Turns out all the warnings here about WindowsVista were right. After all my big talk about how well Vista was working now in my shiny new computer, I've encountered a major glitch. If you upload files of photos to image hosting in Vendio, read on.
The geniuses at Microsoft simply removed the "publish to the web" capability. Their actual quote is that "no one used it for web publishing anymore."
I've asked the Vendio moderators and their answer is that there's no solution at present, that we must UPLOAD MANUALLY ONE AT A TIME (Sure--with 100 or more to do!?).
Everything else in my new computer is working well now, as I bragged before, but now I'm eating humble pie.
And I have my OLD computer plugged in nearby and will move my modem to it when I need to upload a batch of pix to Vendio. Grrrrrrrr.

Thanks for that link, Tom. We're seriously considering returning this Vista thing and asking for the XP.
We're just reeling from all of this. The management of Vendio must be upset, too, given that they stand to lose some business.

Classic, you are not mistaken. From Wikipedia:
The band initially consisted of Steve Marriott (formerly of The Small Faces; lead vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist), Peter Frampton (from Herd; lead guitarist), Greg Ridley (from Spooky Tooth; bassist) and Jerry Shirley (from Valkyrie; drummer).

I have always maintained that anyone who does serious computing -- which should include eBay merchants -- needs to have both a Mac and a PC.
Interestingly, this makes me the target of hate from both Mac and PC users.
It's sometimes rough being the lone voice of reason but hey, I do it all for you guys.

It has been my rule of thumb for years. I never buy or use the first version of anything. Whether or not the computer is a MAC or PC (I have both) I never use (unless I am forced to for some reason) and version 1.X whenever possible.

Okay, people, here's a temporary solution we're using. I post it here in case someone needs it in the future.
For now, we've figured out a way to upload a folder of photos to Vendio Image Hosting. This works only if there's another working computer nearby that's still on WINDOWS XP (thank God).
We loaded the folder of 75 photos onto a zip disk, pulled up Image Loading into the second computer, and transferred the photos into Vendio via "publish to web" link there. Voila.
But clunky and involves a walk to another room. Back into the dark ages for us, for now.
I fervently wish Vendio had posted a warning about Vista to all its users when this problem first reared its ugly head.

Note that I don't use vendio but self host, but I'm curious about using an ftp utility with Vista to upload directly into your vendio host? Or is this a silly question?
posted on April 21, 2007 09:22:54 AM new
I already asked that question, birgittaw, in another thread but was told by Vendio CS that ftp isn't an option (yet) for Vendio publishing. They're considering it.
I, like you, self-host and for those of us who do, the notion of not being able to transfer files in bulk just seems insane. ftp is so easy.

Why don't you remove Vista and install XP?
The Vista ready machines are great with XP installed. I have a new Dell (2gb + 1tb memory) which came Vista ready with XP installed. I never installed Vista, because I did not want to go through the problems you are experiencing. Best decision I ever made.

Kozersky, interesting suggestion. Thanks.
Why don't I quit Vendio and have my photos hosted elsewhere? Because the total package I have with Vendio, besides costing very little monthly, is the easiest to use, much easier than listing through eBay and paying extra for the 3 - 8 photos I use for every auction.
I considered that when we first had the problems with Image hosting this week but quickly discarded it.

Adele, we don't mean you should use eBay photo hosting. We mean you should use file storage on an ISP.
My ISP, Hurricane Electric, has a basic virtual hosting plan that costs $9.95 a month. For that they host your own domain, several dozen POP mailboxes, 1 gb file storage and a whole raft of programs and services. And of course your own Web page.
Snagging a domain is cheap and easy through GoDaddy.
With a gigabyte of photo storage, it'll be years before you even have to think about deleting anything. As I recall, the same cannot be said for the big V.
At some point, serious eBay sellers discover they're paying too much for auction management systems and not getting the kind of responsiveness they deserve for what they pay.

Fluff is right. I don't use Vendio for hosting pics either. I found it much more reliable to not use then in favor my ISP as well.

Under my Vendio plan, I get 10.24 MB of image hosting. 1 Gigabyte = 1,024 Megabytes - in other words I get 10 GB image hosting. I have a gazillion images stored and have used less than 4,000 MB (3 GB). Because my image hosting falls in line with my Vendio usage (monthly subscription+FVF), the image hosting is free. I get quite a bit for my Vendio $ - the ability to schedule listings (10 cents each at ebay last I checked), unlimited images in listings, ability to search closed and unsold items by title or ebay number, ability to search images by title (or portions of title) in addition to listing and post-sale functions and a store make Vendio a good deal for someone like me and I am a very serious seller.

HATE ???
DO you really think anyone here is that shallow?
People's opinions on Computers or image hosting , how we should run our business would never conjure up HATE. I just take as a grain of salt.Actually from time to time(much like a broken clock which is correct twice a day) I agree with what is posted.
I am not particularly fond of condescending
behavior. I do not hate folks like that though. Annoying YES, cause to hate NO!
Ps.
Have and happy day, it is a good day to be nice to someone. Speak to a stranger, smile , commend someone, call an old friend .
Think of those that could just use a hug.

Neglus: I'm 100% with you on your reasons for staying with Vendio. I've never seen a better offer anywhere that would give me the easy-to-read list of my current auctions, pending auctions, closed auctions, all on my simple page--instead of eBay's hard-to-read listings that don't include hits! Etc. etc. And my photo hosting, too, is free or nearly free every month. Such a deal.

Neglus, Roadsmith, I do not pay a dime for hosting either.
BTW -- I AM a serious eBay seller.
I have tried other venues but stay with Vendio.
My ONLY complaint with VD is special listing days . WE did get a 24 hr notice so it should go smoother .
I will not fully participate, I did not last time either. I rarely do auction -style .
I have about 10 pricey items I may list , otherwise, it is business as usual.

Those post are not HATE . They are a group of folks that share and care .

No, dear. Those posts are shallow.
In a forum that is expressly for the discussion of eBay business, demonstrably few of the present crowd are actually interested in learning about eBay and how to sell and improving their businesses (and thus their incomes, and thus their lives).
I'm going to repeat that: Learning about eBay can improve your life. Implementing what you've learned and measuring the results will improve your life.
I have never understood why the touchy-feelies dominate the eBay Outlook. There is a perfectly fine forum right on this very web site for "sharing and caring". Why not use that and get out of the way of those who want to brainstorm ideas for sales and marketing on eBay?
Every day there are more and more people who use eBay to make a living or to provide much-needed supplemental income. Nearly all of those people are sole proprietors: one-person businesses. Did you ever stop to think what even a small process improvement can mean to the bottom line for a sole proprietor? I have. I've seen it work. Have you ever analyzed your work processes to make them more efficient? How much time do you spend sitting in front of a computer waiting for a response, and have you ever multiplied those seconds of latency by the occurrences in a day to realize how much time you are wasting, just staring at the screen? How much more money could you make if you could reclaim some of that time?
A couple of years ago we ran studies using a row of computers. We found that simply by listing in real-time and moving from computer to computer, we could list well over 60 items an hour. If you have graphed your sales over the course of a day and found what time periods work best for you (say, 6 to 9 am or 5 to 8 pm), you can put up a large number of auctions in real-time and not have to pay for an auction management service or to schedule future listings.
We now return you to your regular diet of vegetable lasagna recipes, weather forecasts and computer-religion wars.
