Oh, Jack, I hear ya! My BF, Ken, went to Sears Dental to have a root canal done and they botched it! He had extreme pain. He finally went to another dentist who had to eventually remove the tooth. I told him he may as well go to WalMart for a heart transplant as to go to Sears for a root canal. Sears may know tools, but denistry is another story! I don't know, there's just something that doesn't seem right if a dentist has to operate out of Sears.

Another suggestion, my Dad, if he were still with us, would know exactly who to call. He was a parish priest and received many requests for help from parishioners and non-parishioners. There are many compassionate endodontists and many of them are church-going. If you can't get help from organizations or the emergency room (which I think might be your best bet), try going the church route.

I dont understand why this semi retired dentist of yours cant do anything for you sooner?
Why do you have to suffer weeks of pain when he can do something ??

Tom, my very dear friend, I'm heartbroken to hear you are suffering so.

What an A-hole that dentist is. When you recover write to the ADA about him.

If the percs aren't working you are building up a tolerence. I know your often on heavy pain meds. GG is right a small & I mean small drink will boost the effect.

I have your address, remember I bought a scale from you, & will have a check in the mail tomorrow. Or if PayPal is faster let me know.

I'm so glad you turned to your friends on VD for help. I would be hurt if you didn't.

You can always email me if you need something. I'll always be here for you two.

Hugs & kisses to Ralphie.

Jane

I know how that pain feels Tom.
I don't have much but I will contribute as well. It took me 2 years to pay off the loan I had to take out for my teeth work.
I feel like having them all pulled and just go with dentures!

Blessings this season!

Tom,

I'm so sorry to hear of your pain! I have had 4 root canals and they are not fun, but they always healed fine, and after 3 or 4 days, I was without pain. So, you're right ... You're friend botched it. I wish I could help out financially, but unfortunately, I'm behind in my bills and struggling to catch up. However, I do know that you can go to the emergency room. Don't worry about the bill. Some things are more important, like your health. Go and get some relief and worry about the bill later. If it's serious enough, they will call in an oral surgeon and do the work right then and there. I do know that some hospitals have charitable organizations that help out with patients that don't have insurance and are unable to pay the bill. But the important thing is to get treatment first, and then worry about the bill later.

I wish I could be of more help. I'm so sorry that you are suffering.

Diane

tom~

I sent you a little something... Paypal said you aren't registered. Let me know if I need to change something...

It's possible you also have an abcess as well. That kind of pain is unbelieveable.

I had to have one pulled in April. Since it took 2 days to get in, I held whiskey in my mouth on the tooth. It took the edge off. If you're on narcotics, you can spit the whiskey out.

TO EVERYBODY:

So many wonderful and generous folks here have been helping me out over the past 24 hours that I'm really humbled by this board.

I've tried to reply to everybody, but if I didn't, PLEASE remind me as I find my MSN mail reader confusing & I may have missed somebody with a THANK YOU note...

Tomorrow, I will start a THANK YOU thread.

The email address (if you wish to contact me) is:

[email protected]

which is also my PayPal address...

Yesterday morning when I got up, I was just about ready to pack it in, feeling hopeless. Between the gut and the teeth, the past 6 weeks had really gotten to me, and I was at the end of my rope.

The overwhelming KINDNESS that you folks here have showered upon me has brought me back from the brink, and I don't know how I will ever be able to properly say THANK YOU...

Just...from me & Ralphie:

THANK YOU, EVERYBODY!

well h*ll tom we're all family over here aren't we? isn't Christmas about family? so glad that you humbled yourself to reach out to us in your time of need and that I know we all feel so good to be able to help someone we care about.

BUT WAIT! I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING!

I was thinking about my own horror story of dentists and I won't share it with you here. I will tell you that I can't go to a "normal" dentist but only an oral surgeon that will knock me out before they even say open wide. I did find one dentist that will prescribe Demerol tabs before I go in but I digress....

Anyway - my husband was having severe tooth pain but he couldn't tell which tooth it was and so he went to the dentist. IT WASN'T TOOTH PAIN! It was infected sinuses! The dentist wisely gave him an antibiotic and sent him home.

This was after he had had all of his cavities filled in Alabama and went to a new dentist down here in Florida. The new dentist said that he had more cavities and all the old fillings had to come out. He told her no way and she made the mistake of yelling at him and calling him stupid in her office. My husband is a master controller (air traffic) and spends his days telling people where to go

So he went back to his dentist in Alabama and that guy re-checked & said everything was fine and not to go back to that female dentist.

So the final smart dentist with the brains enough not to try and make more money than he should told him sinus infection. Could it be possible that's what is wrong with you? My DH swore he had about 3 teeth that were hurting.

Tom, I am SO sorry to hear about your pain, please don't feel bad about asking for help, we all have to do that sometime. Like Diane, I would love to help financially, but with 2 of our kids in financial straits, we are about cleaned out. One would have been out on the street with 2 babies without our help.
What I can offer is some advice. Look up some churches in your area and call and explain your situation. My husband is a pastor, and anyone asking for help, and he is right there. I remember one very cold Christmas day about 35 years ago when we were ready with our 4 little children about to open presents, when a young couple came to our door with a very sick baby, and their car wouldn't start. My husband tried for a long time to get it started, and in the end, took them 30 miles to the hospital and was gone most of the way. There ARE compassionate people out there. When you are in a lot of pain, you need someone else to think for you.
We were once in WV in our old car with 4 young children, and we broke down, and had to get towed and the car repaired, and it took all the money that we had. Half an hour later we broke down again. We called a local pastor and he came out with a friend and towed our car, they put us up in their home for 5 days, got the car repaired, and gave us money to get home. They have been great friends ever since.
If the first one doesn't help, keep trying, you need help! I will be praying for you.

Oh, gosh, Amber can I relate! I had savings for emergencies like my lay off. However, I helped my daughter and granddaughter out so much the savings are gone!! Even when they're grown, they cost us money. LOL!

What Jack says. I had a root canal and a crown for the same tooth done on the same day. It has held with little or no problems; HOWEVER, I failed to do my research before I had the root canal done.
Next time, I'd have it pulled and do an implant.

Having said that, the key word in the medical field is P-A-I-N. If your doctor or dentist does understand this word, move on. I would not attempt to go back to this dentist. I would not make any verbal threats of future action but I would do a handwritten complaint letter to the Board of Dentistry in your State. You will probably be able to settle for the money you paid to him. He won't be happy but he'll learn. (of course, after you've had treatment and your better)

there has to be another dentist. How can you go back to a professional who has let you live this way in pain for so long?
