"The cows were loaded onto trucks, then transported 100 miles north and freed in a forest clearing, where, as of press time, all 450 were standing around eating grass. "

As opposed to what? Standing around talking politics? Hitchhiking back to the farms?

Great story!

Did you know that cow flatulence produces methane gas in amounts sufficient to supply all of this country's automotive fuel forever? And that that same methane is the single largest cause of the erosion of the earth's ozone layer and thus the primary cause of the greenhouse effect?

krs - I certainly did. I have 6 cows in the basement as we speak. They "toot" into a holding tank and I end up with enough electricity to heat my house AND run the air conditioner.....at the same time, if I like.

But I believe it's the CFCs that are causing the breakdown of the ozone. They're broken down in the ozone layer by the UV to chlorine, which "eats" the ozone.

Sounds like an efficient setup. Are you able to adjust the temperature by varying the cow's diet? Different grasses? Apples?

how about "fragrant" grasses like lemongrass, etc.? why not just feed them potpourri?

Actually, in China (& IIRC, India) pigs are being used to generate methane for power in rural areas. Here's one link I know of:

http://www.lead.org.cn/Training/Materials/mid/concept.html

An excerpt:

4.2 Description of the cycle of livestock-methane gas-cultivation

The methane gas technology is quite simple, but plays a critical role in forming the cycle of livestock-methane-cultivation with the methane technology as the core. This cycle is known as a model of "ecological agriculture" in China, and has changed the pattern of production, consumption and life style of the local communities. Here is a brief description of this cycle.

Animal manure is a main raw material of methane production supplemented by crop and domestic wastes. For a family of 5 members, raising 2 pigs can generate enough raw materials for methane production. At the same time, farmers sell pigs to meat factories or in the market, which has brought in the income. In 1996, the pig sales in the market quadrupled the number in 1993, making a record of 507,000 heads.

Methane gas is produced in each individual household. The all-year-round warm and humid weather in Gongcheng gives ideal natural conditions for the methane production. The gas generated from the household methane pond is enough for a family to cook, power a small food processing motor and to light as supplement to electricity, which goes off occasionally in the villages.

The methane residuals and fluids are used as organic fertilizer and also for pest control to partly replace the chemicals used in the local fruit production. This is a main reason why fruits produced in Gongcheng selling well in the market and are often in short supplies.

Sniff, sniff.

An an animal lover, I was udderly mooooved by that article.

I swear I can hear those "proud and majestic" animals singing: "Oh, give me a home...."

What do you suppose happens to a cow without 2 hands or a machine to...say...lighten the load?

I'm thinking explosion.

krs - are you laughing at my cows? They have a perfect set-up downstairs. They have a big screen tv with their favorite "back to the land" movie on at all times ($12,000). They are fed daily ($100.00 per day, which includes their daily antibiotic injections), and the vet comes out twice a year to check on them ($1000.00). So you see, they are well taken care of.

But you seemed to have missed the point completely! I get my electricity for FREE!!..........(brother!)

krs & enchanted -

helen - yes, they should legalize the strongest pain killer (heroin?) for terminal patients and anyone going in for an initial consultation for any dental procedure.

At the very least, wine should've been served. What a bunch of cheap-o's!!!!!!!

Oh, and just so I don't get too off topic....
