mtnmama: Terrance Ave. was one of the BIGGEST BADDEST drug sellin/buyin' blocks in the hood. Back then (20+ years) the trade was controlled by individuals, but I'll be there are gangs involved now....
Stusi, sounds like you got out in the nick of time!!!....Modell's still exists, mainly a sports store with some sports clothing...Catchy jingle tho' "Gotta go to Mo's!"
Mays & Robert Hall were my mom's favorite stores!!!...I always got my new spring coat at Robert Hall, even got my pee coat there!!..Remember the kiosk behind May's - pretzels & ices - IF you were good in the store!!!...My husband lived in East Meadow & his mother would clean up after dinner and go to Mays EVERY night.
Ohrbachs was wonderful...I wept the day that Alexander's closed......Fortunoffs, still going strong!!!
Bonus points to anyone who remembers what "E.J. Kovettes" stood for.....

EJ Korvettes stood for the PT-like boats in WWII? Remember, the Big one?
In the 1940's, Terrace Ave in Hempstead was a calm apartment complex. One of my aunts lived there. NOT NO MORE!
Actually, our life in the early 1950's was a move into Suffolk Cty with the potato and flower fields. What I wish we had the foresight to buy into the Hamptons then!! We could retire on those real estate properties by the 1980's!
Now we have SW airlines flying over our heads into ISP,similar to 5 Towns having JFK flights over their heads! But the house prices! Oh! The house prices! Two doors down, they just sold for $336K and they bought that house 16 years ago for $60K. Taxes run about $5K-$13K and UP~ You hear that, middle America? Our school taxes are horrendous with many 20-30 yr. teachers earning close to $100K a year. After all, their salaries for many years was below poverty levels! But considering my daughter started teaching at $17K/yr........Ah, but how glorious to live in Spring and summer on Long Island?

Rancher, that's the Terrace Ave I remember. That's why we never went, weren't allowed to hob-nob with that element
I remember Fortunoff's for wedding gifts! That was just about the nicest store around. Of course, Macy's and Lord and Taylor on 5th Avenue were even better, but you had to travel to get there.
Remember Robert Hall's theme song? Robert Hall's the reason to bring you the season, low overhead - low overhead. I think that's the way it went. Of course, it's been years so it may be off by a few words.
We used to have this guy (called himself a peddler) come to the house with new clothes every month. He really bilked my folks - having to clothe 4 daughters - but Mom claimed he saved her from going to the store. He eventually passed away from a heart attack. I have no idea what his wife did with all his inventory. He sold everything door-to-door from sneakers to wedding gowns! This was back in the early to mid 50's.

For all those from Suffolk County,
Islip Speedway, Bay Shore Farmer's Market, Grucci Fireworks, Bald Hill SkiBowl (remember when you could ski on LI?), Parr Meadows Racetrack and Argyle Park

glassperson....I always thought it was Eleven Japanese Korean Veteran's...But I did visit Terrace Ave back in the ole' days, and well, have more than my fair share of fried brain cells! LOL!!!....The house prices are NUTS!!!...I'm in Suffolk, on the North Shore (remember the south shore vs north shore rivalries?) and paid $150 for my house 10 years ago. Recent sales in the neighborhood are in the high 2's / low 3's, taxes range from 5k to 20k. I keep tellin' my kids if we didn't live here, we couldn't afford to move here!!!....I wouldn't give ya two cents for summer on LI TODAY, gees, ya think it was hot enough????
Mtnmama...I did "visit" Terrace Ave a few times, I blame it on stupid youth (the same stupidity that made me - a very blonde chick - drive straight thru Wiandanch in a convertable at night alone!)..Fortunoff's was THE place to get a wedding gift, still is!!!...Wow, I don't remember clothing peddlers, do remember the milk man & the knife sharpening guy tho'...
toollady....YEAH Grucci!!!!....we got to Bald Hill when it was already an ampehatheather (sp?)....How about Riverhead Raceway, hanging out in Northport, Sunken Meadow, camping at Wildwood
Any other LIer's out there???....Step up and introduce yourselves!!!

rancher, We never even knew the place existed where it did until the explosion. We originally were supposed to live around the corner, but then moved in to another home that was ready sooner. Good thing. The house we were supposed to move into got knocked off it's foundation. We were 8 miles away and our windows rattled from the sonic boom of the explosion.
I went to school with one of the sons.
I lived not too far from Bald Hill.
There was also the Commack Arena, USA roller rink in Centereach (all night skates on Fridays) and Adventureland. My dad used to work around the corner from Adventureland and the parking lot went right into the back of the ride area.
And what about the Ground Round?
And speaking of the North Shore, Does Dennis Hickey still have his gold garbage cans at the entrance to his estate and the shamrock painted on the boulder on the beach behind his house?

Toollady....Yeah, I remember the explosion!!...Good thing you lucked out into the other house!!!....Remember the "seven sisters"????
We used to ice skate at the Commack Arena, watch Ducks games (hockey, well more like boxing on skates!)....I roller skated at Northport Roller rink religiously...Never did Centereach, where was it???...(somewhere on North Country road I'm guessin')....
Ground Round is still around, well in Port Jeff anyway..you dont get to throw popcorn on the ground and more & the prices are nuts!!....They still have a waiting line outside the door on weekend nights, tho'....
I totally forgot about Mr.Hickey and his garbage cans!!....If memory serves (and remember I DID visit Terrace ave in my youth!) he was busted for some carting problem, lost the house, and the powers that be trashed the cans and painted over the rock!!...

USA was on the corner of Nicholls Road and Middle Country Rd(rte 25). Then there was also a skating place on Sunrise Hwy in Holbrook/Sayville called 2002. It's a flea market now.(Holbrook is on the north side of Sunrise and Sayville is on the South).
Wow, Dennis lost the house??? I remember there were some problems with the carting business(purported organized crime), but I thought the house was in his wife's name. I remember when those garbage cans went up. The upper crust had apoplexy!
Oh yeah, Seven Sisters! We took the kidlet on it Memorial Day weekend. It's not the same when you're in a Cadillac! Definitely need a Camaro or Mustang to do the Seven Sisters right!

USA must have been what was Sand's Salvage when we moved out here from Huntington (originally from Mineola & East Meadow)...It's a storage place now....Must have been a great rink, it's huge!!!....Attis Flea right?...They actually DO have a skating rink there now, looks like pretty small place tho'....
Yeah, those cans really caused a major stir!....I thought it was a hoot tho', I can imagine pissin' off my neighbors like that!
We garage sale in the sister's area occasionally...A wee bit frightening in a huge conversion van!!....Can't see a darn thing as your going over the hills...I had a friend who was terrified of hills, we used to take her there and then fake the "oh, the brakes went out" stunt!....We were young and well, kinda foolish!!!
I think I visited the Park Bench once or twice. My bar time was spend in US Blues in Roslyn.

Yup! That's where USA was. It was USA and then became Sand's Salvage. Pieces of the rink were still there under the "inventory"! Then a few years ago, it was a roller rink again. Across the street was Dragon Island restaurant. Great place to eat!
I remember they closed for renovations and the next thing you know, the building was bulldozed. Some renovation project!
There was also Sundance in Bay Shore, Tuey's in Setauket and Rum Runner's in Oyster Bay.
There was a HUGE place in Huntington (I think) That was on Jericho Tpke just off 110. For the life of me I can't remember the name. All I know is, there was always a line down the street.
And who could forget the Great White Dope - Jerry Cooney!
