I had a buyer email me to ask if I could lower the shipping costs. I said "sure, if you will state in an email that you will not hold me responsible if it gets lost" Which she did, and I sent it out book rate. It did arrive, and she gushed about my spirit and honesty in the feedback...
But if it had gotten lost, I'm sure she would have complalined bitterly. Even though I had the email from her. Or, maybe not, who can say?

I do not even entertain the idea of debating or negotiating our shipping fees.

You guessed it, about a week later he emailed and wanted to know where his package was.
And his next move will be to demand a refund because the package is obviously lost in the mail.
Welcome to my nightmare.

One point that hasn't been brought up so far is that online retailers like Amazon, Dell, et al can problably negotiate lower shipping rates due to their size and volume. I've heard some people state that these companies have higher overhead but they also get cheaper rates than we do.

You can also negotiate lower shipping rates with your carriers. All you need is a bit of volume to do so.

WELL I STILL DON'T EQUATE AN EBAY SELLER AS A RETAILER
My cat does not equate 2+2 as being four. That doesn't make it any less so.
You guys are a jinx. I got my first shipping complaint in, I don't remember how long at 12:47 pm EST today. Now my streak is broken.

I have never had a complaint about shipping costs. I rarely publish the cost of shipping. I state in my TOS that shipping charges will be determined by weight & Zip Code. As soon as the auction is over & I have the Zip code, I email the shipping charges & the cost with & with out insurance. Never have complaints.

I haven't had too many complaints about shipping costs and I always state them up front in my auctions.
Usually the most complaints are from the people who buy the cheapest stuff and they also expect the best quality of service.
In real life retail you will find the same thing, the cheapest customers are usually the most bothersome and expect the best customer service.
Twelvepole states: I HAVE BUYING ON EBAY SINCE 1996 AND SELLING ONLY SINCE 2000 (STRICTLY HOBBY)
Hobby sellers usually view these things differently than people who seriously consider it their business. Besides, wasn't it part way through 2001 that he stated that he only just started selling?
He also states: QUIT COMING HERE PISSING AND MOANING ABOUT EVERY LITTLE THING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU ON EBAY...
Twelvepole, try selling steady day and night week after week and I bet you'd be here pissing and moaning right along with the rest of us.

Bow - I have one of those myself. Bought an 8x10 publicity photo to be shipped to the Netherlands and complained bout the price. I sarcastically answered that he could send a lesser amount if he wanted me to fold the photo in half and ship it in a 6x9 envelope.
Damn if he didn't send the shipping rate to have it folded in half and shipped surface. :::shakes head:::

Twelvepole,
Why is it doubtful? You're in here pissing and moaning about sellers pissing and moaning so why wouldn't you do it if you were selling full time?

I get these from time to time, but not too often. My favorite is when they ask for lower shipping on half. I have a canned response that I have no control over the shipping prices that half charges. Ebay is not too bad because I state them upfront when I can. I've had a couple of complaints, usually when I say exact priority mail shipping which I do on some items, and it matters which coast you are on. I've never had a serious problem with it though, and no negatives from that.
