How about "firefighter"?

Webster's Dictionary; " help (help) v.t. to aid' . . . 'helpmate n. an assistant, a partner; a wife or husband. Also helpmeet [O.E.helpna]".

Maybe all that being 'angry' got in the way of absorbing the variety and richness that the English language is capable of.

I sure hope she doesn't have any daughters to influence. Gives me the shudders.

Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Not everyone will be familiar with archaic language, nor could be expected to. When was the last time you, or anyone else you know used gorgayse (gorgeous), ordal (ordeal), sandesman (sandman), scuttled-butt (scuttlebut), ezel (easel), bankrupture (bankrupt) or the many other extinct forms of words in use today?

bunnicula: Just being alive is a risk: a risk that we face everyday; it is something that we all learn to live with -- we could drop dead at any moment for no reason whatsoever. It happens, and there's not a damned thing that you can do about it either.

But going out of your way to seek danger is a different matter. That isn't the same at all with working at home or on the "normal" job! No, you actively attract danger: not just a reasonable amount, but PLENTY of it! Balance between the thrills of a dangerous mountain climb and how thrilled your kids would be at burying your cold corpse, I'd say it was awfully selfish of a parent to endanger themselves UNNECESSARILY.

If you want to live dangerously - don't have kids.

I wrote to her:

"One of the most ill-conceived things I have read in a long time, akin to some kind of anti-abortion tract, or a harkening back to the "old days", when men were men, and women were defined simply by their biology.

What about the deaths of fathers, and the emotional as well as financial impact on children left behind? Sure, they would still have their mothers for comfort, but no dads for support (particularly in your narrowly-defined roles of "nurturing mum" and "working dad".

Because, after all, if there are children, the mother MUST stay at home, huh? Nothing more adventurous than walking to school with them.

Bollocks!"

Her response:

<< Nothing more adventurous than walking to school with them. >>

No, because the REAL mothers would home school their children! LOL

Carol

Oh PLEASE!

So now we are not only not supposed to participate in anything dangerous, we are supposed to be pre-destined to stay at home...

Women are more likely to suffer fatal heart attacks for one simple reason that was hammered into us during paramedic school.

Doctors (male doctors) have always tended to dismiss women's complaints of 'not feeling well, tired, etc' as female problems. They ignore what they would investigate as potential heart problems in men. This is not my opinion, this is really what happens. Then when the woman does have a massive heart attack, they assume it's 'out of the blue'.

Educating doctors about this is being emphasized more now, but many older doctors still tend to write off women's complaints as menopause or depression. Another case of us women not being taken seriously!

Borillar,

I wouldn't personally choose to do dangerous stuff, but I really think this boils down to a "choice" thing. Only the individuals involved can make the decisions for themselves and their loved ones.

I may not think that it is right, you may not, but what right have we to impose our choices on someone else? Yes, their children may be bereaved - they know that and their kids now that. But kids lose their parents all the time through other stuff, and survive.

It's life.

She replied to me that she fixes lunch for all the men where she works and brings in home made cookies.

It is called role playing.

Awwww....

No matter. Their thesis is flawed and extremely weak. If this is the best that can be mustered Shawna should have a great drive in the WC racing circut.

To use the argument presented:

If I am trapped in a burning building...I don't give a damn which gender my rescuer is just so long as someone does it. Therefore, Moms should be racing.

So the debate has ended.

At least she can no longer claim, if ever she could without lying, that she has 100% readership support for her "position".

I'm beginning to think that "she" doesn't exist--that it is a man who wrote the article. If it is a woman she has either been lobotomized or subjected to rigorous brainwashing. Next we'll hear that "she" believes that women don't need education past grade school & certainly shouldn't attempt college (too hard on delicate female brain & assaults male ego)...

Could very well be bunnicula. Did not matter to me which gender wrote is...sexism is sexism and stupid is stupid.

It was my first encounter with that site and I think I will stick with others for credible racing information. But I am sure it won't matter to them.

Hmmm.....I wonder if teaching falls under the heading of "normal" jobs?

Guess I better never have kids, just in case I ever get shot.

Bunnicula,

I've always believed that all women are lobotomized at birth.

I will have you know that one time Ken posted I was a lady...now I would have to correct him.

I'm not blonde either.

Damn, I knew I did not want his opinion here...can't someone get him busy on some political thread or something?
