Never thought of that. See how many pipes I smoke? I wonder why then there would only be a small hole in one acorn? The top doesn't stay up on its own for very long though so I don't think it would have made a safe ashtray. The acorns are rather small for that I would think. When I get the chance, I'll measure them, but I don't think they're much more than 2-1/4" long and about 1-1/4" wide.
My boyfriend said the leaves are bronze and the rest is brass.
Spaghetti time! Company's coming and I gotta run. . .

Makes sense now. The hole would have been to let the smoke from hot ash escape? Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!

I think paloma91 maybe correct. The burnt match was put in the side with the hole which would explain the appearance of that side and the hole. Really neat items

I would confirm the object's use by contacting a tobacciana expert. The book may have a different title now, but for many years Tony Hyman's "Where to Sell It!" was the best guide for getting in touch with experts in various fields, some of whom are quite generous about sharing their knowledge. Hyman himself is a tobacciana buff.
Looks almost like a knock off of the Victorian design.
