I just sole a pair of candlesticks for 37.00 or so. When I received a response from the customer via WBN return, I saw that he had to pay 2.20 for insurance. Insurance should've been 1.30. Why is there only one option for 2.20 for the first 100 (then 1.00 per hundred after) when it should be 1.30 for the first 50, .90 for the next 50, then 1.00 for each? Thanks.

Hi Bitsofhistory,
The insurance settings are meant to apply to different carriers insurance specifications. Unfortunately USPS insurance is less than what the settings are in Global PReferences so you would need to issue a credit to the customer if you like.

Which carriers are those? I just phoned FedEx and UPS and their rates were not 2.20 for the first 100.

It applies to any carrier someone might use that offers insurance. The number is a general number.

Statistically USPS carries more eBay merchandise than any other carrier for that reason alone the breakpoints should be at 50.01, 100.01 etc. It's not a big issue to me but it is a no brainer that insurance varies by carrier and should be based on the choice of carrier made by the consignee of the shipment.

bitsofhistory, I agree that the insurance breakdown should be different. The way I got around that is by including it in my shipping cost ( It would only work if you insure everything - which I do, and specify which carrier you use) I make it clear to the customer that it's included and preset my insurance to "not offered." It's a little restrictive for most, but it works for me and saves me the hasstle of refunds or customers complaining that I overcharged them.

AW has been aware for months that 1) 80 percent of items sold on eBay are shipped via USPS, and 2) that the average eBay sale is under $30. These stats are readily available from eBay reports and in the general financial press. This would logically suggest that the insurance feature should be set up to accommodate the USPS $50 insurance rate, but AW refuses to recognize that logic and instead continues to push the lame excuse of the "other carriers." Thus, 20 percent inconveniences 80 percent.
I too put my insurance in the shipping boxes and have turned off the worthless insurance feature.

Hi ya'll,
just to put my $1.30 worth of input to this post. I state in my auction that on breakable items insurance is mandatory and will be included in the final shipping price. But, on non breakable items insurance is optional. So I check one of the boxes at the bottom - put in an insurance amount (I usually have a fairly good idea whether or not an item will sell for over $50.00) and then type in "Optional Insurance". I also put in a disclaimer that I will not accept loss liability for uninsured items. I have had about a 70-30 response in favor of taking the insurance. Steve

I have just started ebaying again after a 7 month hiatus. I am pleased with most of the enhancements that AW has made in that time period, but I am very disappointed about this insurance deal. I don't believe that this was very well thought out. There really needs to be $50.00 and under amount. We really shouldn't have to work around this!

How do you get the Insurance to turn on. I tried in my gloabl settings, but when tried to send a WBN to myself, it was not there.

Go under Account and Global Preferences and then the drop down window for custom. Then choose USPS and it automatically changes for $50 and up, or you can change to whatever you want. This is the only place I've found to change insurance.

In addition, we also now offer the insurance calculator for UPS and FedEx, and we still have the custom rate available in case those nor USPS fits your preferred insurance calculator.

If UPS and Fedex can be calculated properly or precisely that is a further arguement for having the breakpoint conform to USPS standards since the "other carriers" have been accomodated and USPS is impossible to configure correctly the way it is. It is not feasable to have to refund a high percentage of my clients nor does it present a proffesional image.

I agree, it is not professional and makes the bidders, most of whom do not know the word default, feel we are ripping them off on insurance.

Hello Davebraun,
If you would take a look at Global Preferences, you will see that you can select USPS as who you offer your insurance from and that the breakdown has been corrected to what they offer ($1.30 for the first $50, etc). You can save it as your default.
