Glass - I never saw it in it's DOS phase. Tthe version I used was a windows version but old enough that it came on floppies.
Gtootie - Yep that sounds like it. I will be selling bulk lots of items I order individually and other lots that are composite lots of multiple items i.e:
Item number 101 would be 50 pieces of acme whosiwhatsists item numer g5723
Item number number 312 would be 10 each of item numbers g5723, h9345, l9643 and 15 z7702
I need to be able to create inventory items that when entered will pull the individual components and quantites from my inventory totals. If I was just selling bulk lots of single items it would be easiers but some individual pieces could end up bings in 10 different lots.
If you or someone you know knows of such an animal I would be forever greatful! .....And would do their windows too

Okay, let's see if I understand.
Most accounting programs, perhaps all, have perfectly fine one-widget-in, one-widget-out capability. Would it be fair to say that that describes your business, Cheryl? You're not doing drop shipping, value-added or bundling in any way, right?
Okay.
If I understand Fenix correctly, she wants a program that can handle both physical inventory (widgets I have) and virtual inventory (widgets I have sold that I don't actually have) and that can spot sales trends of virtual inventory so she can time reorders.
Fenix, this is sounding awfully like...the retail catalog business! (What a surprise. ) Certainly these are tasks every cataloger needs to do.
I'm sure there is commercial software for such companies but you're hoping for a smaller, cheaper version, right?

That would be QuickBooks: Premier Manufacturing & Wholesale Edition 2004. It cost $379.95, but I think it will do what you want. Here is the link to read about it...

<expletive deleted> I'm not very happy right now.
Anyway, he was one of the dedicated cadre of customers who kept Haven Software's catalog order management system going even when the company seemed doomed. It was such a remarkable feat (customers refusing to allow software to die) that it was written up in Inc Magazine and Fortune. The company is now called NewHaven Software. I don't know if the current product is what you're looking for. Charley would have known. Sigh.

Fluff - you got the almost everything right on the dot except I am going to do wholesale only. Less work load, easily assorbable merchant account fees, fewer flaky people. Enables me to have high sales volumes down the road without having to hire on additional people. Now I just need to figure out minimum order amount.... Sorry to hear about your friend
Debbie - that looks like it is exactly what Iam looking for! Thank you! I am going to give them a call tomorrow to see how well it works in a virtual PC entviroment or if I would just be better off picking up a PC to run my accounting on. So,,, how many windows are there to wash?

I found with Quickbooks basic (PC) that at set up time you have many options for the type of business you are running. I went back and choose manufacturing (after playing with retail) and it does everything you want have asked for. All individual components can be listed seperately with SKU's and the finished product can be listed also. There are all sorts of charts to track inventory and sales. We looked for a long time and nothing compared to this.

I'm using Peachtree 2004 and am very happy with it so far - the inventory module is just one step below what I would really need, but I'm supplementing it with spreadsheets and its working just fine.
