Hi kraftdinner,
The quote I posted is from a blacklight poster I remember seeing back in the late sixties or early seventies.
Yeah, I have/had friends like those you describe. I'm not sure if they were really THAT funny or smart, or if I just THOUGHT they were at the time.
I have a hard time remembering.

MIVONA: Thanks for the clarification to my post. Now would you please write your facts to The History Channel and have them clean up their documentary? Yes, I realized it was opium instead of heroin the next day after I wrote it, but I felt that it was such a negligable misnomer that it didn't bare any effort to correct it. Thank goodness that you're here On Watch to make sure every detail posted is correct!

RM, kraftdinner,
There was an underground comic back in the late 60's called "The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers". The quote cited was/is their family motto. It was one of ny favorites.

Should Marijuana Be Legalized?
So much angst...so little need for it. It's not addictive, as alcohol is. It need not attract criminals who want huge profits. Anyone can grow it for free.
It's probably the liquor lobbies standing in the way. Who'd need their wares? Not to mention...how would the gov't tax my garden?
Duh.

You are welcome, Borillar. The history books here refer to the episodes as "The Opium Wars".
When there is so much mis-information around about drugs, it is important to be clear about the substance in question. Opium and heroin are two completely different substances in usage, even if originally derived from the same plant.

Hi xardon.....I'm pretty sure I still have one of those comics (I saved everything!)....I think Timothy Leary's in it....I'll let you know if I find it. I also have a copy of "High Times" from around the same era......way too funny for words!
And isn't that the truth toke! I would sure like to see booze done away with more than I would with pot. Booze seems to have more of a negative effect on people that can make them angry & aggressive. I've never seen anyone who smokes pot even raise their voice!
I know that pot can do things with your memory, but that's only short term.
It can make you hungry, which is a bonus for some people.
It can probably cause lung cancer if smoked chronically, but other than these 3 things, I can't understand what the harm is in the drug.
My friend (Mr. Knowledge) and his wife have been smoking it for at least 25 years and I don't see any big decline in their mental capabilities, etc.....
Does anyone actually know what the "real" dangers are with smoking pot????

Well, for starters:
-getting fired from your job for failing a drug test.
-getting arrested.
-going to jail.

xardon,
Right you are! I forgot that phrase was the Freak Bro's moto. LOL! I have some of those comics and some Zap comics too. I have a pretty large collection of "hippie" stuff.
I also agree that the real dangers of pot smoking are the legal and employment ramifications. I don't believe that moderate pot smokers are in any severe health danger.
I think that keeping pot illegal, keeps people buying from dealers who also sell other, more dangerous drugs. So, in effect, the laws against pot actually help put pot smokers in the same vacinity with harder drugs. Whereas, if people could grow their own pot, they wouldn't be buying it from "drug dealers".

I believe you are right, Ray.
I once thought legalization would have occurred before the arrival of the 21st Century. The anti-drug industry would survive without the inclusion of pot among the prohibited drugs. I really think that simple stubborness and a reluctance to admit error is all that prevents such action. Unfortunately, I believe that seemingly small impediment will continue to be the stumbling block to enlightened legislation for a good many years to come.

dubya wants his sister to be protected so she has no access to pot because she has no self control.
Other people want the same thing for alcohal.
I personally wish they would not allow idiots to drive automobiles.
If we make everything safe to the lowest common denominator there is no freedom left.
I know plenty of people that should never be allowed to handle a gun. I can even tell you about a few who should really not be allowed to run a lawn mower.
My wife stopped a neighbor lady just in time who took the gasoline can into the kitchen and was going to clean her husbands greasy tools off as a surprise. - On the table next to a gas stove with pilot lights. Boy would he have been surprised!! Who messed up and sold gasoline to these people?

Actually, your corrections miss the point of the history lesson and the corrections in that sense have a negligible, if not an unregisterable, impact. And if you think that the interests of the British Empire and the East Inda Company and its players were not really one and the same, then I suggest that you do a bit more reading.
In the meantime, I have several other works for you to go over and clarify . . .

Now, if I just had a little pot.........
I might even become a Republican of the
compassionate conservative variety.
If anybody wants to fight or make nasty remarks about the above
statement, please stand in line.

Things I Learned From A Conversation With A Member Of Our Local Task Force Agency:
1. Approximately 75% of the people in my town smoke pot.
2. Quite a few less are into much harder drugs.
3. Most people smoking pot in my town sit in a corner and eat munchies while laughing hysterically at themselves - and others.
4. Most people doing harder drugs in my town are out robbing convenience stores and now drug stores.
5. Most officers in my town would prefer that pot would be legalized with the penalties doubled for harder drugs. Then they could spend their time stopping the extra crime.

Things I Learned From Reading Our Local Newspaper:
1. Our local police force are fighting a manditory drug testing addition to their contract.
2. A few years ago 3 members of our local police force - and their wives - were caught "swimming" in the local fountain in the middle of Central Park. In the middle of downtown.
Did I mention they were in their birthday suits?
And you thought Johnstown was a boring, depressing little town in the Rust Belt. You thought wrong, guys!
