Having winning bid on yahoo sent money order, several days and several e-mails later received substandard goods that were not what I bid on..checked auction site and SEVERAL bidders had sent payment and received nothing..tried to contact seller-e-mail address not longer exists..one of the other bidders found a phone no. but no one answers--what are my options now..this was in excess of 800.00 on just my part and there are several more that have lost just as much. seffers50

Perhaps it is time to contact the police.

Just curious, did you pay to a P.O. Box or real address?
Several steps ripped off buyers can take:
USPS Mail Fraud complaint (get form from your local p.o. or visit website:
http://www.new/usps.com
http://Fraud.org
http://Web-police.org
http://www.alexanderlaw.com/nccc/cb-ftc.html
Contact the State Attorney General office of his state AND yours (Use a search engine to find add/phone/fax info for any Atty Gen office)
If it was a business you can file a claim with the FTC & BBB
It can take up to 3 months to hear back from any of these organizations so you have to be patient. Good Luck![br]

face it you lost your money because auction houses don't perform up to their responsibilities to check credentials and demand collatarial against a credit card the way they do their own fees.

Perhaps you may want to check into the seller's feedback file prior to placing a bid.

seffers50 - How about letting us know the sellers name so the same thing doesn't happen to us. I wish you the best of luck.

Sorry to hear that happened. That is one of my fears also. "kasmoon" has some good ideas. Please let us know what yahoo does about this. I think the auction houses should get sellers names and addresses and a credit card number. I've also heard that some sellers sell many low priced items get a good rating and then go in for the kill. I would never send a seller alot of money. Next time (if) you do this you may want to ask the seller about putting the money in escrow until you recieve you items and are happy with them.
Good luck!!

I sell on Yahoo Auction, and I know they don't require registering a credit card before you can submit listings, nor do they verify names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of registered users. From the number of deadbeat bidders, I'd guess that there are teenagers who register under a false identity, getting their kicks placing bogus bids.
The crooks are out there and it's hard to tell them from the honest dealers. You should always check the feedback of a seller before bidding, and NEVER EVER send anyone a large amount of money directly. If possible, charge it on your credit card (the issuer of which will allow you to dispute the charge), use i-Escrow (which will withhold your payment from the seller until you approve the merchandise), or have it sent COD. Any reputable dealer will not object as long as YOU foot the bill for the extra services.
I quit buying on Ebay because so many of my purchases were not as described (some out of the seller's ignorance or carelessness, and some out of deception and fraud). In fact, I just sent software I purchased last summer on Ebay to the law authorities who prosecuted the seller (they told me it was pirated).
Good luck--I hope you can return the goods and get your money back.

I sell on both Yahoo and Ebay... because of ebays strict rules (registering credit card info, personal info etc) and the fact THEY charge fees, they actually do help people out in these situations.. and purchases are insured with them if its over 80.00. They even have mediators and they will also let you know how you can take sellers/bidders to court. Yahoo is a different story.. they let anyone buy or sell. they dont charge a fee and they NEVER get involved in ANYTHING. I sent letters telling them that someone was claiming they had a device to perform abortions! and they never took the auction out or reprimanded the seller. I was appalled. The only thing you can do is file mail fraud charges as stated by someone else in the post. The other thing is to always pay by credit card (through paypal since they dont and wont give out your credit card number to the seller).. that way you can always dispute the charges and have it credited back to you. Hope this helps someone in the future..

Ours4you, Yahoo does require a CC in order to sell BUT they won't give out the name/add info. My friend got ripped off and asked for the sellers real name/add registered with to file fraud claims. Yahoo response--"We will NEVER give out user info unless presented with a court order due to our privacy policy. Yahoo does not get involved in buyer/seller disputes."
Within a month this seller compiled 12 negs in a row all stating he took their money (totals from $28-$400 each) and never sent anything. Yahoo does not offer insurance or help on any deals, they have a strict policy of 'you're on your own'.
This was not an eBay deal but from what I recall their insurance only covers $175.00 total. ($200 max but first $25 is the deductible). Claims less than $25 need not bother filing.
