Before I put in my 2 cents, please tell me:
what processor do you have? Pentium II Pentium III Pentium 4? AMD? If AMD, which one? How much memory do you have?
Also, there is an 800 telephone number for free help with windows XP Service Pack 2 on Microsoft's site. I was working on a computer about a month ago and had to call them for help. I'll try to find the number for you.

alright yahoo!
My printer is working. Now I need to get the scanner working.
If I download the driver that I found on the HP website what do I do from there?
When I click on the hardware/camera/scanner portion as you mentioned glassgrl it does not show a scanner as an option at all. Will downloading the driver bring that up?
I can use my crappy digital camera if I have to but I really prefer to use my scanner for the main items that i sell. Printer is essential, scanner is not but preferred.
So if I can figure this part out I think I"ll be satisfied for now.
My Kodak digital camera program still works (but the camera sucks, I need a new one) and my Dazzle Endicia program works. It's just this printer/scanner that has given me so much trouble.

is that the new XP driver?
Then try clicking on the Camera and Scanners in the control panel and use the "add device" option.
yeah I know you said it only shows HP cameras. Well you're going to want to use the disc you have (or downloaded rather). So know where you've downloaded that to.

Hope it works. Cross your fingers.

Well I just spent almost 2 hours online with HP Support. I turned off the pop ups in Firefox and was able to get the chat to work that way.
They tried all sorts of things to get my printer/scanner to work. For some reason my system won't recognize the scanner although it recognizes the printer and the printer works. If I had to pick one to use, it's the printer but I dont know what I'm going to do without that scanner. I'm probably going to have to get a new one when I get my income tax refund because I almost have to have one.
They had me remove the USB Composite Device in hopes that the install wizard would pick it up and it did ~ but it still has an error when I try to scan.
I'm about had for the night with this. I just want to sit at the comuter and relax and I haven't been able to do that for 2 days now.
I can't figure out why one part of a all in one sysmte would work and the other part wouldn't. That just doesnt' make sense to me.

exasperating to say the least, i'm sure ...
I hope all works out for you nicely in the end ....
What do you use your scanner for most often?

here's why I haven't installed XP2. And I do believe in Windows updates, just not this one...yet.

And Helga, your problems ARE XP2 related. DO call.

I downloaded XP2 and promptly removed it. I had all kinds of problems. My computer would shut down on its own (a problem with EZ CD Creator 5 - not compatible with XP2) and start on its own. I'm not going to reinstall the update.
I found a fantastic program and if you have XP, I highly recommend it. It's called Tune Up Utilities 2004. You can get a free trial at http://www.tune-up.com. I used the 30 day trial up and bought the program. It's taken care of all my problems!!
Hope everything straightens itself up for you!

I like everything else about this XP2. After all the problems I had on this computer I seem to have none of them on this one. No churning or grinding with IE, no hangs with Foxfire. My computer runs fast and I do like some of the fetures.
what is so unbelieveably frustrating is that not all programs work with XP2. This whole HP thing just sucks and the thought of having to buy a new scanner just because of this dumb thing is ridiculous. I scan most of my smaller items because they are made of fabric and it shows the detail. That and my digi cam sucks until I can buy a new one so I rely on that scanner for nice clear close shots of my items. without the printer I would be lost. The scanner is an inconvenience.
I will call XP2 glassgrl this week. Right now I'm on a slight break from this frustration. I've gotten nothing done online for 2 days now and I'm way far behind.
Thanks for all your help

Helga
1) You should NOT have to buy another scanner because you installed XP2.
2) Your scanner/camera is USB which means it is a lot newer model than most of us use.
3) It is my firm belief that this is XP2 related and not XP. I have not had a problem installing anything with XP.
4) Ask the techies at Microsoft how to uninstall XP2 and try installing the printer/scanner with just plain old XP and I'll bet it works.
5) Your printer/scanner worked with Firefox AND windows 98. That means it IS an XP2 problem.
And for anybody else that might be wondering, you CAN choose not to install XP2 even with the automatic updates. You choose "notify me but let me choose which updates to install" & then "custom install".
Now whenever I completely toss my cookies and clean my cache with Window Washer & Spybot...the next time that Windows has an automatic update it will show XP2 update again under Custom Install. Then I have to click Custom Install and highlight, right click or not choose the box (can't remember exactly) the XP2 update and also click the popup box that says "never tell me again about this update". That lasts as long as the cookie does.

I DISAGREE about SP2 -- all it is is a bunch of SECURITY UPDATES that MS threw into one big download -- THAT'S all it is...
One can avoid it at one's own peril, but ye be unpatched from that time forward...
I installed SP2 on my desktop (XP HOME) & on my laptop (XP PRO) without any problems what-so-ever...
The pop-up blocker can be a nusiance -- just click the yellow bar & choose yer poison...
Everybody yacks about security -- this is the #1 most major security adjustment MS has ever made at a great expense on their part...
OTOH: when I bought my present PC 19 mos ago, XP had just come out & most of my hardware was INCOMPATIBLE with it because the companies were NOT going to develop NEW XP drivers for existing hardware -- VISIONEER was one example, plus my ALL-IN-ONE had a DRIVER, but the nifty software that came with it was worthless, so I had to use the bare-bones SCAN&PRINT WIZARD in XP...
Again, ALL SP2 is is a very large group of SECURITY PATCHES...

IOW, Helga:
Yer hardward may be OK, but yer 3rd-party SW may be screwing up things...
Did you install ANY 3rd-party SW that came along with yer ALL-IN-ONE?
If YES, then I would UNINSTALL it & just use the SCAN&PRINT WIZARD in XP which is what I had to do with my ALL-IN-ONE!
It is very bare-bones, but it does allow you to use yer scanner & yer printer...

tom - LARGE is the keyword here for the XP2 update. It's so big that my computers said I didn't have enough room to install it.
Bloated.
You shouldn't have to go out and buy all new accesories because of your OS "update" makes it all invalid.
IMHO 99.9% of everything works fine with XP...which is one of the major reasons why people don't upgrade their OS...because of incompatible programs.
Have you ever looked to see what won't run under XP2?
Microsoft just would LOVE for you to go out and buy more new stuff from them.
Firewall? Got one.
PopUp Blocker? Got one.
Security updates? Got those too.

When I bought my New puter with XP, it would not recognize my scanner.
A cannon with USB, had the driver disc, still wouldn't accept it.
So at this time I have no scanner, don't matter cause I never used it.
But will need to buy an XP compatible one if I decide to ever use one.

Helga and glassgrl ... if you will be corresponding with Microsoft regarding their last year security patch update, it is referred to as SP2 (Service Pack 2), rather than 'xp2' ...
Just thought I would mention that to be helpful ... now I'll go away.
Have a great week everybody... hope we all have BIG bucks in the Bid Column.
