Until you explained to me that I am doing terrible, indeed I thought that I was doing great selling 60-70 items per month, from having between maybe 350 and 700 listings.
Also, certainly not to make myself any less mediocre than I am, but for the sake of analysis, while I sometimes sell $400 other times I have sold up to $700.
posted on October 24, 2000 05:28:53 PM new***yes, I certainly consider these to be excellent results, if nothing else in terms of sales as a percentage of listings. ***
Wherever I said this... whatever I meant... I can't find the reference... but:
When I list an item for the first time it is a listing. When it relists, I consider it the same listing. I don't count relists because they happen transparently to me. The notices go straight to my email trash.
Over time, I actually sell over 95% of my listings now. I am making good choices for the market, and very few things go into the box for the thrift store. I am not an accountant or a mathematician, but I know that I live in one of the most expensive areas of the country and I am able to own a house, a new car, and work at home doing something I love. It is not always easy and it doesn't always go my way, but it is just what I was looking for.

Edited to mention that this is a single income household -- mine.

Of the 175 items I listed, I sold oh, around 45, which is a percentage of about 25%, give or take a tad... If I eliminated the other 130, I'm averaging oh, over $55 a sale....
I wish I believed in your accounting system.
To me, reality is that the other 130 count, although I can't relist then forever feeless but for the 39.99 like you do at Amazon.

Very glad to be of service, you're welcome. I'm always willing to light a candle in the darkness. And the word I used repeatedly was "mediocre," not terrible. You don't need to put words in my mouth, there are enough there to last me 10 lifetimes.
Now I'm going to watch the Mets beat the Yankees. Seeya.

Please feel free!
Or, maybe it is because you are spending months bitterly discussing a site that you don't even list on. Give up the crusade and DO have a party. You'll live longer.

What we all should consider is that if Amazon is profitable for you, stick with it. If it is not, drop it and move elsewhere. It's that simple. It doesn't matter about sell thru percentage or anything else, as long as at the end of each month, your listings are profitable and you make a decent salary considering the time and effort you put into it. Amazon has been GREAT for me. My sales are currently around $3-4 K a month. I get at least double my cost on my items and make a slight profit on most of my shipping. I pay them $40 a month for the subscription and between $150-$250 for one click payments. That leaves a nice monthly net, that with a bit of work, I should be able to double over the next few months as I increase my listings and add a few new products. One thing I do get on Amazon is a large percentage of international bidders. I would guess this to be about 20% of my sales, which is much higher than my ebay sells. Sure I don't get the sell thru rate on Amazon as I do on ebay, but I also don't spend much money or time running my Amazon auctions. In my opinion, Amazon has better auction features than ebay has. Auto relist options, one click and easy image hosting to name a few. The merchant program is another valuable item in my opinion. Why ebay doesn't institute any of these is beyond me. The auction site should make it easier for their customers to use and offer useful tools for their sellers. In my opinion, Amazon does just that.

Sanest post I've read on this thread, especially the first sentence... Notice, all who read it, that this seller who is obviously doing well against the Amazon trend sees no reason to criticize a legion of others for the way they do things, the post is one that states his own experience and his own opinion...

Thank you to those who have posted that they too are doing well on Amazon and are pretty satisfied with the site.
Naturally this thread was started as a counter point to the many negative comments which have been posted for a while and to the one "STILL DEAD AT AMAZON" in particular.
Unfortunately the thread has drifted away from its original focus (see the first post), which was to examine practical and technical listing aspects and their impact on sales.
I suggest to close the thread at this time since it is not serving the purpose for which it was intended.
