Search seems to have issues. Did a search for "X-files clock" which I knew existed. Nothing found. Same results for "Mulder Clock" and "Scully Clock". However, if you searck for "clock" or even "wall clock" you will find the item amongst the many other clocks.

Just tested and a search for "x-files" also returns no items and I know that there are several X-Files items up for bid. How are people supposed to bid on stuff if they can't find it? Oh, and I was using both regular and advanced search for this test. And none of the items are new listings.

Tanya:

Sorry I missed your post yesterday but I was directed at another issue and just didn't make it by the boards.

Anyway, you are making some valid criticisms for search. Frankly I know that we've been making some subtle changes with search to help speed the function.

Methinks that someone went too far.

For instance, all the words in the Mulder Scully ad are indexed in search. The problem is that the hypen in X-Files is trashing the search.

I think we may have gone too far because I also noted that the string "batteries Not Included" comes back with a "no object" error. Huh? ... yes, not is a being interpreted as a boolean search word in this context.

Also, we used to return items on search with the string of words being in no particular order. If a description said "Baby blue sports car" if someone searched for "car blue sports" a match would be made.

Let me get the report through to the folks who can make it better.

Pat

Well that is interesting and a bit frustrating. So after playing with it a bit, I find that typing in Mulder finds some items. Scully finds a few items. X-Files turns up no items. Mulder clock, nothing; Mulder AND clock brings up the one item.

So the search engine is working the opposite of every other search i have encountered. There is no implied AND between search terms. It assumes that the search terms are a phrase. That isn't good. Oh and by the way, the search results come up with the window title of "Auction Universe Search Results"......AU lives on in spirit

Well, give the engineers a kick in the heiny and ask them to get this worked out quickly please. I am sure there would be more bids and thus happier sellers if people could get accurate search results.

Tanya

BTW, if i may ask, what exactly is your job? Obviously you do more than just hang out on the message boards....

Tanya:

Strangely enough I'm probably not only auctions.com's number one cheerleader publicly, but also its most vocal critic internally. This often puts me in a strange position but hey, I'm a big boy.

Regaring AU appearing in the search ... I've done hundreds of searches and never noticed that. (For the benefit of the casual reader, Auctions.com's predecessor was AuctionUniverse.com. Second point is that the "auctionuniverse.com mention is at the very bottom of the search page along side the "site agreement" and other credits. It also appears only when getting "quick search" results. Oh well, another one for the techies.)

BTW: Tanya, that is what is called a "great catch." Thanks, I'll be passing that along.

Pat

Well, I do what I can. I think AC is a great site and I want to make it better.

So, think they would want to hire a #2 cheerleader? *grin*
