"Here's a test you could run: list two auctions at the very same time...identical items, listing verbage, price, ending time, etc...one with a pic and one without. I'd be curious to see how it turns out."

I haven't done that, but try listing two identical listings with the same criteria you stated, and both with or without photos. I have done that and one auction tends to get all the bidding, or one gets less bidding. The test, one with and one not would not work because you're stealing demand from to the next.

I can see what you are saying, but having one with and one without would give you an idea about what buyers are looking for...that is, which auction are they more prone to bid on when the two are side by side; the one with a pic, or the one without?

My $$ says that with everything identical, except for the inclusion or non-inclusion of a pic, the auction with a pic will get the first action.

Since you're given them a choice, it may show they want to look at the photo, but does the photo cause them to bid. You would never know.

Quickdraw,
Why don't you go run the test. Send us the item #'s and list them for 5 days (keep the interest) and we can all watch for ourselvs.....deal??

If photos are the draw why do most bidders browse the regular Search and not the Gallery? I have never used Gallery as a buyer in four years.

when I do a search i always look at the ones with gallery pictures first...if a title sounds interesting I will still look, but would never bid without pictures....

of course I collect costume jewelry, only a fool would bid on that type of thing without a picture.

I found an auction earlier this evening that not only was a seller with under 80 feedback...there was no picture and they were asking 4 times what the shipping charge should be....wonder why there were no bids with only 5 minutes to go?

Sometimes bidding on auctions with very poor photos can pay off as very few ebayers bid on those items and a great price can be got. It's a gamble but if the risk is low ....

Most buyers browse the regular Search, as opposed to just the Gallery listings, because it can give a potential buyer the full picture; that is, what is this item going for, across the board. If one just browsed the Gallery, the listings you get to see are obviously restricted. Also, a listing can have pics, and not be in the Gallery.

On the items I've bought in the past, probably only one or possibly two, out of 30 to 40 purchases, have been from auctions without any pics.
