I've bought some things from Overstock. Two Tiffany style table lamps, one Tiffany chandelier, & later a jewelry box & a quilt. Postage was free for the lamps & one dollar for the jewelry box & quilt. They often run postage specials.
Everything was so much nicer than I thought it would be. Couldn't be more pleased.

The ad that I mentioned previously was for 50 pieces of costume jewelry instead of 100. It ended with 38 bids for $25.90. If the auctions get a bid in the last few minutes, they are extended for another 10 minutes. This one was extended. So much for sniping! This could turn out to be an interesting auction site.

So far I had listed only 3 items. One has sold as a buy it now already and loads of hits. Almost 100 on each auction for only being on a couple of days. Gotta get busy and list more. Forget listing on Ebay for a few days. I need sales, not browsers.

I went to the services board and asked Sonya if she could give a refresher on listing to a non-supported site through the Vendio Legacy system. Here is her reply:

Hi Sparkz,
Sure, no problem. Here are some steps:
1. Click on the Image Hosting button
2. Select images you want to use and click the Attach button, then select which attach format (attach or attach with counter) then click Attach
3. On the Select Auction Site drop down, choose "Other Aution site (generate HTML)"
4. Make sure the "New Auction" radio button is selected, then click on "Continue"
5. Take the HTML showing and paste it into the description box of the auction site you are listing to.
I hope this helps!
Regards,
Sonya

Very intersting...now, if you do it that way, does it qualify for a Sales manage produced auction with final value fees, or do you just pay for image hosting??

I believe since it's going through the Legacy side, and not the Auction Manager side, that image hosting fees would apply. I would like to see Vendio give present users a break and charge them only the regular sales manager fees for this site until they start supporting it, but that would be difficult. However, it would certainly be to their advantage to give their customer base an incentive to get them listing on this site.

If this becomes a viable auction site, I don't understand what will make it better than eBay, other than potential for listing fee competition.
I don't see it taking much of the antique field from eBay; it won't get enough of that "buzz", and the name "Overstocks" implies surplus new merchandise (although the listings in their antiques section now come closer to that than "antiques".
Do people planning to use it for selling new merchandise see any problems with the fact that they also do that, and could be competing directly with their "overstocks"?
The "pen pal" network thing is an interesting novelty, but frankly, it creeps me out. I'd rather make my new friends in bars.

Hi Damariscotta...I think you are correct. We tried some searches in antiques...the few listed were vintage 2000.
Another person mentioned the name 'Overstock' and its implications...to move the mass of buyers from eBay to a new site is a challenge.
An example, here in the city a new grocery store opened...cheaper prices...people visited and didn't go back. Even though prices were a bit higher at their old store, they knew the locations of products, could buzz in and out quickly.
It would be great for a little competition, but except for an entity such as Google, it'll be a challenge for a newcomer.

Now I've listed 2 items on Overstock auctions. I would list more, but there is no "sell similar item" link, so making new listings isn't as easy as it should be.

Hi
I got the email after I checked my spam filter setting, it seems that aol automatically has it set to cut out spam and i had to un check the box, so while I was on the phone with OS we clearned it up and im activated now..............didn't get a chance to list auctions yet, just too busy with ebay right now, but I am excited about listing since it gives me another place to list.

I have AOL for 7 yrs and this is the first time I had a problem receiving an Email.
Even when the spam filter was on I received all my auction emails and all emails when I ordered from web sites, why just OS email couldnt be delivered?
I know lots of people don't like aol, but I like it and I never have any problems with aol, this was the first time I had a problem.
I made a few listings with OS and it was no problem getting the pictures up, the first picture is free, and the second one if you choose to have more then the free one is 10 cents.

Tonimar: Mine took a whole day to show up. Have you got it yet? After I hooked up, I noticed that they took $1 from my credit card.
Everyone: Can someone explain to me the advantages of being someone's "friend?" I understand there's a contest, but what happens if I accept one of these invitations? Do my auctions get cross promoted? I'm confused (nothing new)!!!

Hi earthmum
Yes, i received it and listed a few auctions, I never got what everyone is talking about "friend invite".....
also they take the dollar so they can verfy your checking account, usually when they make there first charge against your card they give it back to you.
I also received emails after listing the auctions so everything is going along good as of now.

Heck, 20 cents a post, I'll give it a try, although I think they'd do better in the beginning to have free posts, and merely FVF, but I can deal with the 20 cents, although I really don't hold out much hope for any auction site coming up against eBay unless they are located outside of CA and their stupid laws.
SOMEONE mentioned MSN starting a competitive auction, guess they weren't around when MSN did have an auction, and it did little to nothing, wasn't promoted, and finally bombed out.
Google looks like the best hope to give eBay a run for their money, but I haven't heard anything like such is on Google's agenda.
ANY auction site which has to have your ads customized for their site is semi doomed, as it is too much trouble for most eBay people to totally restructure their auctions from eBay to fit some weird site. I always had that problem with Amazon, when Amazon was really hot, it was a pain in the derrière to post there because of the limited amount of characters they allowed.
I'm off to check out "Overstock" and see how it looks.

They are still having growth problems, but what service! I entered an item in two categories and it only posted in one. I wrote them and within minutes I received an apology and CREDIT.
And it's 23 cents not 20.
Are you listening eBay!!

WHY pay OVERSTOCK any listing fees?
Twern't that our big bug-a-boo with YAHOO AUCTIONS??
@ only 15cents???
If both BIGGIES (AMAZON & YAHOO) bombed in the AUCTIONS area, what makes ya think GEGY.COM (WHOOPS! I mean Ophrastock) will fare any better??
How DEEP is thine POCKETS??

I've already got bids on my auctions at overstock. There's still 5 days to go on them. That's better than I do on eBay.

if you go to the forums at O and in the bottom right hand corner is Patrick's corner or something like that....that's the ceo (I think). He/they are certainly trying hard I'll have to admit. He's posting statistics. Hope his server is up to it!

That's right, glassgrl. Patrick is the CEO.
Someone posted a link to a thread on the eBay boards that were still discussing Overstock and that hadn't been taken down. I went to the thread and there were some die hard eBay sellers putting OS down and bragging how long the thread had been up without being censored. I said a couple of good things about overstock and, guess what, the thread is gone POOF. CENSORED.

I just got the Friend thing,,,,,Accept or decline?.....do which? So that has nothing to do with my auction? I guess decline? It's not a question about an auction nor a notice of a buy? Thanks. I really don't care to have any Friends,,,,I want $$$$$$$$$.

jackswebb: I just hit decline.
I don't want to get into anyones friend list who might turn out to be a jerk. I really don't understand all this "friend" thing, although I have read all that I can. There is now a way to opt out of receiving the eMail, although it will appear on your home page. Just hit decline.

Do you really think ebay is being unreasonable by removing discussion of an upstart competitor on their own message boards? I don't know, it seems like a very reasonable thing to do.
I listed something on OS, it has bids, I am happy...however, not making plans to ditch ebay. I hope it works out, I am all for competition. I remember when yahoo did a big push, and then look what happened..nothing!
