"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A flight attendant who claims she had a yearlong affair with U.S. Rep. Gary Condit said she was urged by the California Democrat to sign what she called a false affidavit swearing there was nothing between them, according to a news report."

Don't even get me started on people who use their "careers/jobs" (such as Smith) to meet so-called influential people for "fun and games" or a chance at the "lifestyle of the rich and famous" and then later yell "foul" (or have their attornies do it), give exclusive interviews to "tabloids" or write books and make movie deals after the "public" has been stirred into a "feeding" frenzy!!!! All the better for the book/movie deals ya know?????
However, I hope the young intern is found and found alive. I just hate to see a possible tragedy turned into a 3 ring circus before any facts are known!
This is difinetly an example of when the media should back off and wait quitely (listening/watching/gathering facts) in the wings, letting the authorities do their jobs, before turning it into a "free-for-all"!

Women have been using their feminine charms to get what they want from men (power, money, and title) since before the time of Caesar....only the venue has changed.
Despite conventional wisdom, most men have a fully formed brain and are capable of saying "no" or, if their other brain is running the show that day, to accept the consequences of their actions like the adults they are...
A woman can never have a romantic/sexual affair with a man without his consent....to do otherwise would be rape, wouldn't it??
I submit, in this instance, as in most, both parties knew exactly what they were doing and did so willingly...
Additionally, I didn't hear these women (Smith and Zamsky) telling their stories to the media until Condits camp started up the denial machine. The accounts merely confirm a hypothesis maintained by Levy's parents all along...
I do hope, in all the hype and name-calling, that the value of Chandra's life isn't diminished.......I hope finding her is Job #1 on everyone's list...

Before we convict and have Congressman Condit hung, maybe we should wait for some concrete facts. As, for the statements made by the the Aunt and the flight attendent, how much would the tabloids have paid them to hear them say "Congressman Who?" As for the reports by the "Real News" (term used loosely), they are only reporting that the tabloids are reporting the unfounded, unsubstantiated and wild rumors and statements, trying to pass it off as news (by neglecting to mention unfounded, unsunstantiated and wild). Now I am no fan of the affairs and after-hours goings-on of our elected representatives, but dammit, a woman is missing and all the media can focus on is what could turn out to be a colossal lie and a man's life will have been ruined and a woman, who might have been saved, will be dead.

He doesn't do very well by mysteriously cancelling all of his engagements as he did on the 4th. That just fuels the suspicion. Even if he is trying to avoid the details of the affair, he still has to realize that this is a missing person investigation, and he needs to be candid with the investigators. What I can't figure out is why anybody cares. She's just an intern. No more special than all of the other thousands of missing and probably more recoverably children in this world. She isn't even a child. If her body shows up - conduct the homicide investigation, otherwise, she was a grown woman, no law says she couldn't leave her internship become a bag lady down in Miami.

Prediction:
Condit and Levy were/are friends just like Clinton and Lewinsky were.
Their alleged affair is only material to the missing person's investigation in that Condit is denying it, which is in contradiction to statements from Levy's family.
If Condit is lying about their relationship, what else could he be lying about....?
In politics, creating the truth is a way of life and they're experts at it....
It is also a feature of those who crave the power and fame, both in private and public life.
As an aside, I'm somewhat dismayed that our resident Bush bashers haven't made a connection yet, as Condit is a long-time local liberal politician (although a local Republican cattle rancher just held a fund-raiser for Condit at his restaraunt on the West Side).

I saw a report on CBS news (yesterday morning), where only the correspondent was present, standing on the street somewhere in DC (I presume).
He stated Condit had "stated" he didn't want to get involved in a "cirus" which he felt could hinder the official investigation. Then, that same correspondent went on to state he had "talked" to the aunt (no aunt present on camera) and she had told him that Levy had told her that she and Condit had talked of marriage and children! (paraphrasing used here)
That's a lot of heresay isn't it????
I was disappointed that a major network could jump on the bandwagon so quickly using the same tatics at the "tabloids"....ie: she said, he said, they said....
I suppose nobody in media wants to get "scooped" or have their news considered "old" news by the time it hits the press or network, but it galls me all the same!
Ditto that....in the account below from CNN, it mentions Chandra's aunt pleading the same request...
<Quote>
"We believe that Rep. Condit's lack of candor is hindering efforts to find Chandra," her aunt, Linda Zamsky, said in a 16-page statement distributed to the news media.
"We call on him to do what he would want others to do if one of his children were missing -- give a complete account of his relationship with Chandra, what he knows about her whereabouts on the days leading up to her disappearance and any information he may have that can help investigators,"

Yes, the Aunt said Chandra told her there was an affair. The whole story by her will go to the highest bidder. Same with the Flighty Attendant, she says Conduit sent her a form to sign(which she can't produce), her story will go to the highest bidder. Many say his lack of candor is hindering the investigation. My mistake, I always thought candor had something to do with the truth, not the lurid and salacious story we want to hear. He says they were friends and they did not have an affair. No real and concrete facts have come out to the contrary. It is just not what the media wants to hear, therefore it is a lie.

camachinist,
Condit is a conservative Democrat who has often voted with republicans on some conservative issues. Because of that he may be a more unlikely target for the ongoing republican sleaze.
On the other hand, the bush machine might think that he is an easy mark because he wouldn't be able to rally full support by Democrats when under attack, and a seat in the house is a seat in the house. If the republican campaign committee feels that there is a strong republican contender for Condit's seat they might work to discredit him before the 2002 elections.
The who's who of local conservatives showed up at Harris Ranch the other day for the fund-raiser so I surmise he's rallying support from all quarters....

LOL! What goes around comes around!
I would only hope that negative media would go around to ALL of the politicians who did a "shame on you!" to Clinton -- especially when they were just as guilty! Goes to show that you don't have to be a Republican politician to be two-faced, doesn't it?
As far as paranoid theories goes about Bush and the GOP, I'm sure that they figured out that since they were taking such a disastrously big hit from their ultra-conservative agenda against America and Americans, they must be going round to dig as deeply as possible to pull out anything of negative value from the democrats. Notice the demo that was a police chief and is only now, after 20 some odd years, suddenly looking like he might be facing murder charges? Before that, there was the ex-racist who is still a bit un-pc in his words. Now there's a NEW Democratic Horror -- the disappearance of Chandra Leavy! You can expect this sort of digging dirt to go on and non and on until the Republicans take back both the House and the Senate. After all, didn't Sen. Trent Lott call for all-out warfare against the Democrats? Here you go!
I'm not saying that these Demos whose past and now present are being brought to the media's attention are great people! Au Contraire! However, I was wondering in what form Trent Lott's War would take and as usual, it's to smear their opponents. And what better ammunition than SUSPICION? It worked well on Clinton, it's going to work well on these other folks. I guess that if you intend on going into politics, you had better be a Saint! (ever seen the movie, Being There with Peter Sellers?)

Give us a break. You think this is some Republican trick? The story was perfect for the media, missing girl, congressman, sex, mystery... they make fiction on plots like this.
If Condit had come clean at the beginning the story might be history by now. Instead for some strange reason you seem to think that Trent Lott is responsible for Condit problems. I'll repeat myself, "Give us a break."

Look, I know that voting for Bush requires a decided lack of IQ, a lack of personal judgement, an inability to comprehend simple matters that makes one wonder how they've lived this long. But to ignore the very words, "As far as paranoid theories goes about Bush and the GOP ..." and then posting your crude expostulation only serves to reinforce everyone's impression about your level of ignorance. If you don't like paranoid theories, then don't read them.

Condit's only demonstrable error is his mistaken belief that by refusing to feed a media frenzy one could be avoided. He should have known that republican scandalmakers would not allow that when the involved person is a democrat.
To ask to be given a break in the same breath which says 'if Condit had "come clean" (with the unspoken but obvious assumption that he is "dirty" ) is a low position to take, typical of the innocent saintliness pretended to by republican supporters. It discounts immediately any possibility that Condit may have attempted to remain silent in order to protect the reputation of Levy or the feelings of her family and those of his own family.
That he may have acted in a dignified manner in order to perhaps lessen the perceived impact on the integrity of his party is certainly beyond the ability of any republican to accept. Because republicans have none of that as a party itself how could it allow for the possibility of another party having any at all? To do that would make lie of their presentation of fair play on an even field.

So now Condit has admitted that his relationship with Levy was more than "just friends" after denying it for months to the media and investigators. I wonder how much credibility he has over the claims of the flight attendant last week?
Rep. Gary Condit issued a statement on Tuesday saying he had never "asked anyone to refrain from discussing" the disappearance of intern Chandra Levy, nor had he "suggested that anyone mislead authorities." The California Democrat's comments were in response to a flight attendant's claim that she had a yearlong affair with Condit and that he had told her she was not required to cooperate with investigators in the Levy case.
If Condit was a ship and I was a passenger I'd be checking out the lifeboat stations.
Flight attendant Anne Marie Smith, 39, told Fox News that Condit urged her to sign what she called a false affidavit swearing there was nothing between them. Smith said that she came forward because "I was concerned about my safety."
As the stories trickle in can anyone really be surprised that the media is on a feeding frenzy now?

Sure, vague statements, unproduced documents; all the fodder of republican rumor mongers, and possibly the product of them as well. How many more will come forward? Who can tell? Perhaps as many as the RCC will pay for, at least as many as they feel they need.
The statement of a US congressman can hardly stand against the counterstatement of a possibly paid and probably ditzy flight attendant who's own morals might be questioned but of course are not.
How very typical. As if the RP can ever cover the activities of their own homegrown sleazebag, Richard Nixon, who has burdened them with the knowledge that they may well fall before the presentation of provable fact. No. They now, as then, fabricate fact and lurk about hoping not to be caught like prankster children stealing cooling pies from grandma's windowshelf in the fall.

Crayfish, aka crawfish, aka mudbugs are what I consider the ultimate freshwater bait. The problem is no freshwater fish will taste as good as the bait. A big pile of spicy, fresh boiled, crawfish has few equals on the tasty meter.
