Niel...I just checked and the storm you are experiencing now is very localized and should start subsiding in about 1/2 hour.

Toasted...Ophelia is scheduled to land late tomorrow night or early Wednesday as a Cat-1 hurricane, most likely close to the border with N.C. The outer bands of the system are already coming ashore. You can keep an eye on it's progress with thei image from the Morehead City, N.C. radar site. This image will update every 6 minutes. Be sure to hit ctrl+F5 whenever you load it to make sure you have the latest update:

Thanks Sparks !! Were not even getting any rain yet. Small gust of wind around 10-15. We lost power around 12:30 for like 20 seconds. Shows how well our power holds up around here. lol I always joke that you could sneeze and lose power...well ya can !! I would never stay here for a Cat 1 or higher as we'd be without power for days or even weeks if the storm was bad enough.

Just stock up on batteries, lot's of 'em. Unless you live on the coast, the most you're likely to see is a bunch of wind and maybe enough rain to water your yard. Most of the moisture is on the right side of the hurricane and will fall in the ocean. The prediction is that this storm will hit the coast of N.C. at an angle, and exit into the ocean. Because it's moving so slow, those in the eastern part of the state will see it for quite awhile. If a couple events in the atmosphere come together at the right time, this storm could be the only one in over a century that makes landfall 3 times with Florida not being involved. We'll worry about you now, and in about 4 days worry about those in New Jersey or New York City where the NHC bookies are mentioning as a possible landfall #2. Nova Scotia is 3rd on the hit list.

You probably are already aware of this, but I forgot to mention that the temperature differential and wind shear caused by a storm such as this can spawn isolated tornadoes outside and on the fringes of the impact area. Be sure to keep a portable radio within listening distance for any alerts or warnings. These tornadoes are usually small and short lived, but dangerous nevertheless.

Well....I am in Wilmington and the schools have closed and a lot of the workplaces. There isn't much going on right now but projected to get worse overnight. It isn't a real bad storm but sounds like a lot of rain...I am 3 miles from the ocean so will get most of what comes in. I have always lived here but never get used to them. I remember Hazel (I was very young). We went to a school that my uncle worked for (it was a 2 story school) and the roof blew off.

oh no parkman ! I'll have you in my thoughts all week now. I hope the rain is not bad and the storm picks up speed so it doesn't just sit there for days like its been doing.

Parkman...Ophelia has now been upgraded to a Cat 1 hurricane again. Landfall for the eye is expected about 2 PM tomorrow, but hurricane force winds extend 60 miles from the center of the eye and tropical force winds 160 miles, so you will be seeing bad weather before landfall. Here's the link for the NWS office in Wilmington. They will have the latest updates on conditions for your city in the short term forecast links on the left side of the page.

No word from Parkman in Wilmington, N.C., so I suppose he's probably without power like a lot of others. Ophelia is pounding the hell out of the N.C. coastline and everything up to 50 miles inland, but it should move north in the next 24-48 hours. The track for the last couple days showed this hurricane to move northeast out into the Atlantic after it leaves N.C., but that has changed as of the 11:00 PM update by NHC. Because a specific atmospheric will not occur when and where it was predicted, Ophelia will stay close to the coast as a tropical storm and possily target New England for its next visit. Those of you further north, especially in Md., N.Y., N.J. and around Hyannis, Ma. may want to follow thr track forecast on the map on page one of this thread. Here is an excerpt from the NHC latest update:

<<THE INITIAL MOTION IS 060/6. MODEL GUIDANCE HAS SHIFTED QUITE A BIT
TO THE LEFT...WITH THE NOGAPS...GFDL...GFS...AND UKMET TAKING
OPHELIA CLOSE ENOUGH TO THREATEN NEW ENGLAND AND NOVA SCOTIA WITH
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS. THIS APPEARS TO BE DUE TO THE TROUGH
COMING OUT OF THE ROCKIES BEING DEEPER OVER THE EASTERN UNITED
STATES...AND A MORE PERSISTENT HIGH PRESSURE NORTH OF BERMUDA.
GIVEN THE CONSISTENT SHIFT IN ALL THE GUIDANCE...I HAVE ADJUSTED
THE TRACK TO THE LEFT...BUT FURTHER ADJUSTMENTS IN THAT DIRECTION
DOWN THE ROAD MAY BE REQUIRED.

A little off topic sparkz, but some amazing pictures of Katrina making landfall. Thought you might like to see them.

Those are absolutely stunning McJane. If those pictures were shown on television the next time a category 4 or 5 hurricane approaches the coast, I bet there would be a lot fewer people tempted to "ride it out". I found some pictures of Katrina taken from the international space station. I didn't post them here because the high resolution pics were 800K to 1 Mb each, and Katrina was so large, it was hard to recognize what it was.

Hello everyone and Thanks for your concern. Everything is fine at my home and I am just grateful that Ophelia wasn't a Katrina. It lasted a long time as it is such a slow moving storm but it is about 2:30 on Thursday morning and it is still raining but no wind. Thank God that thus far there is no lives lost. I live approx 3 miles from Wrightsville Beach and they got right much damage but most of the damage in Wilmington is trees down and shingles blown off. The Brunswick County beaches which are one county over seemed to have sustained more damage and a lot of flooding.

I am down at Myrtle Beach- big big winds and gust almost all day yesterday , rained all day Tuesday and lots yesterday.
Power is on and the city is alive and well.

I heard that nearly 200,OOO have lost power in NC.

NC is my home, I go to MB at least once every month. We have a small place here.
-----------------------------------------

I will always keep in mind those that simply went to work on a Tuesday morning......

Sorry to disappoint y'all, but those pictures are NOT of Katrina. I was sent those exact same photos more tha six months ago. Sent to me by an Australian friend. They were taken in Australia and they are of a cyclone. Look at them closely and you will see that's not a hurricane.

Hello again!!! Those pics are awesome wherever they came from.
While I was sitting here in my nice (unflooded) house yesterday watching 80 mph winds blow by I was thinking how horrible it must have been for the people in Mississippi and Louisiana to have winds of over 150 with gusts up to 200 mph. We have just been out and cleaned up the yard..lots of leaves and limbs but no trees down at my house. I am just thankful it was Ophelia and not another Katrina. We have short periods of no electricity but nothing over 5 mins. I did lose my road runner for a few hours but that was the worse thing that happened to me and my family.

sparkz, they certainly are stunning & beautiful & terrifying.

niel & parkman they were emailed to me yesterday from a friend in Texas. No message, just the pics & subject which was.
"Amazing Pictures of Katrina Making Landfall"

georgiapeach, I'm inclined to agree with you. The wide open spaces didn't look right to me. I wondered where it made landfall, but there was no mention of that.

I did a search on Google pics trying to solve the mystery, no luck.

Parkman and Deur1...Glad to hear you're both o.k. Looks like it's pulling farther away from you, though it's still poundung the coast north of you. The next official NHC update should be coming in about half an hour. I'm anxious to see the new track forecast. Hopefully it will be out to sea, but there is still concern that New England is at risk.

glassgrl, sounds good to me, lots of wind & rain, not storm clouds like the pictures.

Yes, they are spectacular & now I'm beginning to think we are looking at nine different storms.

Hopefully Ophelia will head out to sea or fizzle within the next 24 hours. Since this storm has been so difficult to predict, they are covering all bases by issueing a tropical storm watch for the Mass. cape. Here is their wording:

<<ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN UNFAVORABLE FOR ANY
INTENSIFICATION TO OCCUR. THE BIG QUESTIONS ARE HOW FAST WILL
OPHELIA WEAKEN AND WHEN WILL EXTRATROPICAL TRANSITION OCCUR.
OPHELIA IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE WARMER GULFSTREAM
TO AT LEAST KEEP SOME DEEP CONVECTION GOING IN THE EASTERN
SEMICIRCLE FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS. HOWEVER...ONCE OPHELIA REACHES
ABOUT 40N LATITUDE WHERE THE OCEAN TEMPERATURES DECREASE
SIGNIFICANTLY...THEN TRANSITION OVER TO A FORMIDABLE EXTRATROPICAL
LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM SHOULD BEGIN. HOWEVER...DUE TO THE UNCERTAINTY
ON EXACTLY WHEN THIS PHASE CHANGE WILL OCCUR...A TROPICAL STORM
WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS>>
