I thought you might chime in when the talk turned to horses eventer!

I do have six hay burners and won't argue with what you said. Mine happen to be non-babied "pasture ponies" though so we go lots cheaper. No shoes, pasture and not hay (Yikes it's high around here!), and we're ranch hands so the barn, hay, pasture, etc. is supplied.

I'd love to show someday but I think I'll have to breed my prospect instead of buy. My older gal does 4-H quite well and is bred well enough to have nice babies.

Someday.....

Wow..how do yours get away with being "non-babied"? My LLO's (Living Lawn Ornaments) live better than I do! Nobody comes running out in a microburst to drag ME inside!

I don't even want to THINK about what I just charged for new fly sheets, fly sprays, supplements not to mention hay. It's high here too..the situation in Kentucky is making hay prices skyrocket.

My best advice...DON'T GET INTO SHOWING unless you really enjoy living at the poverty level while your horses are living at Bill Gates' level.

I just bought my daughter a prelim level horse & rated jumper and the price of horse was only the beginning. New bridles, pads, galloping boots, a zillion blankets for every occasion. It wouldn't be so bad if she didn't show in eventing AND show jumping, so we have 3 of everything...one set for cross country, one for dressage & one for show jumping.

But, what the heck..it's only money & I sure can't take it with me. Which is real good, because she's going to make sure there's nothing left to take anyway.

My babies are just simple ranch horses. They are well taken care of and babied by ranch standards. My hubby thinks I'm nuts because I'm planning on putting my older gal on joint supplements and I'm stocking my first aid kit. Out here if they can't handle the work/weather/etc. then they go down the road.

I'm hoping to do some small open shows this summer with the old gal and take my youngster (half-arab) along for the experience. If I ever get into showing seriously it will most likely be ranch-horse type competitions. As much as I love Dressage and would kill to learn to jump there is nobody around here to take lessons from. Endurance is a possibility with the half-arab colt though.

Ah wishful thinking....

We have a 1989 Toyota Camry. It has run very well since we bought it new - and it has well over 100,000 miles on it. Consumer Reports consistently rates Camry highly.

I also have a 1984 Dodge Caravan. Bought it used for about $6000. Love it to death. Go to all the garage sales, buy everything - and get it all home! (Gotta take out the middle seat first to ensure extra room for the big purchases!)

Before the Caravan I drove a 1985 Dodge Ram Van that had been customized. It was the mini style. We painted it Smurf blue so it became the talk of the town. Since I owned the local video store and had such a visible vehicle, I will forever be connected with it. Well, I traded it in the next town over. It was purchased by a person who happened to spend a couple of days hanging out on my side of town, parking in front of the local ice cream store. Funny how many cars beeped at the van when they passed - and I wonder what their thoughts were when they saw the driver .... He thought he had instantly become very popular.

I still see that little van running around here every now and then - and my girls are sooo excited to see it - they consider it an old friend.
