn't need too many bells and whistles...gotta love the 71.

Sony should give you a break, with all the new interest you've directed their way from here!

uglimouse-
I read this board all day long. If I can help I try. When I need help I come here first.

I am glad everyone has found the info here helpful.

I was looking at a new one tonight at Sam's Club $379.98 plus tax of course. It was a 75 not a 71 but looks just the same.

The one I just replaced I bought at the Sony Outlet for $400 in October 1999. It is a refurbished camera. So I figured $171 was not bad for a refurbished camera.
