I've been mulling around different ideas to get pageviews in my listings, at all the alternative auction sites where they're listed.

I've tried simply listing them without success. Tried lowering the opening bids to reflect that there's no fees to list. That hasn't worked either.

So this is the plan I may implement.

Create a cartoon character, named DimviewDummy.

Hide DimviewDummy among my listings at the auctions sites where they are listed.

Should a viewer click on one of my auctions and find DimviewDummy he need only click on the image that would send me an e-mail message noting his find, for which he/she would be rewarded with a DimviewDummyDollar.

Create a catalog of items, perhaps on a website, where viewers could "buy" items with their DimviewDummyDollars.

So what do you think of my gimmick ... err, I mean, plan ... ? Do you think viewers will be rushing off to all these alternative auction sites trying to find DimviewDummy in order to earn some DimviewDummyDollars?

Maybe you could let me know what you think.

Thanks and have a great weekend.

edited to add that any similarities between DimviewDummy and DimviewDummyDollars with other programs at other auction sites is coincidental.

Sounds like a real winner to me!

People can spend hours just clicking your auctions searching for the dummy and when they find him, you can take your time sending them their money or is it a credit?

Or you can block them from bidding (another alternative for suspension)

Post it again? Ya gotta be kidding! I'm doing well to remember I posted something, let alone what it said!

Seriously, if AW moderators felt it should not be here, then I'm not going to repeat it.

This thread is funny though

I am getting so frustrated with this online auction stuff. I, as many have, started out on Yahoo. by the end, just before listing fees, I was selling like crazy! So now I have alot of things listed on Bidville, nothing featured or in their gallery and on Epier. Again, no features or anything else. I closed a few auctions on both sites. 1/2 were non payers. For the last 3 weeks nothing!! Nothing is closing with a winning bid!!! I even tried listing 4 things on Yahoo for a week. Gee, I hated to do that. I featured all 4 of them. Still nothing. Is the economy so bad that the buyers are just not buying in auctions anymore??? Or could it be that the online auction craze has slowed down to a halt! I dont get it!

Maybe I need to use some of that fancy auction listing software to make my auctions looks super professional or try to learn HTML. or maybe it's all a waste of time!

I am even thinking of paying the money to be one of those primier members on Bidville, maybe the exposure will help. If it doesnt, I will be MORE in the red.

Sorry, I just had to unburden my tired shoulders with my frustrations.

thanks for listening!

Do you think I need a commercial artist to come up with my DimviewDummy cartoon character?

Hi dimview,

I think you need to ask anyone that views your auctions to spam every message center they can find to bring them to your offerings.

Offer a $500.00 first prize to the viewer who spams the most boards on your behalf. Of course, they would need to somehow post a link to all the sites they mentioned you.

That oughta garner you a great reputation!

I don't know if that would really be a good idea.

As a reputable seller I want my auctions to reflect that, and by having folks SPAM on all kinds of chatboards on my behalf is sure to tarnish that image.

Even worse, when some of those SPAMMED trace the SPAM back to the source and learn that my "business plan" calls for running SPAM CONTESTS rather than the real work of developing an online auction presence that's responsible in every respect.

I certainly don't think that being a SPAMMER is going help my efforts.

edited to make the words SPAM, SPAMMED, SPAMMER and the phrase SPAM CONTESTS bold. Looks funnier.

{sarcasm mode on} Gee, I never thought of that! I didn't think there was anything wrong with posting on every chat board known to mankind. I thought any publicity was good publicity.{sarcasm mode off} bwahahaha

dimview,

I hope you aren't in California, cause my suggestion to get the word out, just may get you in trouble!

"Spamming to or from California e-mail service providers against their policy is now a civil offense under California Business and Professions Code Section 17538.45. If you run a California-based e-mail service provider, you need to notify your customers of the law and your anti-spam policy in order to be eligible to collect damages of $50 per message. You should also put a notice similar to the following onto your web pages:

The sending of any unsolicited email advertising messages to this domain will result in the imposition of civil liability against you in accordance with Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code Section 17538.45."

I wonder if you (general you) subscribe to a message board and spam is placed on that board and received in email(like here) would that rule apply?

I hope you didn't buy a mailing list to get the word out either. I hear 4 million users can be instantly registered and bidding on your item that way. Just hope none of them are in California either. Those $1 names could end up costing an additional $50 each. Sounds like pretty expensive advertising to me.

Nah, just cruise the 'net looking for a package of Twinkies and use their logo! Isn't that legal? I mean it's not like you're stealing or anything. You can color it a different color and made it bigger or smaller.

And we wouldn't want you to be fined $50 for each email you send out. Of course, if you got your auction viewers to send them for a fee, someone beneath your caliber may possibly think that it's okay - ya know, much like the *wink *wink not stealing thing?

Hmmmmm, maybe we could work a deal here. Can you pay us to come to your office to consult?

If mtnmama's suggestion of the twinkie doesn't work, you could always choose one of the characters from Green Eggs and SPAM. Lots of kiddies and parents of toddlers could relate to that book. Gosh you could even offer up some SPAM recipes for DimviewDummyDollars. Your idea ROCKS!

Well, you could create a kind of "treasure hunt" and place a clue to the treasure in each of your ads. To complete the puzzle, the customer would have to read each of your ads. Solving the puzzle would entitle the customer to a small discount or bonus prize w/purchase.

I place links to free software programs in some of my ads. It's a good incentive and I think it increases page views. Costs me nothing.

Oh Oh I know! You could offer some kind of reward to the person who discusses your auctions and dimviewDummy!

That way you'll have at least one stool pigeon that you can really trust.

And could you please allow us to have at least 5 user ID's to bid with? It's not shilling, it's just to promote DimviewDummyDollars, right?

DimviewDummy ROCKS!

EXCELLENT IDEA!!! i wouldn't "steal" someone else's character though...too many cases of internet copyright infringement these days!!

got a kid in the family?? have them design the character for you!! i'm sure they would be thrilled to have their design on the internet for all to see!!

let me know when you get this up and running cause i'll come running to find it!! FREE money is my favorite thing!!!!!

KEWL!

I have it now!

<"mtnmama><!

It sure is hard making that funny looking symbol. I think it must take years of practice in college.

Dimview,

A very serious question please. Will your auctions have a religious theme? I think it would benefit you to have one. I also think that when a high bidder leaves feedback, they should be able to quote a scripture and give their viewpoint of it.

<"mtnmama><!

Oh Oh I almost forgot the most important thing.

DV You are the best! You do so much for us every time I look!

ROFL hgtvjunkie aka you know who!

Actually this idea will never bring serious bidders. It will bring serious prize hungry lookers, but no bids. Been there, done that kind of thing.

But we love Dimview because he's the best.

Dimview Rocks!

DimviewDummy Rocks!

hehe mtnmama I'm so glad you understand what I am talking about. All the people that speak bad of Dimview are Evil and are NOT saved I would pray for them but I don't pray for my enemies...it would take too much patients for that. Do you have enough patients?! hehe

hgtvjunkie...I could have been a Doctor...
but I didn't have the patients...

dimview...I like twinsoft's approach with a mystery or puzzle that requires viewing all the listings. BTW, the character's name could be DimWit...j/k...but the idea of a gimmick is a good one!

Also, due to various laws, there'll be no:
Spam-spam-sPam-spaM, SPAM-SPAM-SPAM!
