Ahhh yes.....remember the good old days when a new site seemed like such a wonderful adventure? All that wild abandon......all the excitement of a new exploration........
Who knew there were snakes in the grass?
Not much you can do but warn them and then wait for them to come back.
Hopefully they will fare better than some of the 'old timers' did.

...Paul must find it ironic too, that in the space of a year, things have come a full circle. I remember the optimism a year ago. It's spooky, reading the same phrases now. Wonder if the new crowd will become as cynical and disenchanted as the old crowd was.

The notes are all in my head, Lotsafuzz. I have a fluky memory for certain kinds of posts... There is one AW thread made in July 1999 that haunts me to this day. I used to periodically do a site search with different key words, trying to find it again, hoping that I didn't remember it correctly. I can't do that now of course with all the old threads wiped out.

It was a thread started by a AW regular, someone who posted fairly frequently (on both fluff and serious threads) and who had a very outgoing personality. She was feeling uneasy and wanted advice because she thought she might be being stalked by one of her eBay buyers. She thought that the buyer might even have visited her home in her absence (leaving something on her porch for her to find, I think).
Anyway, this thread was in July and sometime in September this poster just abruptly dropped from sight. A couple of months later, someone commmented on her disappearance and wondered what had happened to her. A number of people responded and I was very surprised that no one at all had heard from her and one person with whom she had been particularly friendly mentioned that his e-mails to her had bounced back.
What haunts me is that I recall from the July thread was that she was not given very good advice. One poster, for example, just told her that her story just points out the reasons why an eBay seller should use a post office box.
I know that posters drop out of sight all the time. In this instance I just would have felt better if I could have found that thread again and seen that someone, anyone, had urged her to go to the police. I know I didn't do so and I wish I had.

I don't remember that thread but I can understand why it would be disturbing. There have been quite a few threads along those general lines though and I think that better advice is usually given now. Surely if there were any further suspicious occurrences, she would have contacted the police. Most likely, she just tired of the boards or decided not to continue with eBay.

I get the feeling that you all are thinking of a different place than what Christina had in mind. I have been there, and I like it. They have actually put out a formal welcome on their webpage to all AW members...so if you think you have the right one, go check for a welcome. If there's a welcome, that's where she is. If there's not a welcome, then you are thinking of some place else. The welcome is located on the upper right side of their main page, and also on the bottom. I just get the sense that you were all burned by a service other than the one to which she is referring, because I have seen a SURPRISINGLY large number of former AW-ers there.

No, Kimbonovich, the place with the welcome message is the same place referred to above as being owned by Paul. The disappointments and upheavals were the result of that former ownership, so perhaps it is indeed a different place.
Adding to the confusion is the "train" reference. The train, which also had a diner by the way, has recently been sold. It was reopened by the new owners briefly but is now closed again until the beginning of April, according to their front page.
