I used to work for a large insurance company in WA state, I did everything but collect commission and build a book of business.
Not a licensed Agent.
Sparkz, hon, your paranoia chip is on overdrive.
Regarding the insurance, Fenix is right, as a matter of fact.
Many immigrant families, esp SE Asian, do share cars and households. It is no surprise a child is acting as translator. These families stick together, largely because of the ability to get a financial foothold, many hold down jobs "we" english speakers won't deign to take. They afford mortgages, create small business and pay taxes.
I really am amazed at the racism that has crept into this thread. The assumptions are laughable. BTW, you do want to get people licenses and get them covered. UI is a costly portion of any companies bottom line.
Also, while you are belly aching about "immigrants" from "mexico" may want to reconsider buying strawberries and other fruit and veg that requires long hours, low pay and a considerable risk of collecting enough pesticide to get cancer. Wouldn't want you to "enable" an industry that thrives, grows and corporatizes on the backs of people who are unwelcome in the communities they must live in to survive.
It's ironic that we gripe about job loss, but in fact, it's sticking together that gets a lot of the 2nd generation immigrants into colleges, onto payrolls and creating a tax base.
BTW, unless you came over a land bridge, you are also an immigrant.
May want to read: "Reefer Madness" by Eric Schlosser. It's accessible, and very enlightening.
Now, let's be nice.
Meowmix, sorry about your accident. Been there, be glad you have insurance. Don't get toooo worked up about the lawyer. Juries are not the sympathetic folk you think they are. Mention attorney and insurance companies stop working with you. BTW, they do have formulae for how they will pay on a car. Depending on age, they may total it anyhow. I know it sucks, but what the heck.
Edited to add: why do I know about the jury side? I used to do a TON of deposition and voire dire(sp) type video work. Juries just don't love the "nebulous" soft tissue injury cases.

LOL Japerton...Not racisim at all, though I was wondering when someone would mention that. I'm familiar with the strawberries you refer to. Within 1/4 mile of my house are 4 strawberry fields of at least 10 acres each, and all are operated by Asian immigrants. I live in almost the exact Center of California in the county which is the second largest in the country in terms of agricultural production. Most of the field work is done by immigrants, who now are in the majority in this county. I appreciate the hard work they do and the contributions they make to our economy, and I am proud to include many of them as some of my closest friends. The one thing you overlooked in my previous post was the differentiaion I made between legal and illegal immigrants. To become an illegal immigrant, one has to commit a Federal crime. I welcome those who obey the law and enter the country legally to make a better life for themselves and their families. I do not welcome those who employee a coyote to get them here illegally.
Fenix has a valid point, and it looks good on paper, but the fact is, the question of the pros and cons of granting a drivers license to those in this country illegally in the belief they will get insurance for their vehicles was discussed and thrashed out at length in our last gubanatorial election. Enough people were convinced that the law needed to be repealed, that we recalled a governor over it. It's a hot issue here in California, and the pros and cons will be discussed for years to come with no consensus in sight.

I used to live in El Paso, and I swear at 6 and 7 am while I was driving down I-10 I'd have to dodge illegal aliens like dodging deer.
They were coming to their US jobs. Maids, factory workers, you name it. I was a barn manager at the time, but I don't think any of the US employers offered much money. OTOH, these folks were living in cardboard houses.
Now our corporations got the "gummit" to give them tax breaks and get the jobs out of the US and over to the cheaper hourly wages.
Kinda sucks.
Sigh.
But to make it ebay related:

I didn't want to make this about racism. I would feel the same way if a caucasian or anyone did this to us.
I just don't think that the law and the insurance regulations are on the victim's side when it comes to situations like mine.
We have had 2 vehicles totalled between the 2 of us and both were older and paid off so no big deal. Took the money from the settlement and dealt with it. This one is really stressing us out.
We'll see what happens in the next few days or so.

Actually, on a case by case basis, the nationality or ethnic background of the other person does not even enter into the question. Hell, it doesn't even matter if he was drunk, high on drugs, or an escapee from an asylum. If you've been through this before, you've probably discovered that the only thing that really counts is the quality of the insurance carrier you pay your monthly premiums to and the adjustors and employees that represent them. My daughter went through a situation very similar to yours about 6 months ago. She was rear ended and her car was totaled and she had moderate injuries. The other person's carrier was a discount company in Los Angeles that handles everything by mail and phone and with incompetent employees. Luckily, our carrier had local representation with live, competent people who held her hand and walked her through the process. Sometimes the company that charges the lowest premiums isn't always the best. Especially when you need them.

Don't forget UI also means UNDER insured.
So if they don't have enough coverage...get your carrier in the act.

The greatest thing that could happen to this country would be if the United States imposed a 200% tariff on every thing imported from China. Hopefully this will be proposed on Nov. 3rd.
